Ho ho ho, assholes! With the Christmas holiday coming up this weekend and we're already two days deep up on the Hanukkah tip, it's very much time to drop the annual The Decibel Tolls Holiday Mixer . You know the deal - a carefully curated collection of skewed, brain-burning, monolithic Christmas gems that totally sleigh. Get it?! Sleigh? Slay? It's a homophone, you guys! Ugh... never mind. Tough crowd. Anyway, these yule-time canticles exalted on high can crush shopping malls and magically spike egg nog, true story. For this year's mixer, you'll recognize you'll recognize some jams from previous year's mixers, [...]

Jingle Bells! Tis the season for indie stars to get all slushy and record Christmas covers! This time it's the turn The Kills who put their own twist on this acoustic cover of the Christmas ballad Silent Night. Recorded for Lauren Laverne's BBC 6 Music show it's the last installment in a series of covers that has also featured the likes of My Morning Jacket, Lucy Rose, Scott Matthews and Jamie N Commons. The Kills released their fourth studio album Blood Pressure earlier this year. Download - The Kills [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Saratoga Springs-based electro-rockers Phantogram have been slowly building quite an impressive profile throughout the last year. Since their first show at The Treehouse (RIP) in Columbus over a year and a half ago, they've toured with The Antlers, Metric, Beach House, Caribou, The xx, Zero 7, Yeasayer (the list goes on), appeared on Jimmy Fallon and I've recently even heard them played on the BBC's indie radio station with Lauren Laverne . They've contributed particularly to our Donewaiting family by being the [...]

Lauren Laverne has announced the Barclaycard Mercury Prize '2011 Albums of the Year'. Addressing an expectant audience at The Hospital Club in London, Lauren revealed the twelve albums shortlisted for this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize. They are: Adele - 21 Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi Elbow - Build A Rocket Boys! [...]
Barclaycard Mercury Prize Albums of the Year revealed A significant year for musical creativity and diversity is confirmed by the 12 Albums of the Year shortlisted for the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize , announced on Tuesday 19 July. "This year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize shortlist highlights the remarkable possibilities of what can be achieved with music - the grand gesture and telling detail, albums that are dramatic, ambitious and artful, emotional and affectionate, funny and profound," says Simon Frith, Chair of Judges. "Much of the music here evokes [...]

I may not be at Glastonbury this year, and will in fact be playing that wonderfully English game of cricket over the weekend instead, but that doesn't mean you should miss out on the BBC's live coverage of pretty much everything that is going on in the fields of mud. If you're near a digital radio or anything with an internet connection then here are some highlights of what 6Music has on offer to get yours ears around: Saturday 1pm - 2pm - Steve Lamacq has Warpaint and Two [...]

'True Romance' By Pris. 'Breaking Hearts And Giving Up ' By Pris. Are you fed up with earnest young men sporting de rigueur beards , singing about the burden of being rich and misunderstood? Maybe you're sick to the back teeth of the seemingly infinite procession of quirky Brit schooled, incense burning, floaty robed, 'mystical' ladies who sing about the square root of fuck all? Or quite possibly you have had your fill of homoerotic, metro-sexual boy bands and vapid overproduced, auto [...]
Congratulations, then, to The XX for their victory in the Mercury Music Prize last night. The Sun describes their reaction to winning as "low-key", which appears to mean they didn't invite anyone from The Sun to their party afterwards. It's a great album, but perhaps the safest choice - maybe second-safest, after Mr. Rascal. I suppose with both Lauren Laverne and Miranda Sawyer heavily pregnant on the balcony, the judges were afraid that going for a shock winner might have sent Jools Holland scurrying for hot water and towels. Incidentally, was Jools having [...]
Lauren Laverne's Candypop book is out today. And there's a big, bold (1) in the title - if you can be bold in brackets - which suggests there are more to come. This, people, is our generation's The Old Man of Lochnagar. Only not rubbish or inspired by The Goons.
First, the encouraging news: 6Music has received seven nominations in this year's Sony Radio Awards . Amongst the shortlisted names are Jarvis Cocker, Lauren Laverne, Adam & Joe, Huey Morgan and Steve Lamacq. It's a nice acknowledgment of the high regard in which the station is held. And only slightly undermined by Nick Ferrari getting five nominations for his rotten show. And - oh, sweet jesus - even nominated that toe-curling Bono poem about Elvis for something. The recently downsized Radcliffe and Maconie show has been nominated for best music programme. [...]
With the release date of High Violet getting ever closer (May 11th), excitement and (no pun intended) buzz is starting to really pick up. So far we've seen a live performance of "Terrible Love" on Jimmy Fallon and a grainy video of the band playing new songs live in New York, but today, thanks to the Lauren Lavern show on BBC6 Music and someone making a web rip, we have another new song called "Bloodbuzz Ohio". It's an excellent song that would fit right in there with songs from their previous albums without [...]

