Well, it seems that Armin's new penchant toward the harder sounds of trance isn't going away any time soon. After a gutbusting group of sets during his ASOT 500 world tour, it seemed that Armin had a new realization that people are leaning more toward heavy basslines and techy sounds these days rather than the more ambient, uplifting sound that originally made him famous, so he is adjusting his sets accordingly. I for one couldn't be happier about that. Armin continued his killer streak at Roseland Ballroom in New York City last night, giving [...]

Jansen sat down with Spinner before her show at this year's SXSW festival to talk about her long-awaited US release, her residency at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles, Calif., and the perks of being a wedding singer. Laura Jansen, Crystal Ballroom Portland, Orewgon 2011 We recently caught on to a new artist, Laura Jansen , who has been supporting Joshua Radin on his current tour and who previously was playing in Joshua's band. We saw Laura open for Joshua Radin at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland. It was as expected a very intimate and personal experience. We were fortunate to have gotten there early as the venue was packed to capacity and there was practically no way out once Laura began her set. As you can see from the photos [...]

A ton of singer/songwriters have albums out this week and that's cool, but The Strokes have an album out and that's awesome. After a long layoff from the group, the New York rockers The Strokes are back with Angles . Yes, frontman Julian Casablancas had his side project, but whispers of this albums started three years ago, so we're just happy it's here. Richard Ashcroft , who was the lead singer of the Verve, has his United Nations of Sound album [...]

I think you´d like my new hair I cut it when you weren´t there That pieces of us everywhere Were falling down My bed is now a girl´s bed Pink flowers under my head And pillows on your side instead Of you ´Cause that´s what single girls do Don´t think about you I´m reading [...]

Usually, the "City" in Sarcasm And The City refers to the towns in and around Orange and LA Counties. You know, the beach cities. Without the snow and tornadoes. Who knew that life - with good music - existed beyond southern California? My good friend BAMS recently got hitched and moved to Kansas, and sent this review of a Joshua Radin show she recently attended. I'm beyond jealous, as Laura Jansen opened for him. The two of us saw her a few years ago and [...]
L.A.-based singer/songwriter Laura Jansen has come to live something of a dual existence...and on two continents, no less. In one, she's one of countless performing songwriters hitting clubs up and down the west coast, bringing her piano-based smart/pop songs to life, selling her CD at the door and passing the hat. In the other -- her native Netherlands -- she's already a rising star, having sold 250,000 copies of her 2009 album Bells and riding the radio charts with hit singles like "Single Girls" and her cover of The Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody." Now she [...]

L.A. based singer/songwriter Laura Jansen , self-described "half Dutchie , half America, full on human being", recorded an album Bells that became a hit in her native Netherlands in 2009, selling more than 250,000 copies. Now that album finally arrives stateside March 15 via Decca. Jansen, who tours often backing up the likes of Joshua Radin (where we first caught her in 2006) and William Fitzsimmons , offers up a particular variety of personal, piano-centric adult pop that serves her well [...]

I've never been a big fan of cabaret music other than those peroid-esque films I see every now and then. But this dancable yet romantic music from Amsterdam's Caro Emerald . I'm suprised only a few people know of her music, what with the nostalgic feel of her music. The modern take of Caro and her full jazz band with the infectious energy makes you want to grab the nearest person and do the swing. ♫ Caro Emerald - That Man ♫ [...]

Painting from But Does It Float This Weeklies post is dedicated to all my BONGGING friends who I haven't seen for centuries. Getting together is so hard despite living in the same city. Don't you hate busy schedules? Anyway, I had a few TBT readers ask me why,I post stuff non-music related. Although this blog may be categorized as a music blog, I still am the one who created it and when I like to share something that I think would interest some, even a few, [...]

Not much to say about the mixtape this week. It's been another rough one, and my only thought is towards taking it easy all weekend long. Hope you all are doing the same. Enjoy. Tracklisting: Deer Tick - 20 Miles Elephants - For Laika Interpol - Lights Laura Jansen - Single Girls [...]

indie pop // singer-songwriter Singer-songwriter Laura Jansen has popped up a few times on Aurgasm before: once last year on the Jason Kanakis track "Anything," and most recently when we covered her set at SXSW last month. It's about time for a proper introduction. Laura's unique indie piano-pop is exceptionally lovely, and manages to showcase her incredible songwriting and ethereal vocals at the same time. She skillfully combines rich instrumentation and sweet melody, with gorgeous results. The songs on her latest EP, Single Girls , run the gamut [...]

It's hard to listen to the music of Cary Brothers without visualizing the television and film protagonists his songs have serenaded — starting, famously, with "Blue Eyes" from his college buddy Zach Braff's 2004 movie "Garden State." Chilling moments of self-realization, hyper-romantic love scenes, startling plot points: Brothers' tunes, for better or for worse (but certainly better for his pocketbook), have oozed from scads of them. ||| Photos by Jeff Koga Which can be a curse when presented with just the tunesmith himself, [...]

SXSW If you're familiar with The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, you'll probably notice some overlap with the artists we feature and those who frequently play there. This is not entirely a coincidence, as I've been a fan and attendee of the Hotel for a number of years now. So it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that we hit the first night of their showcase at The Parish downtown. [...]

Laura Jansen - Photo Credit: Jeff Koga Back in April, I saw Meiko at Saint Rocke . Laura Jansen was one of the openers. I never heard of her but was quickly impressed. And though I had a final paper to finish for class, I immediately went home and scoured the internet to find an mp3 of her track, "Wicked World." To no avail, since it hadn't been recorded yet. I finished the paper, though. Thanks for asking. When I was a kid, I loved those fairy tale books where the Big Bad [...]
