Everyone loves TV, don't they? They do. Sports are great, soap operas are staple Antipodean exports and the news is a depressing tirade of war and famine, but with politics and innuendo hidden deep within their bite-sized storylines, are television series. You get boxsets and live-tweeting, comedy and drama, but everyone's got a favourite type. Kvelertak spent the best part of three years touring their debut album around the world. As such, they had a lot of spare time on their hands, so they watched a lot of TV. Here are their favourite shows. [...]

Words by Ryan Barham Starting off as a two-piece from Philadelphia, Hands regrouped to Los Angeles, doubled in size and ideas and now present their debut album Synesthesia , released via Kill Rock Stars . The band have toured extensively throughout the States and made an impact at many industry-led festivals, but is the record one that deserves a round of applause or a thumbs down? The opening of ‘ Trouble ’ instantly recalls the electro-clash bands of the early 2000s, but there is also a [...]

Frank Yang However you choose to bracket the timeline - the three weeks since Saturday night's show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre was announced, the two months since her First Thursday performances at the Art Gallery Of Ontario were announced, or the 37 years since her first album Horses was released - I've been remiss in my Patti Smith education. To be clear: as long as I've been a remotely informed music fan, I've known who she was and her importance - you couldn't be an R.E.M. obsessive [...]

Duos in music are nothing new, but it seems like indie duos are having a moment right now. Some of the best music out there is coming from groups with two core members, and while they may go on tour with full bands or collaborate with producers and musicians to fully form their sound, its the magical combination of two creative forces that make these acts what they are. It's all about balance, like the classic and timeless PB&J. The sweetness from the jelly is cut down by the earthiness of the peanut butter and together, they make for [...]
We slipped a track of theirs in to one of our round-up playlists a few weeks back but we can't shake this song from our heads. The track is called Trouble and it comes from Kill Rock Stars latest signing, Hands . They're a four-piece out of LA and they make deliriously insatiable pop music; the like of which many of us presume soundtracks every Los Angeles day. Trouble is released on March 11th and it precedes their debut LP, Synesthesia , which will drop on these shores later this [...]

As someone who both watches the original ‘ The Killing ’ and has a Danish girlfriend (and therefore, has attempted to try and learn Danish), I find this video very amusing. Especially after spending Christmas sitting around a table listening to 4 Danes talk (and talk and talk) and having absolutely no idea what the cuss they were talking about. To amuse myself, I literally created similar subtitles in my head, chuckling to myself whenever they said something that sounded like something else (for example, hearing what sounds like the word ‘piss’ often happens). My only wish is that [...]

Every year I find a plethora of music that would fit perfectly on my year end music lists. Unfortunately, a large majority of the music I discover is from years before and therefore disqualified from my arbitrary year end list making rules. That's why I've decided to make a list of the favorite artists and songs I discovered last year whose music was actually released previous to 2012. There can only be so many Rodriguez's out there, so the majority of my list consists of bands from the past few years who forever reason [...]

If you're like us and basically everyone else in the world — unless you don't drink, in which case we're happy for you — you probably greeted 2013 with a fairly sizable hangover yesterday. There's a surprising amount of complexity to be found in waking up and feeling like shit after a big night out, and it's a subject that's been addressed by a host of songwriters over the years. So we thought we'd welcome 2013 with an exploration of musical renditions of the morning after the night before, from the quietly contented to the morbidly, morbidly hung over. We hope [...]

My best musical moments of 2012 was a long awaited one which took place on November 5th, Guy Fawkes Night, in the further darkest regions of North London. While the fireworks outside created a spectacle of noise and light over the skyline of London another racket of sound pollution was taking place inside the walls of Alexander Palace. Unknowingly at the time this night was about to become not only one of the best gigs of 2012 but possibly of my life. Two of my favourite artists The Kills and Jack White would be together under one roof on the [...]
