So your plans are to hit up Youth Lagoon, but you can't stop there. Once the rock n' roll gets started, you've got to keep it going. The best place to head on Wednesday night is over to Hotel Vegas for the Grape St. LP release; this is the band featuring Curtis from Harlem...seriously one of my favorite records of the last year. Of course, you can buy it HERE if you're not in Austin. Just because we're putting out the record, doesn't mean you can miss a [...]
In a last-minute booking snafu, John Wesley Coleman's management accidentally booked flights for members of his garage-pop band out of the DFW airport and on their way to Chicago, where they have... Continue reading "How John Wesley Coleman Looked to Old Friends to Save His Set at 35 Denton" >

Recently I was browsing Facebook, and I noticed that a local artist by the name of John Wesley Coleman was offering up custom songs for $10. I've been a fan of the guy for a while, so I did what any person with an extra $10 would do and I commissioned him to make a SOTO theme song. What resulted was some sort of bizarre, yet oddly catch psych tune that I really dig. Do me a favor and listen to it. : John Wesley Coleman - Side One Track One Theme : By the way, [...]

Burger Records has put together another compilation benefiting a cuddly wuddly animal. If you recall, the Fullerton, CA label previously released The Kitty Comp to pay for a stray kitten's surgery. Now they've back with a new compilation to aid Popcorn the Dachshund , who needs surgery to remove a growth from her belly. If you're already tearing up, it's totally fine and just proves you're a good and decent human being. The Wiener Dog Comp is comprised of two tapes of 71 unreleased [...]

At the 1:44 mark in their song "Dr. Ice," Bike Cops do something I was not expecting. From the tune's jangly guitars and good-time tempo rises a dank and gritty guitar solo that could easily fit on a song from a heavier band. Yet Bike Cops aren't really all that heavy, which is why I think it's enjoyable. They're another local outfit that go for the whole "less is more" garagey/surf rock approach. Hey, I mean as long as it sounds fun, right?. But they interject some interesting mayhem into their songs, which works quite well. Take the aforementioned solo [...]

Freewheeling, eclectic indie rock 'n' roll is the order of the day on Coleman's sixth LP. John Wesley Coleman may share 67% of his name with Wesley Stace's alter ego John Wesley Harding (to say nothing of a certain 1967 Bob Dylan record), but on his sixth full length, Coleman shows less interest in evoking those two touchstones and would much rather tweak irreverent barroom rock and pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll. Recorded in Texas and Oakland, CA, the freewheeling, eclectic The Last Donkey Show feels informed by a lot of the...

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars John Wesley Coleman might not be a household name all over the place, but he's kept himself busy shooting videos, writing songs and hanging out. Such a storied life leads to his association with the troubadour sort, but when listening to his latest effort, The Last Donkey Show , his work seems a lot more focused, making way for one of his best collections of songs. Immediately upon pressing play, you experience the whirling-dervish that [...]

Things are heating up with Free Week, with tons of shows being lined up for your enjoyment. The schedule might seem busy, but like SXSW, half the fun is skipping from club to club to catch your favorite acts. Here's where you should be on Thursday: The Energy @ 29th Street Ballroom - Energetic punk band that just signed to Dirtnap Records. Wes Coleman @ Red 7 - They call him the trashcan troubadour, I just call him a great songwriter with [...]

“ The Last Donkey Show ” è l’ultima fatica del cantautore texano John Wesley Coleman .

After seeing many of my favourite music bloggers start the annual ritual of listing the "Top Songs of the Year", I decided I would give it a go as well. I originally tried to narrow it down to my top 20 tunes but alas, 12 hours later, I present to you the first instalment of my list...songs # 51 through #60 . Just remember, these are just MY favourites...there were so many awesome albums released over the past 12 months. Make sure to go out to live shows, buy records and remain open-minded to all genres of music. I sincerely [...]

Maybe this is old news, as in yesterday's news, but I can't help it. I've been a huge fan of John Wesley Coleman for some time, and at this point, it doesn't seem like he can do anything wrong. Word is being spread that he's doing a split 73 which will feature a Gary Stewart song, and a reinterpretation of said song-the 73 comes out on July 26th Sophomore Lounge Records . True, JWC might not have that honky-tonk feel some associate with Stewart's music, but there's [...]

It's that time of year folks, the time when we THINK we know what's the best of the best. In a year where some old faces reemerged, and some new faces joined the scene, we had a hard time narrowing things down, but these are our favorite Ten Albums by Austin bands in the year 2010. If you think we're wrong, we're cool with you voicing your opinion, but be nice, these are just one group's opinions. 10. [...]
