An "aural wonderland treat" is probably the best way to describe the shimmering goodness Kansas City-based four-piece Capybara pull off on latest track "Neighbor Crimes". Don't believe us? Slap on a pair of high-quality headphones, press play and within seconds of being immersed in the song's heavenly escape of hazed-over male harmonies that drift by with gorgeous weightlessness and a sunny indie pop churn in which every new instrumental element adds another shade of depth to the fantasy suburbia they're sonically illustrating, and you'll definitely co-sign the hype. Look at the "About" page on The Fluorescent's website and this is what you'll find: a guy started making electronic music using a gameboy and a keyboard. then he got married, so he got his wife a synth too. they decided they should start a band. and they did. and this is the one they started. That sums it up pretty nicely. The Fluorescent, made up of Matt and Carolyn Jensen, is an electronic/pop/8-bit duo. All that the married couple from Kansas City, Kansas requires to create their beats is [...]

If you're familiar with Daytrotter.com , it is probably because of the extensive coverage of the independent rock, folk and Americana scene. Daytrotter has established itself as one of the premiere tastemakers in this space, contributing to breaking bands like Dawes, Bon Iver, Mountain Goats and Deer Tick by featuring early sessions of the groups. What you might not be familiar with is the impressive coverage of Hip Hop and Rap by Daytrotter. These sessions get lost in among the more visible or "buzzworthy" sessions by the Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird's and Timber Timbre's of the scene. [...]

Meet Emma Sullivan. She's an 18-year-old Kansas City high school senior. Last week, while taking part in a Youth in Government program in Topeka where Missouri governor, Republican Sam Brownback greeted students with a speech. Emma's not, understandably, much of a Brownback fan. She particularly dislikes his veto of the Kansas Arts Commission's entire budget (Republicans hate the arts) while arguing that such programs can be privatized and state funds should only go to core government functions. So, during the greeting, she jokingly tweeted to the 65 friends following her on [...]

Indie Babe Of The Week Our Indie babe Of The Week is Elsa Rae. She is uke artist based out of Kanas City. While little is known about her, we do now that she likes to give human names to her instruments and that she has a voice that will make you melt. "Don't Move To Minnesota" is a bittersweet tale, briskly showcasing vastly different styles of Elsa. As the song demands her vocals to get faster, she keeps right up, matching every single tone perfectly. I'm a sucker for anything with a ukulele, and while some [...]

Kansas City uke musician Elsa Rae recently was featured as the SoundClouder of the day, which is where we first heard of this excellent track 'Don't Move to Minnesota'. A forgotten e-mail to myself and several days later I rediscovered the message wrapped into today's featured song, and loved it all over again. We don't currently have too much information on her, aside from her affinity for tiny instruments, all of which are named that she used for recording (e.g. Vincent the Ukulele, Mozart the Toy Piano, Sebastian F. Schwartz the Kazoo). Her album 'Plays Tiny [...]

Here they are, The mighty Ramones in all their early NYC glory, kicking out " Havana Affair " and " Listen to My Heart " from the stage at Max's Kansas City in October 1976. That's....um, wait for it....some 35 years ago. Wild.

After releasing their sophomore album, Phantoms, in August, Ume has now released a video for the album's single, "Captive." The video premiered on mtvU yesterday . The Austin trio played at the first Kanrocksas this summer. We had a preview post before the concert and Ume didn't disappoint when they took the stage. They played early on the first day of the festival and brought the energy that we were expecting. Lauren Larson was a fiery guitarist, as advertised. The band is set to return to Kansas City on October [...]
