Jethro Tull suffers if compared to the critically reviled acts of the progressive era, but in terms of their influence, longevity and versatility, they really are a unique entity in rock music. Whatever one's feelings about progressive rock, Jethro Tull's Aqualung is a rare album that remains at once part of, and above, the fray. It is, to be certain, a cornerstone of the then-nascent prog-rock canon, but it did -- and does -- exist wholly on its own terms as a great rock album, period. One of the many reasons prog-rock is controversial, and taken less-than-seriously by the [...]

Jethro Tull - Aqualung 40th Anniversary Edition In the pantheon of Rock'n Roll flautists, there exists no bigger name than Ian Anderson and his legendary band Jethro Tull . 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of Tull's fourth and best-selling album, Aqualung . Digitally remastered and expanded two CD commemorative Collector's Edition of the classic 1971 album, released to coincide with Aqualung 's 40th Anniversary. Disc One features a NEW, previously unreleased stereo mix of the album by [...]

It's the 40th anniversary of Jethro Tull 's seminal (pardon the pun) album, Aqualung, and EMI/Chrysalis has done a fine, fine job with the remastering and packaging. Now, I'm not gonna sit here and give you a review of the album...because you know it! It's a classic. 1971 was a turning point for Tull as they were fully sloughing off their earlier blues-rock simplicity (which was also brilliant) and were ever-progressing into new territory, creating their own unique sound. In effect, they were pioneering rock music like their other progressive rock contemporaries, Emerson, [...]

Way out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Iceland and Scotland, is a cluster of 18 small islands called the Faroe Islands. Thats where Gudrid Hansdóttir was born and raised. Her music is a Lilith Fair-worthy blend of chamber pop and perky folk-rock and the past years she´s been performing in Europe and USA. Gudrid started singing at an early age and shared a high interest in Music. She loved going through her fathers vinyl records and she discovered great artists like Kate Bush, Dolly Parton, Jethro Tull and Jimi Hendrix. Her father was a highly skilled guitar [...]

Don't know about where you live, but in these parts it's time to get back to school. Not me, of course (hahahaha) but my kids are getting ready to wake up early, do homework, etc. Well, wake up early anyway. When you're packing lunches you may want to throw in a tune or two. Not your granddaddy's Tull: a colonoscopic journey through the past with Ian Anderson and company.
On Blood Ceremony's second album, the Canadian band embraces a traditional style of doom metal; but they still manage to make worlds collide. With guitar riffs coming straight out of the Toni Iommi playbook and flute playing that calls out to Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, this album is like a rock nerd fantasy collaboration come true! Everything from the musicianship to the recording style on this album is pretty damn solid. I'm not 100% on the vocals, but it's a detail I can overlook when everything else I'm dealing with here [...]
By Davis McGraw In addition to unskilled labor, songwriting and looking for pre-1979 Fleetwood Mac records at yard sales, my human experience has been defined, for better or worse, by days and nights spent in cheap diners. This column is about all those times, tracks, faces, plates and places. While growing up in Vermont, a hallmark of the summertime was the after-dinner walk my family took once or twice a week. We'd leave with the sun still peeking over the treetops, casting long shadows on the warm pavement as we strolled down the hill from our quiet neighborhood cluster into [...]
As dawn breaks over Cheltenham racecourse for the final day of Wychwood Festival , the sun is nowhere to be seen. Despite earlier forecasts stating the weekend's weather would be warm, it is raining. Around the camp site wellies are being donned and waterproof ponchos unpacked, nothing is stopping the revellers enjoying the remaining hours of the weekend. Opening the BBC Introducing stage is someone who could easily be headlining the tent this evening, Tim Gilvin. The self-described "postfuturist experimentalist diamond in the rough of neoconsumerist aspirationalism", [...]

Songs from the Wood came out in 1977 and is the tenth studio album by Jethro Tull and is considered to be the first of a trio of folk rock albums (Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses and Stormwatch) despite the fact that folk music elements are present in the work of Jethro Tull both before and after this trilogy. These particular Tull albums all fit nicely together and should be listened to as such. The unofficial full title of the album is Jethro Tull with kitchen, prose and gutter [...]

It's been quite the struggle to post lately for me. I copied my digital music library from my computer to an external hard drive and the process took nearly a week! My computer is ancient so that might have something to do with it, but suffice to say there was a lot of music tripping through these wires this past week. It's just short of a terabyte now and I'm not really close to having everything from my library digitized. I'm looking forward to having several copies in safe places and buying a new machine that can handle all this [...]

I'm really late on this post as this was meant to be a buildup post to the Easter themed party 'Sound of Danger' held at the Carlton (24/04/2011), with the primary focus of 'resurrecting' the italo. These Sunday night events, titled ' Danger ', are hosted by George Hysteric (of System fame) and Roman Wafers (Bamboo Musik). I was kindly given three edits from the duo to support/promo the night. Even though I have truly missed the boat, they are still, however, quite relevant and shouldn't go unheard: MP3: Atmosphera - Easy Girl [...]

Documentary about the first 20 years of Jethro Tull. It was cut down to fit an hour slot on ITV's Night Time schedule. Also in this post, a 50 minutes long documentary called Jethro Tull - BBC Lively Arts from 1979. And if that's still not enough Tull for you, we just posted Jethro Tull - Slipstream (Full DVD) on our video site . 20 Years of Jethro Tull (1988) is a video by Jethro Tull, also known as Jethro Tull: This Is the First 20 Years. It consists of interviews with [...]

There's a growing number of 'smaller' festivals in the UK, some showcasing new bands you've never heard of and some playing host to the golden oldies. Wychwood Festival tries to find the middle ground between rock 'n' roll royalty and hotly tipped underground talent. Held at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, Wychwood Festival brings three days of entertainment across the 3-5 June weekend. Headlining the extravaganza are britpop extraordinaires the Charlatans (pictured above), the Scottish and Irish rockers the Waterboys and [...]
A great, and obscure prog classic from Finland circa 1972.
