A few weeks ago, we heard Fucked Up 's "I Hate Summer," an exclusive short single for 2012's Bruise Cruise , which if you can figure out from the context, is a cruise with punk music on it. King Khan and The Shrines - not the BBQ show - also made the billing, which takes place next month from February 10-13. The band's single "Bite My Tongue" will be released on the first day of the cruise, February 10. Listen below. King Khan & The [...]

The Bruise Cruise is an annual event for punk rock and hardcore fans to board a cruise ship, drink like fishes, and enjoy the sounds of their favorite acts for a few days of seafaring anarchy. In addition to memories and possibly some scrapes and bruises, attendees will leave with a limited-edition 73 featuring artists from the 2012 lineup. King Khan and the Shrines ' previously unreleased " Bite My Tongue" is among the tracks up for grabs, packaged as part of a split 7" with Mikal Cronin. With jangly guitars and an overpowering chorus, tracks is in line with the bright, sunny numbers [...]

It's been a minute since garage-rock institution did anything with his old backing band the Shrines. But now they're back in full effect, horns ablaze and all, on Khan's new track "Bite My Tongue." It's a perfectly characteristic bit of old-school hard-soul wailing; nice to hear that Khan still has his Wilson Pickett records in heavy rotation. Grab it below. Read More...

This is a vigorous nod towards the folks over at Under The Radar Magazine, whose staff often list their favorite songs of their month accompanied with nonsensical pictures, and a further chin tilt to our beloved Allison over at Radio Potato who displays her seasonal finds on the regular. These are the (secret) songs that [...]

Now, I'm not going to pretend that where I live is the best place for the Arts. But as reasonably sized cities go, Nijmegen is rather fortunate. Big art house cinema, the occasional theatre shows coming in, and especially the dance line-up isn't too shabby at the local pop venues. The crown on the cultural year is de-Affaire though. It lasts for seven evenings and admission is free. The line-up is wonderfully eclectic, from folk to dance. The best thing about it though is seeing the same faces every night, most of which you remember from last year [...]

Over the past year and a half, Arish A. Khan (a.k.a King "BlackSnake" Khan) has been to the depths of Hell and back. He was arrested twice while on tour, lost three of his best friends, parted ways with longtime collaborator and best friend, Mark "BBQ" Sultan, had a nervous breakdown, quit music, and considered becoming a Buddhist monk. Naturally, Khan's wife, family, and friends were worried about his well-being and encouraged him to check into a mental institution in Berlin. He agreed. At the hospital he was evaluated, prescribed "mind numbing" drugs, and monitored on an [...]

Surprise! Bruise Cruise is back for another year, and in 2012, they're gonna bring the party back to the boat (presumably making another 1,000 socially relevant memes for HRO to 'comment' about like an indie TMZ) going from Miami to the Bahamas and back. Bands announced so far for the February 10th-13th cruise include King [...]

The way they walk and they had hold me so tight The way they love and the way that they fight Sometimes I wonder if Venus could tell How she's made my life a beautiful hell The way they bitch and the way that they curse The way they smell and the things in their purse I really wonder how Venus would feel if She was raised to be such a heel The way they spit and the way that they're tamed The way they [...]
Legendary hip-hop producer and one half of Gang Starr DJ Premier has announced details of his new compilation album, Get Used To Us . The new record is due to drop on December 7th via Premier's own Year Round Records. It marks a positive end to what has at times been a very difficult year for the Brooklyn-based Texan. Back in April, Premier, aka Christopher Martin, had to deal with the death of long-time friend and Gang Starr collaborator Guru and the subsequent controversy that followed thanks to statements made by John "Solar" Mosher [...]

Historically the week of live shows preceeding the CMJ Music Marathon is normally as light as it gets here in New York City. This year things are a little different as the week has shaped up to be a pretty solid one. King Khan & the Shrines is the highlight for us but there's a... Read More

The Bottom Lounge kind of feels like a garage. The joint is tucked into a big box of a building in the midst of some industrial businesses, underneath the El tracks southwest of the Loop. After passing through the small, busy bar area, the crowd opens out into a smaller box, one painted entirely black, a sort of musty, dusty feeling hanging about. What better place could there be, then, for the garage rock/funk/soul that pulsated throughout the place for the night? Openers Gentleman Jesse & His Men got the night going quickly; their slick, garage-friendly version of [...]
