Everything is a Remix is produced by Kirby Ferguson, a New York-based filmmaker. It's a four-part video series that explores the challenges of originality and freshness in a world where creativity takes root in what has come before. Art cannot be created or destroyed—only remixed. Without previous inventions we would not have the iPhone, the Model T Ford, Star Wars, Warhol’s soup cans, or the electronic musician Girl Talk. Ferguson highlights that remixing, referencing and reproducing previous innovations allows artists to engage in a cultural dialogue and allows art, technology and society to continue evolving. What Ferguson [...]

Here's the last four years of mobile patent wars in a handy infographic created by filmmaker Kirby Ferguson of Everything Is A Remix fame at TEDGlobal 2012. The only thing that is easy to decipher is that Apple is involved with a lot of these battles. This seems particularly relevant given RIM's dreadful quarterly numbers . There's a better chance someone will acquire the BlackBerry-maker for its IP before the company can release its new OS, BB10, in 2013. [via explore ]
Just over a week ago Kirby Ferguson released the final installment of his " Everything is a Remix " series. The 4 videos are each about 10 minutes long, and explore the concept of "intellectual property" from a number of angles. Part 1 talks about covering, reworking, sampling, and remixing in music. Part 2 deals with re-appropriation and genre in film. Part 3 discusses the technological evolution of the graphical interface in personal computers. The themes come to a head in Part 4 , which explores the legal aspect [...]
Was looking forward to this one. Not as ‘fun’ as the other ones, but I guess it was more intended to wrap things up and it does that nicely. thedailywhat : This Is Informative, You Should Watch It of the Day: The long-awaited fourth and final installment in Kirby Ferguson’s fascinating series on how “ everything is a remix .” In the last chapter, Ferguson looks at the failure of the law system to “acknowledge the derivative nature of creativity.” By the way, Ferguson is [...]
Everything Is A Remix is a fascinating (and very well done) 4 part series about how, well, everything is a remix (the title kind of gives the plot away). Part 4 hasn’t been released yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t jump into the first three now . My personal favourite is number 2, but they are all very entertaining and equally informative. And then take a further look at what everything else Kirby Ferguson is doing. He might just be one of the top Kirby’s the world has ever known. Although, I am only [...]

Kirby Ferguson , producer of the terrifically informative Everything is a Remix series, created this equally excellent video essay for CNN on the, surprise, ever-evolving “language of Christianity.” Here's the rub: "Christianity is like a language with different dialects, and over time some terminology may lose its essential meaning." I can't remember if I've featured the first two parts of this series by Kirby Ferguson, but the four-part series on copyright and remix culture has been pretty brilliant so far. This time around, Ferguson examines the elements of creativity and how innovations truly happen. The tagline, "creativity isn't magic" is pretty inspiring. Tweet
Kirby Ferguson pretty much just blew my mind with the second part of his four-part series, Everything is a Remix . He analyzes repeating themes in pop culture and evening know how pervasive this is, it's alarming to see in such a stark manner. [via DF ]
