This post combines two things I've been crushing on pretty hard lately: indie virtuoso Kishi Bashi and record label Joyful Noise . Joyful Noise has been putting out all sorts of alternative media goodness, from the Deerhoof flexi-book to a plethora of cassette recordings . Now, they're releasing a 73 box set from Kishi Bashi - available April 2nd - featuring 3 A-sides from 20122s 151a along with covers of Beruit, ELO, and Talking Heads on the B-sides. And because it's Joyful Noise, they're keeping an eye out for the aesthetics. [...]

Kishi Bashi has just announced the release of three elaborate 7" singles via Joyful Noise! Each of the three releases features a single from Kishi Bashi's acclaimed debut album 151a, as well as an unreleased orchestral cover song on Side B. The Side A singles "Manchester", "Bright Whites", and "It All Began With A Burst" are paired with re-imagined orchestral quartet covers of ELO, Talking Heads, and Beirut. The first 500 copies are sold as a three-part box set , including all three 7"s in a custom-built wooden frame. Each Box Set [...]

As major labels continue to exist behind the times, artists and labels with little capital and lesser reputations are producing some of the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring music. Whether it’s creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound from luminaries such as Don Caballero . This seems the time to speak of Don Caballero . Not of legacy or canon, but of the reputation. Despite recent mutations and extended [...]
Gossip 's A Joyful Noise was hands-down our favorite album of the first half of the year. And now Beth Ditto and her band of dance-punks have released A Joyful Noise RMX , featuring nine reworked songs including the RAC remix of "Perfect World" and new versions from Scissor Sisters , German DJ Wankelmut and Peter Rauhofer . Put on your dancing shoes and stream the whole EP after the jump.

Helvetia Nothing in Rambling Joyful Noise Recordings [2012] Fire Note Says: Helvetia mix Olivia Tremor Control and My Bloody Valentine in a blender and come up with Nothing in Rambling! Album Review: Hevetia (pronounced hel-vee-shuh) play a brand of experimental psychedelic indie rock that calls to mind bands like Deerhunter and classic Elephant 6 bands from the past, without ever falling down the rabbit hole of weirder [...]

The last time Gossip played New York it was for the release of A Joyful Noise at Terminal 5 I however was at home packing for what would become an epic three weeks in Europe, but thankfully Bowery Presents had a live stream of the show via YouTube. Amazing, but still not the same as being in the presence of Beth Ditto and hearing that power, raw, emotional voice with your very own ears. I received an email alert that Gossip would be playing Brooklyn Bowl [...]

San Francisco's Deerhoof will be releasing their new album, Breakup Song , on September 4th through Polyvinyl . Also, a limited edition cassette of 250 will be released through Indianapolis' Joyful Noise Recordings . According to drummer Greg Saunier, the new album is a "sensational slice of Cuban-flavored party-noise-energy music." The first single, "The Trouble With Candyhands," very much holds true to that statement with it funky, latin-jazz sound. Stream below.

Kishi Bashi Room For Dream EP [Vinyl Reissue] Joyful Noise Recordings [2012] Fire Note Says: The bonus track alone is worth the price of admission! Album Review: We told you about the stellar new full length 151a from Kishi Bashi back in April and now Joyful Noise has reissued his debut EP Room For Dream on a cool looking limited to 500 hand numbered 10" [...]

"RyBro" finds Helvetia continuing their nod to gritty 90s psychedelic experimentation. Weighty guitars are backed by a hefty organ and laid-back, lazy summer guitar riffs, all of it fronted by hazy, dreamy garage-style vocals. I've been listening to Helvetia for several years now (since their 2006 debut), and "RyBro" continues a trait that began long, long ago. With each new release, I come to respect this band even more. Respect is the proper word, as I already "Like" the band about as much as [...]
![[QUICKIE/REMIX] Gossip – A JOYFUL NOISE (w/ “Move In The Right Direction (CSS Remix)”)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4386014_lg.jpg)
one step closer every day at the time, i won’t lose my mind, lose my mind Good. Polished. Groovy. Solid singles . But lacking the raw energy and ferocity of Music For Men . I haven't been reaching for this one much. [ Quickies are mini-reviews that can fit into a 140 character tweet. They are of albums that people already know of but perhaps are curious about our take on it. What did you think of the disc?] [...]
Kishi Bashi 's video for "Bright Whites", the first single off his debut album 151a , took a quirky, fast, imaginative song and made a video to outpace it in each regard. His latest single, "I Am The Antichrist To You", is one of the most stark and haunting on the album. Not to be outdone, the video of the song is as saddening as it is adorable. It's beautifully drawn in watercolor paper dolls telling a story of loneliness and abandonment. As K Ishibashi croons over light instrumentations, we watch as lost solitude gives [...]
Director: Todd Graff Starring: Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson Certificate: PG Running Time: 118 min Release Date: 29 June This film requires incredible patience. Patience to sit through endless turns of phrase, patience to cringe through the new Christian lyrics of dated pop songs, and patience to realise that your patience never pays off. Joyful Noise clumsily details the travails of a church choir trying to rise from the belly of poverty stricken Georgia and reach the national finals of a gospel choir competition. Given the [...]
With just one hit in the bag, the Oregon threesome are almost begging for a second wave of critical acclaim and have commissioned Brian Higgins from Xenomania to fulfill this duty for A Joyful Noise. Gossip may be seen as a one-hit wonder trio. Give “Standing in the Way of Control” a listen, but A Joyful Noise may be just what they need to dig themselves out of this one. Sound the alarm, listeners are in for something new, and thankfully Higgins knows just what to do. The formula is simple. Madonna [...]

What to say about Kishi Bashi ? He tours with Of Montreal and Regina Spektor. He's a founding member of Jupiter One. A side project of his called Cop Gravy will release its debut EP later this year on Joyful Noise (the same label that put out this LP). So to call Kishi Bashi new to the music scene would be false. He is a well-versed, well-traveled, and in fact quite notable multi-instrumentalist. Kishi Bashi is actually a stage name; [...]

So, what's next? Garage band gospel? In fact, yes. We're about to hear a 1966 LP I found in those boxes and boxes of Christian LPs at Goodwill--something I'd have passed on if I hadn't noticed the Tower Records logo. "This should be interesting," I thought. And it is. Standells lite, sort of. Highly produced, highly echo-ized, and very entertaining for a listen or two. The liner notes tell us that the the Crusaders are "five sincere young men--all of them in their teens--who have chosen the Big Beat as the means [...]

Whether it’s creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound from luminaries such as C.J. Boyd . Proselytizing the beginning of grunge is a mote argument, particularly in the heart of Seattle. Indefensible is what affixed gaze of the collective music conscious brought to the city [...]
