Greece was going into financial meltdown, New Zealand suffered a second major earthquake and the Occupy movement starts with a Canadian anti-consumerist magazine registers the domain OccupyWallStreet.org and proposes a peaceful demonstration in New York City. While the world shook in more ways than one the best music of the month was strangely relaxed with a distinct absence of teenage angst. The world we know was changing in ways we are unable to predict so the music industry headed for the beach. [...]

Here is a short list of things I like: Barcelona, birthdays and Canadian duo Art Department. Combining these three would be something quite super-special so that the fact I didn't is fairly gutting. Barcelona's annual Sónar Festival fell on my birthday this year and I so desperately wanted to go. Sadly I wasn't able to. What you're probably saying to yourself now is Oh well that's a bit pants, but probably not so bad 'cos they played Saturday Lovebox recently, riiiight? Well guess what. I didn't go to that either because I was off busy attending someone else's birthday across [...]

Editor's note: We imagine that Arcade Fire's show at Manchester's MEN Arena won't have the same curfew issues as this Hyde Park show. So why not enter our contest for a pair of tickets to the show, if you haven't all ready? Full contest details here. Montreal outfit Arcade Fire ’s trips to England are often something of conversation and big steps. Last year came the controversial decision to have the group as headliners for Leeds and Reading festivals, which was quickly followed by a huge European and world [...]

Azteca - June 2011 Set. Style: Deep Tech House Azteca Set June 2011 by Azteca
At last the sun was shining, and all I could think about is how badly I was going to burn in this unbearable heat, the summer sheer had to come out at some point though and who better to provoke such cheers then American hero Don McLean . He comes on and the first thing he says is, "I’ve got a couple of songs you may like to hear, and one really long one that you definitely will". At least he’s honest! The set is long enough for him to get the crowd on their feet this early in [...]

It’s all gone a bit mad at Barfly. There’s people dancing like there’s no tomorrow in the venue and the band have been finished for about 10 minutes. Grouplove , then, have inspired an atmosphere that just refuses to die. How? Well, with their debut EP being full of happy-go-lucky folk-pop with a bit of indie rock thrown in for good measure, it’s plain to see that Grouplove have formed a winning combination to make people smile. Having been warmed up by what started out as a country set from [...]
Saturday’s opener were the Gaslight Anthem who, while only having played Pilton Farm once before, made one hell of an impression when they did. None other than The Boss himself joined the New Jersey boys on stage to power through their anthem ‘The 59 Sound’ before he hit the Pyramid Stage to headline 2 years ago. The Gaslight Anthem this time around were gracing the Pyramid Stage and at first they looked like they were a little overawed by it all. Who can blame them when you have upwards of 10,000 people [...]
Unsigned Newcastle-based septet Sharks Took the Rest was one of contributor John's standouts at Glasto this year, so we definitely wanted to feature them here on TGTF. Watch them below play the gorgeous song 'We Climbed as High as We Could' and the upbeat, almost tropical 'Restaurant'.
Elbow really can't do anything wrong in my book. And this trend continues with the band's performance at Pyramid Stage Saturday night, just before Coldplay. This is undoubtedly the Mancunian band's biggest performance since playing their arena tour in March that hit the MEN Arena and the O2 Arena, among other massive venues. Watch them perform 'Open Arms' from their new album 'build a rocket boys!' ( John's review of the album here ) below.
My day at Glastonbury started with a river of mud flowing through and soaking my tent, so as you can imagine, I wanted satisfaction straight off. No testing the water with new talent, I wanted something that would hit the mark from the word go. The Pyramid Stage was the place to go then for TGTF favourites Two Door Cinema Club. who are still riding on the successes of their debut album ‘Tourist History,’ a record which has seen them go from unknowns to a band worthy of appearing third on the biggest [...]
American funk singer Janelle Monae put on one of the most talked about performances at Glasto this year. Indeed, her album sales went up nearly 5000% after the weekend, according to NME. Watch her and her band perform the energetic track 'Tightrope' below.
Besides a protest of U22s tax status , one of the biggest controversies of this year's Glasto (depending on who you talk to!) is Radio1 Zane Lowe's supposed snubbing of an invitation to see Beyonce headline the Pyramid Stage Sunday night. (The Guardian explains it all here , complete with video clip.) While it may not have been Lowe's finest moment to laugh loudly at fellow BBC radio presenter / Glasto correspondent Lauren Laverne she asked what he thought of her performance, I like to think it took some guts to say, "you know what? I'm [...]

One of TGTF's favourite bands, Oxford's Stornoway , made a surprise appearance at the BBC Introducing Stage this weekend at Glasto. They played gorgeous versions of 'Watching Birds' and 'Fuel Up' for Stuart Maconie's 6music show that you can watch below, courtesy of the BBC.

I recall my first "run-in" with Bjork vividly, back in the mid-'90s. My brother, who had just purchased his first car (or should I say massive four-by-four), wanted to show it off and take little sister for a spin. After what felt like climbing a small mountain, I finally situated myself and he pulled out onto the road. "You gotta listen to this!" he said excitedly, popping a homemade CD into a then-fancy, car-specific CD player, cranking up the volume. (Yes kids, there once was a time when most cars were only outfitted with cassette tape [...]

In one of the most unexpected moves of the year, London's Noah and the Whale put an album in 2011 that made some people scratch their heads. They went mainstream pop. With synths! (You can read more about 'Last Night on Earth' at my review here. ) Even if you've seen this band in the past, I can promise you you've never seen Noah and the Whale like this. Trust me. And I am so glad I dragged my weary body to their late show at the [...]
After the blazing sun of the first day, Wychwood wakes up to grey skies and blustering winds. This, however, doesn't alter the festival atmosphere as thousands of revellers are roaming the site looking for something decent for breakfast. Once the distress at paying an hour's wages on a burger has subsided, it's time to find some more great music. Opening the Main Stage are the hotly-tipped My First Tooth . Their current release, 'Territories', has seen rave reviews from the likes of the Fly and The 405. [...]
