Into The Dark , Kirby's second official release, wrestles the ideas of hostile despair, anguish of being unable to change, the worthlessness of envy and the desire to be wanted so unconditionally. It's a glimpse into the psyche of a man whose spent the last two years touring Canada, crossing the country numerous times. The EP works towards summarizing the vast enormity of his experiences into seven calculated, succinct booms of folk-pop passion and interwoven with hook filled melody. I’ve kind of gotten to the point here at Sirens where I can’t write something substantial and deserving of every piece of music that comes my way. This is not because I receive an ungodly amount of submissions (though there are plenty), it’s more because of other commitments like work, school, being a husband and raising a child. With that said, I feel bad to skip and hop through music looking for easily recognizable diamonds and possibly overlooking others that I should have wrote more about. So I’m going to compromise in the only way I can think [...]

WARNING: This album should not be consumed by diabetics. The sugar content could be detrimental to your health I’m talking about Kirby’s new album Into The Dark . You can download it for free at bandcamp. This is John Kirby’s second release. It is an amazingly strong effort that taps the intersection of Country, folk and roots rock. It sounds thoroughly American with an incredible dose of syrupy sweetness in every lyric. Even though the lyrics could give you cavities, this is great stuff. Each one is like unwrapping [...]

At just 19 it hard to imagine how Kirby Kaiser could have risen any faster into the center of the Chicago music scene. She released her self-titled debut EP back in September, and the buzz has been building ever since. Kirby builds on the sound of the '60's girl-group pop sound, but clearly has a vision all of her own. Kirby Kaiser will be performing at the VitaminWater Winterescape Party 2011 on Dec 2nd at Hard Rock Hotel's Fender Ballroom with Smith Westerns.

I've been doing a lot of cooking based on my runner's magazine recently. Before you jump down my throat about distance runners being so skinny that they probably know nothing about good food let me cut you off and say that I used to agree with you. It was so bad that I looked forward to laughing my way through the food section of the magazine each month. Then I gave one of their recipes a chance. Worst mistake I've ever made as it was an absolutely dreadful dish. But like the rubbernecking runner who can't look away from those [...]

When it comes to musicians, you can tell who is really passionate about their creations and who is really doing it for a paycheck. Granted, a nice paycheck for creating music is cool, but really shouldn't be ones goal. With Kirby, I could hear the love of music and the passion. The email is what made me recognize what music means to Kirby : After a bad gig, or an insanely long drive I’ve had to ask myself; “Why the hell am I doing this?” Then I'd get to the next [...]
I've been told that ambient music like Leyland Kirby’s is a hard sell, but I'm past the point of caring. Because this is rather magnificent. It could be the only thing I hear after I ... read more

The EP is available for a few more hours over at GroopEase.com . If ya snooze...ya lose! I'll upload the rest of the EP when the deal ends. Before Freestyle Fellowship 's reunion album, The Promise , drops this fall, we'll be hearing a new project from quick-tongued rhymer Myka 9. He's fifth solo album to date, Mykology , is due out Oct. 3 on SoundVise Records and, from the sound of its first leak, the record should be pretty damn funky. "Oh Yeah...Alright" is a foot-stompin', throwback-style party jam that pairs up Myka with some other West Coast O.G.s in Aceyalone, Casual , and Sunspot Jonz while like-minded spitter Kirby Dominant stops by, too. Stream the track below and hit the skip [...]

[ History Always Favours The Winners ] In my review of Intrigue & Stuff Vol. 1 , I noted that the more rhythmic, pop- and rock-influences might be shocking to followers of Leyland Kirby's previous work under his own name and as The Caretaker. While Vol. 2 feels more in line with previous efforts, Kirby provides yet another facet of beautiful noise exploration here. Comprised of three songs, two of which clock in at roughly 12 and [...]

Em pouco tempo, Leyland Kirby consolidou nome como um dos mais interessantes artistas a operar na esfera da música ambiental e demais paisagens ainda por catalogar. Um trabalho intenso que adquiriu forma maior através celebrada trilogia Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Once Was, de 2009 .

James Leyland Kirby has been incredibly busy this year, with the start of his Intrigue & Stuff 12" series, a beautiful album under his Caretaker moniker and now a proper follow up to Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was under his own name. Gorgeously somber, with Kirby's trademark bits of debris and age clouding the filter, Eager To Tear Apart The Stars lays into your heart, burrowing deep into the most carefully guarded stockpiles of ennui your subconscious has to offer. His deceptively minimalist pieces carry more heft and emotion in [...]

Paranoid Castle (Kirby Dominant & Factor) released a new album Champagne Nightmares today via Fake Four, Inc., to celebrate they leak a new cut "You Don't Understand" featuring Gregory Pepper. Buy: Paranoid Castle - Champagne Nightmares
Kirby Dominant had already lived the stuff of rap fairytales / nightmares by the time his name began ringing bells up and down the West Coast’s ‘90s underground scene. Reared in the same Bay Area circles that produced the Living Legends and Mystik Journeymen who took the independent rap hustle to its bare essentials – a loud mouth, a pair of sturdy legs, and a backpack full of self-produced cassettes - Kirby sealed his worldwide reputation as a freestyle rap prodigy, world-class battle rapper and impossibly prolific studio rat. Champagne Nightmares is his second collaboration with Canadian producer Factor. They [...]

It's hard to believe I was not privy to Paranoid Castle back in '04, since for some odd reason I was writing for a Canadian hip hop magazine at the time - and no, I'm not Canuckian. The cross country collaboration between the Bay Area's Kirby Dominant and Canada's Factor released One Way Ticket and then never followed up. Turns out, Kirby's appearance on Factor's Lawson Graham (a Best Release of June '10) record was the begining of a renewed studio friendship. Th...

Fucking great. Kirby Kaiser is a girl from Chicago who loves doo-wop. That we can get into. Also.....She's only 18! Talk about a great talent. The sunny, excellent "There's a Boy" is one of three songs featured on her Soundcloud just today. Here at b3sci HQ, we are major league suckers for harmony and 60's style pop songwriting, but for it to be so well executed and, again, by an 18 year old, is something to really get psyched about. Consider us psyched. Kirby Kaiser - There's a Boy [...]
Here and there, I've been receiving requests and reminders to check out this album from the Caretaker, An Empty Bliss Beyond This World . The main man behind this pseudonym is James Leyland Kirby, and this is his latest in a long string of releases he's been putting out since about 1999. An album like this is easy to listen to, but tough to make sense of. Descriptions of this album around the net delve heavily into its Alzheimer’s disease- inspired concept. And while it's interesting to know what drives Kirby to create these sounds, I'm left [...]
