As a native Los Angeleno, I have a strong affection for any song that mythologizes my hometown. Yacht's "Shangri-La" does just that. Heck, even the logo for the song does a unique take on my beloved Dodger's LA. The Portland transplants clearly have developed a deep affection for their new surroundings. As they put it, "Basically, any place can be Utopia. But it doesn't hurt when that place is already Los Angeles." The video features friends, family, and collaborators doing typical L.A. activities in pristine weather. The usage of soft-focus and hazy cinematography adds to the dreamy [...]

Photo via YACHT's Facebook page 2011 has been a year of electropop, dance punk: From Norwegian's Casiokids, to Portland's very own STRFKR, electropop has steadily been on the rise. Contributing to that rise is YACHT , also a fellow Portland electropop ensemble that reels listeners in with heaving synths, thumping bass and dance club vocals from front man Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans. Originally Bechtolt's solo project YACHT has since become a duo: For live performances the group is accompanied by band members Rob Kieswetter (vocals, bass and keyboards) and Jeffrey Brodsky [...]

Young Americans Challenging High Technology - or YACHT as they're better known - definitely went for the obvious when choosing their name. The band, made up most of the time by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans (occasionally expanding for touring purposes) make quirky electropop, and despite the name actually stemming from an educational programme Bechtolt went on at the age of 16, he's certainly got the hang of using technology for musical purposes. YACHT - Shangri-La Evans joined officially [...]
YACHT hits you hard with their fifth album, Shangri-La , a frantic, compelling concept album. Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans tell the tale of a dysfunctional work at the edge of Zion in transformation hyper-sophisticated disco utopia. An Elysium complete with insight about cosmic transmission, the vitality and true love in all of us – reminiscent of template influences from the Talking Heads and their label bosses, once LCD Soundsystem. The sonic rousing result is a fitting naively enthusiastic furor of neon splashed synths, rubber-like bass and poppy vocals. Shangri-La conjures up images of similar themes [...]

Look out! YACHT is going political! "Let the mother fucker burn!" OK, so maybe the aren't exactly going political, but YACHT has never been afraid to push the envelope on what's kosher and what's not. Therefore, I expected nothing else for their upcoming album, set to release on June 21st, "Shangri-La" . Their first single, "Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire)," off the new album still holds true to YACHT's playful electronic beats, unique and strong vocals, and provocative lyrics. The track is incredibly infectious and, ironically, upbeat, despite the case that the Earth is apparently [...]

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, YACHT sound similar to a hipster-indie-dance band from New York. Initially the work of Jona Bechtolt, the band has expanded to provide fans with a multi-dimensional live show that incorporates slideshow presentations. The band's latest LP, See Mystery Lights is a critical success with such notables, Rolling Stone, PItchfork, The New York Times citing the band's penchant for "Dreamy pop tracks that sound like artifacts from another planet" as stated by Billboard magazine. B-Sides host, Pete Mar caught up with the band amidst their [...]
We guess you can just go ahead and get baptized wherever you damn well please these days, as that's the gist and collective tone of the newest YACHT video for the Psychic City anthemic stomper "The Afterlife", which just basically...

Sure, Claire Evans and Jona Bechtolt aka YACHT don't seem much like the cap-wearing types, let alone the baseball cap sort. But when The Fader asked the Portland, Oregon electro wave duo--currently riding a tsunami-like wave of praise for their...

Kinda wanna throw down a bedroom studio jam and make a yewtube video 4 it. Sorta wish I could be reborn as a girl so that I could have the opportunity to express myself with music. I think I would start by taking piano lessons at a young age, then possibly learn the guitar. I would try my best to have a 'good voice', but eventually I would want more than a 'good voice'-I would want to have a humble, approachable voice that could fill up coffee shops and let the world know that I [...]
We've loved YACHT ever since Jona Bechtolt's amazing attachment to The Blow way back pre-2006's Paper Television and the resultant takeover and separation of his YACHT project with that of Khaela Marcich. We've loved the addition of Jona's better half...

On the fourth track from YACHT ’s DFA label debut, Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans sing in unison, “In these conservative times / We’re making conservative art/ And it’s boring, boring, boring, boring.” The lyrics, delivered over muted guitars and a choir of rolling tom-tom drums, repeat like a disaffected punk anthem before Bechtolt loosens the reigns and transforms it into a disconnected tangent of noise and rhythm under the repeated mantra, “You can live anywhere you want.” Boring? I think not. With the excellent and bizarre See Mystery Lights , YACHT have produced an album [...]

YACHT - Psychic City This could well be one of the funnest songs of the summer. Its origins can be traced back to a 1987 cassette of field recordings and anti-songs called Two Millions Years , by Rich Jensen. It has now been repackaged as a "a subversive damaged zombie pop banger" by YACHT's Claire Evans and Jona Bechtolt, who have carefully catalogued every element of the song's inspiration (with links to the original tape) ahead of the release of See Mystery Lights on 28 July. You can download the track [...]
