by Austin Town Hall

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars It seems like everyone from Beach Fossils is going out on their own these days ( DIIV ), but the music being created by bassist John Pena has a brighter bent than his bandmates, giving you a collection of songs that's probably more suited to the "beach" title than even his original group. Talent is chock full of bright pop tunes that provide listeners with a chance to let some of music's natural warmth into their lives-you know, if that's what [...]

by Thought on Tracks

If 2011 was the year of a fantastic EP following a LP, 2012 is officially the year of the side projects and new endeavors. From Father John Misty to Polica to Frankie Rose, weve had no shortage of fantastic records from new acts with familiar faces. But perhaps no group has had better individualistic efforts come out than Brooklyn based Beach Fossils. With guitarist Zachary Cole Smiths band DIIV about to release their fabulous debut album Oshin next week, another member of the group is stepping into the forefront with something new. Bassist John Pena, recording under the [...]

His new project is called Heavenly Beat and It's bloody brilliant. The below track is Tradition , a cut from the Heavenly Beat debut set for release July 24th via Captured Tracks . It sees Pea dancing in synthpop territory, combining the hazy lo-fi he's known for in Beach Fossils with some pretty nice R&B inspired beats. I do like Beach Fossils but I have to say there's potential for enjoying this whole Heavenly Beat thing a whole lot more.

But is it a bad thing that Beach Fossils John Pena is surprising me? No. It isnt. I expected something that reminded me of drinking at the beach. I expected shoegaze. This is not shoegaze. Nope, this is bassist Pena s side project, HEAVENLY BEAT and its pretty light on bass. These are his beats. Two of the band's four members have branched off to to form excellent solo projects that don't fit exactly fit within theparametersof the Sunday-fuzz of Beach Fossils. First there was Dive , the hazy brainchild of guitarist Cole Smith. And just yesterday, bassist John Pea releasedreleased Faithless, his second 7under the Heavenly Beat moniker.
by earmilk.com

Heavenly Beat is the new side project from Beach Fossils bassist John Pea. Over the past couple of months, Pea has so far released two singles from his upcoming debut LP that is planned for a release sometime next year. "Faithless," Pea's newest release, is a chill-out, tropical-influenced track that is very relaxing to the ears. The song opens with a poppy guitar riff playing along with the sound of hands clapping. Pea's vocals then make a very soft entrance, and the song takes off from there. Another 73 will be out on December 6 [...]
