Maybe it's because over the holiday break I became nearly obsessed with the new Tame Impala record, but Conductive Alliance are sounding great right now. This Chicago experimental op outfit seem to have a thing for stylistic and organic, moving atmospherics. Though their last official release, Water Glyphs dopped in 2010, they've already posted a few new cuts from their upcoming full length, Opticks , on Soundcloud . And the new songs are quite impressive as they run the stylistic gamut from moody and synth-heavy ("Opticks") to Euro-tinged, layered sound collages ("Alfred's [...]

I remember in day three of Pitchfork music festival ovhearing a fest-goer saying, "There needs to be more metal" - a sentiment I couldn't agree with more - but not just at the fest - in general. Well, Planetsexexploder do it up right. While not completely metal they have metallic tendencies along with grunge and stoner rock leanings. Their latest EP that dropped in April should quench any metalhead or hard rocker's palette as it features a muddy guitar crunch on "Hog or Hammer" and visceral screams during "Flight of the Falcor." [...]

Killer Moon is finally seeing the release of their new lp Tunnel Vision , and the band is celebrating with a free show at Empty Bottle with Creepy Band and Alma Negra tonight, May 14th.

It's hard to not just plug in the lava lamp and roll one up when Killer Moon come on. Their sludgy neo-psychedelia references every classic rock band ever associated with expanding one's mind - Sabbath, Hendrix, Floyd. Their tunes, which usually keep at a crawl, are carried by shimmering guitars leads and lead singer Jesse Garza's spacey mumbles and occasionally majestic howls. But it is impressive how they're able to channel their influences to fluently. And tonight Killer Moon celebrate the release of their new self-titled EP, which unfortunately does not come with a [...]

Yeah, it might be pretty, um, snowy outside. But, like, there's some totally awesome shows going this weekend. We're talking Psych Fest at the Hideout, The Runnies at Ultra Lounge, Gaberdine at Subterranean and more! Let's go... FRIDAY THIRD EYE VISIONS: CHICAGO PSYCH FEST 3 The best of Chicago psych, kraut and rock that implements sonic elements that are on the fringe of the aforementioned [...]

If there was ever an indicator of how robust and healthy Chicago’s psych rock scene is, look no further than this year’s third annual Chicago Psych Fest adding a second day of festivities. Brooklyn Vegan Chicago revealed yesterday afternoon that this year’s edition, dubbed “Third Eye Visions,” will once again take place at The Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia Ave). Kraut rockers CAVE and experimental jammers Dark Fog headline on Friday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Jan. 21, respectively. Also [...]

Le Butcherettes Welcome to the weekend, folks. There’s plenty on our plate yet again with free shows by Wax Idols and Mannequin Men, plus sexy shows by Le Butcherettes and much, much more. Onward, ho! FRIDAY LE BUTCHERETTES Last time we saw Mexico garage punkers Le Butcherettes in Chicago, the drummer puked all over the photo pit at Lollapalooza [...]

Killer Moon Three get-psyched-for-Psychtastic-Tu esday reasons to jet over to Panchos tonight... 1. Chicago psychedelic rockers Killer Moon exhibit some deep mellow grooves with just a touch of bluesy overtones. The trio of Jesse Garza, Amaris Aviles and Chris Avgerin were clearly raised on a healthy diet of classic rock legends like Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath because the band bring the heavy with lingering guitar solos and haunting vocals. The trippy, trance-inducing atmosphere that the group conjures on songs like “Tunnel Vision” would surely make [...]

Mad Decent Block Party I believe it was rock legends (ha!) Loverboy who said, "Everybody's working for the weekend." Well, it looks like we've reached that miraculous part of our week where we can shrug off the fatigue and get ready to party. If you thought the summer festival season ended with Lollapalooza, you'd be wrong. We're talking about Mad Decent's Block Party in Bucktown this Saturday as well as fabulous shows by Birth (last show!), White Mystery , Pretty Good Dance Moves and Tyler Jon Tyler , [...]

Heavy Times Three took-a-new-passport-photo-twel ve-years-after-my-last-and-it- looks-almost-exactly-the-same reasons to never get old and head over to the Empty Bottle tonight: 1. It's Monday night and more often than not I'm going to try to steer you towards something free. Heavy Times make yet another appearance on the our big rock 'n' roll site. What can I say, a little 602s style psych pop will get you noticed and Heavy Times do a good job of melting your mind while making the head that contains it [...]

Anyway, if you didn't make it down to Grant Park last weekend, relive the madness in our complete wrap up of Lollapalooza's Friday , Saturday and Sunday ! Chicago's Killer Moon is the latest to be featured on the local video series Giant System , which captures local acts in their most natural habitat - the practice space. Killer Moon seems to have an affinity for 1960's-era acid rock as their reverbed guitar, bass throbbing rock takes a slow burning journey through mind altering territory. Make sure to catch the band's psychedelics to Metal Shaker on Saturday, July 24. Check out the video below: 017 Killer Moon from Kyle Obriot on Vimeo .

Saul Williams Greetings, Chicago. After last weekend's snow debacle, this weekend looks exceptionally better. I also heard that it will hit 70 degrees next week. Warmth is right around the corner. Can you feel it?!?! Anyway, there are plenty of great shows this weekend. Lets get to it, shall we? FRIDAY SOUTH MEMPHIS STRING BAND If it’s some raw and refined bluegrass you’re hunting for [...]
