I've always been a dedicated listener of Portland, OR's Horse Feathers . So when they released their third album, Thistled Spring earlier this year, I instantly fell in love with the overwhelmingly lush instrumentation and sandy vocals that painted the record. Heading in a little more upbeat direction yet still capturing the feelings of struggle, Thistled Spring is probably Horse Feathers' most balanced and best work yet. I sat down with lead vocalist/guitarist Justin Ringle to talk about their new 72 vinyl single, Thistled Spring, Bumbershoot, and his current state of [...]

Look, Justin Ringle is trapped in a honeycomb! In the new video for their clip "Belly of June," the increasingly sprightly local hushed-folk band Horse Feathers share the stage with a number of book reading bumble bees. The clip expertly mixes live footage of the band with stop motion animation, which is smart: if they used real bees, somebody would get stung. I'm not sure what the deal is with all of these amazing folk albums being released this year. Maybe I'm just paying more attention, or perhaps the folk music movement is gaining momentum, or maybe the muses have been working overtime to bring us such an impressive array of quality tunes. Whatever the reason, 2008 has been a great year so far, and with this new release by Horse Feathers it gets even better. Justin Ringle , the singing/songwriting force behind Horse Feathers, sings and writes in a style reminiscent of many [...]

Horse Feathers, House With No Home (Kill Rock Stars, 2008) MP3: "Working Poor " Recently, Canadian folk acts such as Great Lakes Swimmers, Sunparlour Players, and the Hidden Cameras have gained a fairly decent amount of success by combining traditional folk music with a contemporary sound. You would figure that Portland, Oregon is close enough to the Land of the Free (health care, that is) that a band would be able to gain access to that formula simply through osmosis. Not the case with [...]
