Last week was obviously a busy week for live music fans in the New York metro area, so naturally, the concert calendar slows down a bit this week as we start the new year. Soulive 's inaugural three-day outdoor festival, The Royal Family Affair , kicks off this weekend up at Stratton Mountain in Vermont. They just announced the schedule for the weekend's festivities, which includes sets by Chromeo , Big Gigantic , Soulive, and plenty of their Royal Family label brethren. For years now, Club d'Elf has been one of the best-kept secrets in the Northeast music scene. They've have amassed quite an underground following with a regular residency at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA and occasional shows elsewhere in the area. Who is this band you may have never heard of? Jam-rock, gospel outfit, The Word, returns to the stage after a two-year hiatus for a handful of shows running through Dec.30 to Jan.1.

For at least three days in the not too distant future, Robert Randolph, John Medeski, Chris Chew, Cody Dickinson, Luther Dickinson will reforming The Word. Between December 30th and January 1st, the band behind 2001's The Word will followup previous reunions in 2005 (that one took place at Bonnaroo!) and 2007 with three special shows in Philadelphia, New York, and Ft. Lauderdale. If you weren't aware, The Word is a super group of sorts. Robert Randolph is of course best known from his work with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, while you might recognize John Medeski [...]

It seems hard to believe that the gospel-infused, jam-blues-rock band The Word released their eponymous debut album some nine years ago - which has held up quite well over time. The band, which consists of the NMAS, pedal-steel whiz Robert Randolph and keyboard extraordinaire John Medeski have only made a handful of sporadic appearances over the years since they originally toured behind the album. The super-group will come together once again for a two-date New Year's run playing shows in Philly and New York, as a warm-up before for their Jam Cruise 8 [...]

Robert Randolph, John Medeski and members of the North Mississippi All Stars will reunite as The Word for a two-show holiday run in December. They'll play Dec. 30th at Philly's Theatre of the Living Arts and then do a New Year's Eve show at Terminal 5 in New York City. Aural States sat down with Medeski Martin & Wood while they were in town for the 2009 Traffic Jam Festival to discuss their new three-record series, Radiolarians . AS: I'm curious about the new approach to writing and recording music that you used for Radiolarians . This year, rather than recording a studio album and then touring in support of the album, you wrote the tunes on the road the previous year and then recorded and released a new live album every 4 months. Over the course of the past two years, Medeski, Martin & Wood has had a very simple philosophy - write, tour and record. The avant-jazz groove-jammers stretched this idea out over the course of three separate tours, where they played the new material that they had just written, recorded and released for their three volume Radiolarians series. With the project now completed, culminating with the release of Radiolarians III in early August, MMW have announced plans to release a comprehensive box set of its material which has been dubbed Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set. The lineup for Jam Cruise 8 was announced earlier this week, and it's really quite impressive as always. Departing Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Jam Cruise 8 will set sail January 3-8, 2010 on board the beautiful MSC Poesia and will visit the tropical ports of Ocho Rios, Jamaica and George Town, Cayman Islands. With 5 days and nights aboard the ship, there is plenty of time to kick back with friends and see an unbelievable amount of music. Who's going? [...]
