Lateef The Truthspeaker is half of the great underground rap duo Latyrx and part of the Solesides crew, the great late '90s Bay Area underground rap stable that also introduced the world to DJ Shadow and Blackalicious. Back in the day, is baroquely wordy under-the-breath delivery blew a lot of minds. Lateef has a new album called FireWire coming out, and now he's got a new mixtape called Truth At Sea , which you can download below. The 40-minute tape exists as a single unbroken mp3, and it features guest appearances from Lateef's Latryx [...]

Lateef leaks the first single "Testimony" off his upcoming FireWire album dropping in November. The album will feature Dan the Automater, Del the Funky Homosapien and more...

It was March of 2009 when Lyrics Born announced the follow up to the fantastic genre-bending Everywhere At Once . The album titled As U Were has had a sliding release window since then due to LB's insistent and unrelenting demands for perfection. LB has cushioned the blow a bit by providing a steady run of leaked tracks and free downloads which has given us a pretty good picture of what the album will be like. In March, 2009 we were given the retro braggadocio track [...]

Admittedly, I tend to favor L.A. and Bay Area Hip Hop which might not be surprising when you consider that my music website history starts with Solesides/ Quannum labels. The crews out there tend to be pretty closely-knit, so you get a lot of really cool side projects and collaborations. This week DJ D-Sharp has made his new single "Definition of a Star" available for FREE. The woodblock and strings-stabbing head-bobber features D-Sharp in a classic boasting MC role in addition to production. Kev Choice and Tony Vic have his back [...]
Undertow from outta New Zealand just hit us with this laid back Dubstep refix of a Lateef and DJ Shadow track from the Bay Area Hip-hop legends' Solesides days. Dope! Solesides - The Quickening (Undertow Remix) by undertow Look out for his new single backed with a track from fellow countryman Optmas Gryme [...]

Back in March, DJ D Sharp put together a mix tape for Lateef the Truth Speaker but it wasn't released on any major online distributor like Amazon or CD Universe until November (it's not available on iTunes). Truth Is Love is a collection of songs featuring Lateef taken from albums released in the last 10-15 years but it's comprised mostly of Lateef's more recent tracks. Overall, I was a little disappointed with this mix tape. Back in the 90's, Lateef was at the top of my list of rappers because of projects like Latyrx [...]

Words By Prop Jay On a slow day, I reverted to digging through some classics. Therefore, I present you with this old Bay Area Latyrx jam. The Solesides crew is simply legendary, and Lateef and Lyrics Born through their group Latyrx generously helped contribute to earning this title. This jam is exactly how I got turned on to the crew, and it was this track that later led me to hearing DJ Shadow's classic album Entroducing . It's off their second release [...]

Then: I remember DJ Ack having me check out the B-side of a new single by some white freestyle kid from Detroit that was a new Dre project. I had barely heard of him, the single "My Name Is", but flip that record over… Pink : Eminem - I just don't give a fuck (don lowed) Now: American Music Awards, Movies, Billboard Awards, Sex with Mariah Carey, Grammy Awards, Teen Choice, MTV… all that mess!!! Never would have seen all that coming back in the day. After a long hiatus the [...]

If you buy one album today - buy this. The bonus edition was released yesterday in the UK and Europe. The standard edition had only previously been available in the US - a tragedy, really. Check out the three main collaborators on the album art opposite, then brace yourself for the list of collabs on the album. Actually, I'm only going to mention a few else we'd be here all day so MF Doom, DJ Shadow and Fatboy Slim all make an appearance. Ouch this is really smoking the shit out my soundsystem as I write [...]

The most user friendly album album Def Jux ever put out? I'll say. Singalongability? Check. Rhyme-that'd-impress-yer-gra n? Check. Beats plundered from far and wide? Check. Top notch guests? Most def a check. 'Droppin' Science Fiction' is the debut album from Blackalicious's Gift of Gab, Quannum head Lateef and Crown City Rockers member, producer Headnodic – collectively known as The Mighty Underdogs. Despite eclectic sample origins the album hangs together sonically like a neck and noose. 'Ill Vacation' and 'Science Fiction', the most unlikely of bedfellows, sit cheek by jowl the latter being a Brazilian holiday breezer and [...]

This might be as close as a Quannum artist will get to Cedar Rapids... While touring Brazil, Chief Xcel of the formidable Blackalicious fell in love with the locally released Achados e Perdidos and quickly signed Luciano Nakata Albuquerque who performs under the moniker Curumin (KOO-roo-mean). Achados e Perididos with its pan-continental mix of salsa and funk was re-released on Quannum in September 2005 to critical praise- quite an achievement for an artist who sings primarily in Portuguese! In October, 2008 Curumin released the much-anticipated follow up [...]

Kidkanevil, Leeds based Hip Hop producer and DJ is having a right generous streak right now. I hit up the Leeds Hip Hop Scene site and found what I'm about to share with you. This excellent giveaway is in aid of promoting his next album 'Back off Man, I'm a Scientist' . 'Problems & Solutions' (download via that link), his last album features Certified Banger favourites Jehst and Sir Smurf Lil' as well as other MC's and singers. [...]

Ok, I'll admit that I'm extremely biased here. I could blog about this collaborative, super-group, album without ever hearing a single track and I'd still have nothing but love and compliments for it. The Mighty Underdogs are already hip hop royalty. Lateef and Gift of Gab have been on my top emcee list for over a decade (since the Solesides days) and I've been turned on to [...]
