12 Releases I’m Looking Forward to in 2012

12 Releases I’m Looking Forward to in 2012 The month of January was named after the Roman goddess Janus who had two faces.  Like the goddess, January is the month of the year when we both look back on the previous year that is over as well as ahead to the year coming up. I just posted my favorite releases for 2011 - here is a list of releases that I'm looking forward to in 2012. The Right Now - sophomore release (April 21st) - The Chicago R&B group The Right Now has had a pretty great run since their [...]

(Review) Chicago Odense Ensemble

(Review) Chicago Odense Ensemble In the last year or so it seems that a few groups that I follow have chosen as a template for their recent albums the genre-defining and game-changing 1969 Miles Davis album In A Silent Way . In the Davis oeuvre, In A Silent Way represents his first full-step into electric fusion jazz and the precursor to Bitches Brew . The album itself is two compositions- on the LP, one per side- which are made up of edits of a much longer recording session by legendary recording engineer Teo Macero. In 2008  musicians gathered [...]

Colorlist – The Fastest Way To Become The Ocean

Colorlist – The Fastest Way To Become The Ocean The Fastest Way To Become The Ocean is the first in a four-part series of releases on the Serein label, each one based on a season of the year. This EP by Colorlist represents Spring, and it is safe to say they have nailed it. The four tracks are all composed by the two members of the group with a little outside help, Charles Rumback takes care of percussion and melodica while Charles Gorczynski plays the saxophone along with a multitude of other instruments. The music itself is loosely affiliated with modern jazz, but follows [...]

My First Show: Les Américains' Jeff Parker Butthole Surfers, Stone Temple Pilots and Firehose -- In A Water Park, Even.

Welcome to My First Show, where we give bands a chance to talk about the first shows they ever attended -- no matter how uncool and embarrassing those tales may be. Je... Andrew Bird brings a second dose of Gezelligheid to Chicago (12/15)

Andrew Bird brings a second dose of Gezelligheid to Chicago (12/15) Just 364 days ago , Andrew Bird set up shop at Chicago's 4th Presbyterian Church for what he called his Gezelligheid shows. That sneezy looking word apparently translates to coziness (or something like it) when taken out of the Dutch, so what better place than a big, quiet, tight-set church? I wouldn't exactly call the setting cozy; in fact, it's a cavernous place with a balcony. The attitude of Bird and his fanbase, however, definitely embodies that spirit. It helps that everyone is ramped up for the holidays, peppermint and kindness oozing out of everyone's pores. But [...]

Chicago Odense Ensemble featuring members of Tortoise release debut track The Chicago Odense Ensemble , a new project featuring danish jazz improvisers and memebers of Tortoise, are now streaming their debut track titled "Soup". The Chicago Odense Ensemble features Danish musicians Jonas Munk and Jakob Skøtt who visited Chicago in the winter of 2008, and, through mutual friends, were able to set up a studio session with Chicago's top improvisers including Tortoise 's Jeff Parker and Dan Bitney, cornetist and Chicago Underground collective leader Rob Mazurek , percussionist Brian Keigher and Chicago funk scene veteran Matt Lux. Members of Tortoise, Isotope 217 & Causa Sui to Release Chicago Odense Ensemble

Members of Tortoise, Isotope 217 & Causa Sui to Release Chicago Odense Ensemble AdLuna Records is a label I've been following for a little while due to their ties with Thrill Jockey artists. AdLuna is a boutique-ish label out of France which has a penchant for free jazz and funk (well, and one folk release). They released their first three releases in 2008. Due to the low volume of releases from the label, they are able to focus on the packaging of the releases. All three CD releases are in a unique 5.53 x 7.753 book style cover- printed on high-quality card stock with a matte finish. In the case [...]

Lit Randomness: Bill Simmons, Moby Dick, Padget Powell, Kirkus & more

Here's one you can dig into. Tackling Bill Simmons' behemoth: At NY Mag . W/ Sherman Alexie, Freedarko's Shoals, Sam Anderson & more. From these comments, I'm glad I didn't get this book for my dad. Simmons uses a lot of ahem, 'colorful' and 'explicit' metaphors apparently. Still waiting on my copy. Padget Powell Double: Ricky Moody on The Interrogative Mood at The Millions . Then Jeff Parker on The [...]

Friday Five: 5 Bests Things Jeff Parker Has Read Recently

Friday Five: 5 Bests Things Jeff Parker Has Read Recently Somehow I got a copy of Jeff Parker's Ovenman a few years ago and was smitten. Being a punk kid from Florida, it was awesome to read about a punk kid from Florida. Adding post-it notes and pizza made it even better. After that book, Parker compiled an anthology of Russian stories called Rasskazzy and now has a set of stories called The Taste of Penny from Dzanc Books in April. Here's the five best things Jeff Parker [...]

Tortoise Beacons of Ancestorship

Tortoise is one of those bands that has always floated just outside the realm of my musical fishbowl. I have seen their CDs in record stores for years now, I have read reviews of their music, seen their releases advertised, and yet I never dug in.

B-Sides in the Bins #30 - Chicago - 9/12/08

B-Sides in the Bins #30 - Chicago - 9/12/08 My wife and a friend of hers wanted to go to Chicago for a Gluten-Free Cooking Conference. This left her friend Sharon's husband Bob and I with lots of time on our hands. Bob Najouks is one of the Sunday morning jocks on Kirkwood College's Jazz and Blues station KCCK , so I thought a trip to the infamous Jazz Record Mart was in order. I hadn't been to JRM in over two years so it was time for me to come back and Bob had never been there! This weekend was wet. [...]
