Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Ivan Otis Vancouver songstress Jill Barber has never read a Harlequin romance novel, but her orchestral, sultry jazz-pop epitomizes that dreamy, idealistic view of love. It's almost certain a man has thrown on her music to get his date in the mood. On her latest album , 'Mischievous Moon,' most of the songs are about being totally open for love. "I like to [...]

* photographed by Chelsea Chernobyl Those that settled in their seats at The Vogue Theatre last night in Vancouver were unlike any I had seen gathered in one place in this city before. It was a heart warming mix of couples, mothers and daughters, grandparents and their grown up grandchildren. In an age where one can make a hit single using keyboards and sounds produced from a computer, the 50 years plus crowd at the Jill Barber performance seemed to indicate her choice to remain classic. As her band commenced the opener, the title track from [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases Ivan Otis Jill Barber would not be out of place on a bill with Diana Krall or any number of jazz artists. Yet this sultry singer, whose music conjures up a bygone era of long gowns, elegant ballrooms and Clark Gable romance, is embraced by the indie rock world. Her last album, 'Chances,' was long-listed for Canada's coveted Polaris Music Prize , [...]

The first night of Kelp 17 happened on May 5th at the Kichesippi Brewery . It was very unique to hold it at a Brewery plant. Despite having trouble finding beforehand. (Thanks for Google Maps being handy) When I heard the sound check of Jim and the Mash Potato Mashers, I was like this is going to blow my ears away! It was very unique to have it at a Brewery plants. Wasn't sure if 100 [...]

Canadian Sweetheart Jill Barber is a fresh voice who just got herself signed after a gallivant of coffeehouse gigs. Barber certainly is fresh, her voice marinated in romance and sexy confidence. She is smooth, sultry but kind and the combination gives the effect of a warm sweater in autumn. Barber is probably best listened to on night's end on the couch accompanied by red wine and a sweetheart, in the bathtub or during baking. She admittedly likes her romance and follows her heart, this is ever-evident in her songs and runs the risk of being heavy on the [...]

Whatever sleek and slinky chanteuse qualities Canadian singer/songwriter Jill Barber might have been harboring over the course of her acclaimed musical output so far have been brought to center stage with the release of her album Mischievous Moon a couple of weeks ago ( CD Canada only, available stateside digitally). After three fine folk/pop albums that flirted now and then with jazz and retro adult pop , Barber makes her Moon a heavenly slice of [...]

When it comes to describing Jill Barber , words like timeless , elegant and classic have become commonplace. Her dynamic shift to that of a 502s era, sultry front woman not only perfectly suited her voice but helped her reach out to the all too often ignored vintage romantics. It also wooed critics all over the world. Chances used stitch perfect orchestration to support her charming voice perfectly and the pushed Barber to the top of the list of talented Canadian female singers. The last three [...]
Canadian beauty Jill Barber sounds like a cross between Blossom Dearie and Shivaree's Ambrosia Parsley . On her former albums she sang smokey jazz-tunes in English, but now she's dabbling in French too. Which is nice. This is the video for her first French single Tous mes rêves (out last year), on her upcoming album there's another, sultrier tune that I'm posting here. I'm usually not a fan of Franglish, when it's French girls trying to sing in English. But the other way around is very arousing. [...]

by teepoo Jill Barber is a beauty and folk indie artist from Nova Scotia. In Perfect Time is a nostalgic and sad look at a break up but at the same time she sings about the hope that she has for the future. The song is an oldie, off 2004 album Oh Heart . I thought it was a treasure to bring back into light and hands down was one of my favorites off that album. Jill Barber- In Perfect Time [...]

Falcon Lake Incident can be two things. One it was a report from 1967 of a UFO encounter in the Manitoba area. ( Check it out on Wikipedia ) Two its the fourth album by Ottawa's Jim Bryson with help from The Weakerthans . The album dropped on October 19th. On October 18th I went to Raw Sugar Cafe for the listening party for the album. Truly one of Ottawa's best performing musician and songwriters at the moment. [...]

Usually when a touring musician spends his nights completing someone else's thoughts and creating textures to help define a mood, the time allotted for their own compositions results in reserved, spare arrangements. A needed retreat from the road and the chance to be alone with their own thoughts. For Ottawa's Jim Bryson , those precious few moments of solitude resulted in some of the most prized songs in my collection, and a record that creaked with the love and uncertainty Jim felt in his apartment. With the upcoming release of [...]