Frightened Rabbit played live for Lauren Lavern on BB6 Music today. They played rousing acoustic versions of "Living In Colour" and "Nothing Like You", both from just-released album "The Winter Of Mixed Drinks". Check them out below: (via Peenko ) Tweet This! [...]

As you've probably heard, the BBC has encountered a huge backlash after announcing plans to ditch their digital radio station, BBC 6 Music , along with its sister station, the Asian Network , citing the cuts as necessary to free up funds for other "high quality programming" (read: safer, more generalized programming). Known for its dedication to emerging artists and a wide variety of musical styles, BBC 6 Music is a welcome break from Top 40, and more than 700,000 people stream the station daily. Understandably, many of these listeners — including both David Bowie [...]
Cheering news for most people who love 6Music but have drifted away from daytimes: George Lamb has been dropped and his show handed to Lauren Laverne. Lamb will remain on the station, doing the weekend breakfast show for anyone who happens to be awake at that point. Given that the current show is done by Iyare, that tells you how high-profile his new slot will be. Laverne doing mornings and Cerys doing lunchtimes - you only need Louise Wener at breakfast and that'll be a full set, isn't it?
I yield to nobody in my admiration for Ian McCulloch - god alive, I even bought the Electrafixion album - but if he comes round here having a pop at Lauren Laverne , there's going to be trouble: Do you like the Culture Show? "It's about time they had us on it. The Bunnymen are culture. Can they not see it? But where the fuck does that Lauren Laverne get off? Where does she get off presenting a programme about 'culture' when she was in that fucking abysmal band Kenickie! And there is another Northern imbecile too [...]
Lauren Laverne, eh? God, how quickly did Jo Whiley fall from favour? Rather than detain us with large chunks of music, we're whistling through small chunks of the nominated bands. Miranda Sawyer and Nihal are offering opinions - Nihal suggesting that Speech is a Mercury judge's idea of a hip-hop album. Which is a fair point. The EPG is calling the programme "packed", which with the need to have some runners-and-riders, a form discussion and the actual announcement is a bit of an understatement. Blimey - Elly Jackson seems to have had whatever the [...]

A significant year for musical excellence and diversity is highlighted by the 12 Albums of the Year shortlisted for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize , announced on Tuesday 21 July, 2009. "This has been a rich and creative year for British and Irish music," says Simon Frith , Chair of Judges. "There are seven fine debut albums on the list and five outstanding records from more established acts, all marking out new ground. What most impresses is the imaginative verve with which British and Irish musicians continue to [...]
Ah, the senior service on BBC 2 gets a full complement of presenters - Radcliffe and Laverne sharing main duties, but throwing to Zane Lowe down in front of The Ting Tings, and Jo Whiley off in the studio. Jo presents an acoustic performance from Paolo Nutini as if it's some sort of treat, although she does use the phrase "it's the same thing, year after year" so perhaps she was trying to be knowing. They're currently showing a short film explaining who Neil Young is, rather than showing Neil Young playing live. Is there anyone [...]

Ok...I had actually uploaded all of the material about two weeks ago, but never got around to actually posting any of it. So, here I am to sort of do a belated, better late than never edition of plundering the vault. I grabbed another handful of CD's from my record room. As per usual, the handful covers the gamut of British pop over the last decade or so. It's actually fun to do these sorts of posts as some of this stuff I haven't heard since I bought the CD's way back when. Lauren [...]
