This EP's not quite as playful as its title suggests, but it's not especially noteworthy either. On his new EP, Extra Playful, John Cale's doing what he does best, which is toying with pop-rock sounds and structures. These five songs aren't actually pop songs, but they could be if Cale allowed it. Even so, Cale doesn't undercut them enough to really make a statement, and that's not the point. John Cale is one of those slow-grow pleasures. At first seemingly inaccessible, and at times overly droll, once you've gotten hooked, he is an undeniable addiction. Cale has been steadily delivering albums for the past 40 years; There have been duds and there have been winners, but one thing is for sure: it's always interesting.
