Lotus Plaza – "Come Back"

Lotus Plaza – "Come Back" Back in 2009, Lotus Plaza (just one of the many projects of Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt) quietly released The Floodlight Collective , a Kranky records long-player comprised of ten loop-based tracks equal parts bedroom-pop and bliss-out ambient. On February 14 th , in celebration of that project's forthcoming follow-up, Spooky Action at a Distance, Portland based label Audraglint will release a limited 10" featuring two tracks for two separate projects – both Lotus Plaza and Nice Weekend, a project comprised of Pundt and his fiancé Shayda Yavari, are presented – of the musician's exo-Deerhunter material. New Album From Chicago's Disappears Out In March

New Album From Chicago's Disappears Out In March We're just about a month away from the release of Pre Language , the newest full length LP from the Chicago based Disappears . From the band's site: "Never ones to dither or be indecisive, it's a full-bore assault from the opening track to the last as Disappears attack these new songs with their usual relentless determination. It's a sinister proceeding - debut Lux was preoccupied with death and endings while follow up Guider with protection - but Pre Language finds the band speaking on, of all things, love. Direct allusions to Philip K. Dick, [...]

25 for 2011

TOP 5 1. THE DECEMBERISTS - The King Is Dead + Long Live The King 2. EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints 3. JOSH T. PEARSON - Last Of [...]

Fifty-fifty ball

Fifty-fifty ball The new year already, but these ears are still clinging to 2011...desperately & rather absurdly trying to hear everything & anything released in the old year that might bear on our Festive 50 + 50. Anyway, time to commit: this expanded iteration of past year-end list-making once again tries to get round the one-eyed arbitrariness of shoe-horning all the vitality in a year's listening , the tangents, wilfulness & inevitable shifts, into a handful of its 'best' releases. T [...]

Jaarlijst 2011: #4

Jaarlijst 2011: #4 4.

TVD's Best of 2011: The Best of the Left

TVD's Best of 2011: The Best of the Left Contributing writer John Lichtefeld breaks down The Best of the Left, highlights from a banner year for experimental pop, dance, and recordings from left field. (In no particular order.) Oneohtrix Point Never – Replica (Software) Replica is a fantastic step forward for the prolific Daniel Lopatin. It manages to nail a sound somewhere between downbeat and ambient without ever really sounding like either. Gatto Fritto – Gatto [...]

Best of 2011: Tim Hecker – Ravedeath 1972

Best of 2011: Tim Hecker – Ravedeath 1972 Every so often the blog world gloms onto something minimal and I'm pretty content with 20112s idolatry of Hecker's fantastic Ravedeath 1972 . I personally have a long and sorted history with drone and minimalsim, spending much of my late teens immersed in it, though little in recent years has caught me. I got pretty excited for Blanck Mass , but didn't find much to cling to upon digging in. Ravedeath, 1972 initially skirted my love as well, until I had the chance to take it in live. Experimental music is a sincere [...]

Steve Hauschildt – Already Replaced

Steve Hauschildt – Already Replaced Tweet This is a first for SGTMT , as far as I can remember at least. We've not done ambient music before, but this is well good. Steve Hauschildt used to be one third of "acclaimed electronic drone trio" Emeralds , but has spent the last four years putting out solo material which I've never heard. (All released on cassette and limited edition CD-Rs, so, you know, it's easily missed). I came across Already [...]

Charalambides: Exile

This anniversary record may capture the feel of how an intimate relationship mellows, tempers, and toughens. Tom and Christina Carter celebrate 20 years making music together. This husband and wife duo produce tunes jittery, reflective, ornery, and contemplative. This eclecticism may mirror their relationship as well as their craft. Tom plays guitar, along with Christina, who sings. With only minimal backing by two string players on one track in the New England studios where Exile was recorded over five years, her direct, rather unadorned voice dominates this spare disc. Their prowling,...

Steve Hauschildt – Tragedy & Geometry

Steve Hauschildt – Tragedy & Geometry Emeralds' man Steve Hauschildt is the last of the Cleveland three-piece to release a solo record. Tragedy & Geometry utilizes arpeggio patterns and retro synth-work that span across the musician's self-constructed, solitary landscape. Reading the info on the record it seems Hauschildt has thought long and hard on what he is writing about. The title alone is a reference to Greek Mythology – Melpomene (Muse of Tragedy) and Polyhymnia (Muse of Geometry) – deep stuff. Inspiration aside, the music here is an affecting set of electronic instrumentals often sounding like an early 80s [...]

Avian circlers

Avian circlers Slow off the mark, as ever, but finally registered the new Benoit Pioulard EP, Plays Thelma (on Desire Path ), via the lulling, blurrily ruminative Calder (today's Track of the Day, for what that's worth). Blurb: " Thelma is best described as a place existing in between—a lake within a haze. Against its concave mirror, the sonic territory of Benoît Honoré Pioulard—documented across three acclaimed [...]

A Winged Victory for the Sullen

A Winged Victory for the Sullen (Erased Tapes / Kranky, 2011) I've been neglecting posts on Forest Gospel for a little bit, for a variety of reasons which equate, in general, to busyness. But in addition, some sense of exhaustion and, being in a wholly new and largely unfamiliar place, depression. Life doing what life is best at: overwhelming. Not that it has been all bad, but certainly difficult. So I can feel for, in some sense, the emotional weight of what is happening on A Winged Victory for the Sullen . Not that my troubles compare in [...]

Christina Vantzou – No.1

Christina Vantzou – No.1 Neo-classical, modern classical, ambient drone, classical ambient, neo- modern drone, how about modern, ambient classical. Christine Vantzou's debut under her own name (she is also part of Dead Texan) is an exceptional foray into one of the above – and will have you taking time out and re-imaging your life within minutes. There are records like this that masquerade as experimental, delivering a few notes for minutes on end, fading into obscurity with every bland bar. And fair play to them – there are those who lap up such tuneless simplicity. But Vantzou brings highs [...]
