John Cale alone on a stage is always a joy to behold. The following tracks were recorded live in 1983 at a place called The Gluepot in Auckland, New Zealand. "Looking for a friend, looking everywhere, to go walk down the boulevard, boulevard of friends..." John Cale - Leaving It Up To You John Cale - Buffalo Ballet John Cale - Chinese Envoy

"You moved in slow degrees/A sudden memory/You're a Leonard Cohen song" - Better Than Ezra, "Under You" "But I was caught, like a fleeting thought / Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind" - Mercury Rev, "A Drop In Time" "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld / So I can sigh eternally" - Nirvana, "Pennyroyal Tea" It's almost unbelievable now to think that we almost never heard Leonard Cohen , the singer. A well-regarded poet from the late [...]

Tweet With a fresh, exhuberant sound, Niteflights are guaranteed to get your 2012 kicking right into gear. My first exposure to them was when they shared their brilliant cover of John Cale 's "Paris 1919 ", and was instantly pleased with what I heard. For me, the true test of a great cover is when someone can take a song and make it their own, which Niteflights are able to do while still staying true to the original. [...]

John Cale entered into the new decade on the high of two critically acclaimed records, Black Acetate and Hobosapiens , that saw him giving a nod to his poppier guitar based rock instincts, and blending them with some delightfully experimental use of electronics and synthesizer. As such, it should come as no surprise that 2011 finds Cale continuing on the same path, to similarly great success. Compared to the records mentioned above, Cale's latest, Extra Playful , is perhaps the most accessible of all. Where the others ebbed and flowed [...]

Cale is still pushing the envelope by blending pop music with an avant-garde sensibility.

Lately, we've been listening to a lot more John Cale . A LOT more. Maybe it's the recent announcement of his new EP Extra Playful , or maybe it's just the fact that obsessions happen when they do, and this one is happening now. Regardless: it's time to share. Cale is best known as a multi-instrumentalist and co-writer for the original lineup of the Velvet Underground, and no doubt, that's an incredible body of work. But even more incredible, frankly, is his run as a solo artist. During [...]
Q & A: cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy Talks About Their New Album, hanDover.

This EP's not quite as playful as its title suggests, but it's not especially noteworthy either. On his new EP, Extra Playful, John Cale's doing what he does best, which is toying with pop-rock sounds and structures. These five songs aren't actually pop songs, but they could be if Cale allowed it. Even so, Cale doesn't undercut them enough to really make a statement, and that's not the point. There's a bit of a toss-off feel here, especially with the relatively funny "Hey Ray", and the disc serves as a fine...

John Cale is one of those slow-grow pleasures. At first seemingly inaccessible, and at times overly droll, once you've gotten hooked, he is an undeniable addiction. Cale has been steadily delivering albums for the past 40 years; There have been duds and there have been winners, but one thing is for sure: it's always interesting. That interest is exactly the reason that we were so stoked to discover that Cale has a new EP on tap for the day after Thanksgiving, entitled Extra Playful (cover above). [...]
How do you describe a man who's always been so ahead of his time and so brilliantly talented? You don't, you just share, share, share. John Cale may be best known for work with the Velvet Underground, but he also has an solo discography as well. Even more exciting is the recent Extra Playful EP [...]

Velvet Underground figurehead John Cale's new video for "Catastrofuk" is a pretty freaky scene (basically, The Alice In Wonderland tea party scene + the moon!) which coincides with the controlled chaos of the track. The director is Eden Cale, his daughter, capping off a monumental week in directorial work by rock daughters . The collaboration seems a little more seamless than the one his former VU bandmate is currently working on . Read More...
