If you've been keeping up with Trails and Ways ' releases, I hope that you've noticed their range of sound of influence. First off, everyone in the band sings, and they get their fair share of the spotlight on separate tracks. They're like a modern Fleetwood Mac. The singer may always be different, but you know it's Trails and Ways when you hear it. "Tereza" is the last release of the Trilingual EP. The song easily blends classic dream pop, indie pop, and bossa nova styles together, creating an upbeat, yet surprisingly chill piece of work. Download [...]

Is fair to say that TJ YELRAM SELECTAH is becoming one of the remixes that can take the Trap + Latino as a success blend, and proves it with his new remix to "Que Pasa!" from Haus a Holics, and other more that now you [...]

You don’t need a weatherman to know that it was a chilly London night in March when Lady Kamikaze joined us for Heavy Sugar at The Alibi. In no time though, she had the whole club positively sizzling with this eclectic mix of vintage tunes. From swinging soulful shimmyers to spicy Latin shakers, Lady Kamikaze had us in the palm of her hand all the way through. The tracklisting below is not wholly complete, there’s a large slab of Cumbia in the middle which you won’t miss. It was a massive privilege [...]

What rapper other than Theophilus London can pull this song off? The Menahan Street Band lays down a '70s soul vibe that is filled with plenty of bossa nova influences. The instrumental is so smooth, and Theophilus just croons over the track. "Rio" really shows the rapper branching out into new territory. Sure, this isn't the first time he's strayed away from rhyming over a beat, but this is definitely the first major showcase of his range since being in the public eye. Anyone remember " Calypso Blues "? There's still plenty of references to hip-hop, but there's [...]

On April 1st, 2013, Amazon will be showcasing the British-based Soundway Records with a free 14-track label sampler download featuring some of the label's best artists from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and beyond. Soundway Records was formed in 2002 to celebrate and revive interest in music from Ghana and the Gold Coast. In the last 11 years, the label has expanded to release music from a number of artists from the tropical belt around the world. Although initially a label that focused on re-releasing old [...]

mp3: The Rhythm Kings - Exotic Exotic is my favourite record of the moment. Fritz , my Heavy Sugar co-conspirator, turned me on to it last time we DJed together. The sound coming from the speakers blew my mind and I just had to own the 45. To my surprise and delight, with some effort, I managed to track one down within a week. It’s a recording from 1963 by a Pachuco surf-and-soul combo Al Garcia and the Rhythm Kings, credited here simply as The Rhythm Kings. Exotic was [...]

To me, it always seemed like Devendra Banhart was participating in the kind of “golden age” revivalism that can be a huge musical turnoff in modern acts. Though his aesthetic source seemed to be the psychedelicism of the late 60s, as well as its harder-edged South American counterpart - tropicalismo - to me there was always very little separating Banhart, as a revival act, from a band like Oasis (my nomination for the worst band of all time). But if 17 year old me didn’t give Banhart a chance on the grounds that I couldn’t appreciate the explicit silliness of [...]

mp3: Googie Rene - Big Foot mp3: Googie Rene - Rebecca Released in 1958 on Class, Googie Rene’s father’s label, this elusive 45 is one that took me some time to capture. I was tracking it down for the b-side novelty rocker with a giant bassline, Big Foot. Rebecca, on the other side, is totally different. It’s a Latin influenced instrumental popcorn shaker, but also well worth investigating.
