R.I.P. Jive, Arista, and J Records

R.I.P. Jive, Arista, and J Records RCA Records has shut down three of its more well-known subsidiary labels, Jive Records, Arista Records, and J Records, as The Hollywood Reporter points out. The news was unveiled in a recent interview between The Holly Reporter  and RCA President Tom Corson, who explained that "the path we've taken is to refresh RCA, so we're going to retire those brands. There may be a reason down the line to bring them back, but it's a clean slate here." The artists represented by these three labels will now be under the RCA umbrella. Jive Records, [...]

Download: Ry Cuming, ‘In the Fire’

Download: Ry Cuming, ‘In the Fire’ Australian pro surfer-turned-musician Ry Cuming had some great instincts when it came to trying his hand at music. Making a splash in a different industry with his raspy falsetto and soul-anchored choruses, Cuming's songwriting outstrips those trite, beachy sounds most are used to hearing other fellow pro surfers . His piano- and guitar-based tunes go for more than just a general laid-back vibe, and songs such as "In the Fire" off of his self-titled debut pack in as much heat as his days in the sun previously have. In fact, it sounds like the crooner has found himself [...]

According to David, however, the decision was all his. Apocalyptica – 7th Symphony

A mixed bag of great classical pieces and generic rock songs.

Photo Gallery: Miguel with J. Cole (May 13, 2010) On Thursday evening, we stopped by Santos Party House to catch Jive Records' showcase for LA-based  R&B/Electro-Funk musician Miguel . Hot 97's DJ Enuff warmed up the crowd at the Ciroc-sponsored affair. This was Miguel's NYC debut, which went well for the fresh young talent.  Backed by drums, bass, keys and electric guitar, his rhythmic slow jams brought together a nice crowd, who weren't the only ones having a good time - the group seemed to enjoy themselves on the stage as well. Miguel invited J. Cole on stage to perform "All I Want is You", which is Miguel's first [...]

OMG! Hot Chelle Rae cover Katy Perry! (w/ exclusive video) Hot Chelle Rae | Angels and Kings | December 9, 2009 It was acoustic night at Angels and Kings last night, and Hot Chelle Rae played a short set at the bar. It was hard to imagine the night getting much better than when they did an acoustic version of their hit, "I Like to Dance," but after being asked to do one more song, the band ended up covering Katy Perry's "Hit 'N Cold." Video of that song (and photos from the rest of the night) are after the [...]

Album Review: Hot Chelle Rae - Lovesick Electric

Album Review: Hot Chelle Rae - Lovesick Electric HOT CHELLE RAE LOVESICK ELECTRIC (RCA/Jive) www.hotchellerae.com Does admitting I like Hot Chelle Rae mean that I instantly lose my indie cred? If Pitchfork can support bands like Fall Out Boy, surely that can't be the only emo pop band that indie kids are allowed to like, can it? Let's hope not, because the band's debut album, Lovesick Electric , is actually fun, catchy, and, yes, you can dance to it. The album starts with a catchy tune, "Say (Half Past Nine)" is [...]

Backstreet Boys unleash new "Bigger" music video

Bigger
There's probably a lot of jokes to be made at the expense of the Backstreet Boys and their new video "Bigger," but a certain guilty pleasure side of me still enjoys it. The boys are certainly showing their age with each and every closeup, and wasn't going to Japan a washed up joke in Spinal Tap (and confirmed in the real life equivalent, Anvil! The Story of Anvil )? Time will only tell with the latest from the Backstreet Boys, This Is Us , which was released last month .

DVD Review: P!nk - Funhouse Tour Live in Australia

DVD Review: P!nk - Funhouse Tour Live in Australia P!NK FUNHOUSE TOUR LIVE IN AUSTRALIA (DVD) (LaFace/Jive Records) www.pinkspage.com Which do you suppose was the first artist with the idea of a three ringed album and tour? Was it Britney Spears's "Circus" or P!nk's "Funhouse?" It might speak more to the idea of a zeitgeist in pop music more than anything else. I've never seen either artist live, so I'm not sure how similar the two stage shows may or may not be. However, with the release of P!nk's new CD/DVD combo, Funhouse Tour Live in [...]
