Exclaim I am old enough to remember when "Islands In The Stream" was a hit for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton back in 1983 (though probably more for Rogers as was taken from his Eyes That See in the Dark album), and the variety show performance linked below is really all you needed to know about it. So clean-cut, family-friendly and catchy as hell. The version recorded by Feist and The Constantines for a limited-run 73 in 2008 certainly turns down the glitz and turns [...]
We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… Last year, former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters celebrated the 30th anniversary of The Wall by mounting an extensive world tour, that was touted for its updated multi-media presentation of the iconic album. Last week, Waters revealed to Rolling Stone , whose latest issue features a cover story on the legendary psychedelic rock band, that he would be bringing the tour back to the United States next [...]
The series now hits 1980, which was a pretty good year for pop music. Good enough to warrant four instalments, I think. It was the year in which I turned 14. * * * Cheap Trick - Dream Police.mp3 This was the first record I bought in 1980. Cheap Trick probably were the first hair metal band. I didn't really dig them very much, but I did like Dream Police, even if I had no idea what [...]
It was the age of the country songwriter, with people such as Harlan Howard (Heartaches By The Number), Hank Cochran (I Fall To Pieces), Roger Miller (Billy Bayou), Willie Nelson (Crazy), Mel Tillis (Detroit City), Tom T Hall (Harper Valley PTA) and the Bryants (Love Hurts) creating many classics. Some of them would become stars in their own right. None maybe more so than Kris Kristofferson, a man whose early biography reads like a far-fetched penny novel. Many of the songs he is known for were first recorded by others, sometimes several times. With the arguable exception of Me And [...]

I had a few negative experiences meeting Kenny Rogers back in the day so I've always recalled those moments when I think of his name, which is unfortunate because it's always hindered my ability to follow his career and like his music. I am not a fan of people I think are phonies and I speak from experience instead of just talking shit for the sake of it. [...]

I'm still a little behind from the power outage, so thought I'd repost a Memorial Day piece from a few years back. (I've reactivated the music file, too.) ------- The Perfect Song For The Holiday Weekend When I think about Memorial Day weekend, all the usual things related to the holiday come to mind - but I also think about eight-track cassettes. Hmmm. I guess that takes some explanation. First let me say that I went through the entire eight-track era and never had a car with a [...]

Soul of the '80s, Part 1: In Praise of Jeffrey Osborne
Sartorially speaking, I've come a long way since the '80s. But then, haven't we all? While my older brother Jeff was rocking a blend of Ready for the World and Purple Rain , Jheri curl and all (he and his friends entered a high-school "air band" contest as Prince and the Revolution performing "Let's Go Crazy" but lost to a bunch of toga-wearing future frat boys mouthing the Isley Brothers' "Shout"), I was going for something a little more uptown elegant. My personal fashion icon: soul singer Jeffrey Osborne, whose [...]

SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY: THE SEXUAL WAR ZONE
An Alexi Helligar creation "Love is a battlefield," the great Pat Benatar once sang. But 28 years later, where is the love? Where is the romance and the potential for finding it? True romance, not romantic behavior as a means to an end (sex). It's probably not at DJ Station in Bangkok, Glam in Buenos Aires, the Peel in Melbourne, nor in any bar, club, dance floor or online-dating forum I've wandered into or onto in the last five years. Chances are [...]

Neko Case Gets Her Dolly Parton On With My Morning Jacket in Pittsburgh
My Morning Jacket's lengthy Circuital Tour rolled into Pittsburgh on Wednesday, where the group was joined by chanteuse Neko Case for a killer rendition of the Kenny Rogers / Dolly Parton classic Islands In The Stream. Click here to view the embedded video. MMJ had performed Islands In The Stream back on December 31, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with New Jersey's Nicole Atkins singing the Dolly part that night. My Morning Jacket & Neko Case Cover "Islands In The Stream"
As part of the encore to their Pittsburgh show at Stage AE last night, MMJ brought opener Neko Case onstage to duet with Jim James on "Islands In The Stream." The treacly Bee Gees-penned tune was originally intended for Marvin Gaye, but instead became a #1 hit for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton in '83. Hearing it normally makes me LOL because it reminds me of the worst movie of all time , but in Neko and Jim's ironic hands it's sorta cute. Read More...
