After a two-year hiatus from touring nationally, Swedish-based electronic-indie rockers The Sounds hit up Austin for a show at La Zona Rosa on November 11 th . Formed in 1999, The Sounds have established a strong fanbase through their four well-received albums. Their current tour promotes their newest full-length Something to Die For , released earlier this year in March. The album itself conveys hip-shaking dance-pop rhythms matched with synth-drenched instrumentation and the punctuated vocality of frontwoman/ fashionista Maja Ivarsson. Opening acts The Limousines (Bay Area), Natalia Kills (London), and Kids [...]

Jam stalwarts moe. kicked off an active month of touring last night at La Zona Rosa in Austin for the first of three shows in Texas, where they'll be supported by Great American Taxi. In the middle of yesterday's first set GAT/Leftover Salmon's Vince Herman sat in on mandolin with the group for a cover of The Band's Up On Cripple Creek. It was moe.'s first performance of Cripple Creek since January 8, 2007 and only their third performance of the classic rock staple ever. [via MoePeriod FB ] [...]

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer Prehistoric sludge metal band Mastodon filled up and sold out Austin's La Zona Rosa and then proceeded to trample the audience with heavy bass lines and wandering guitar rifts. Their current North American tour continues on through November, ending in Atlanta on December 2nd. The break will be short with the band back on the road January 11th, in Europe. They're giving away tickets through various methods. One of those is right here on BrooklynVegan. For instructions on how you can enter to win a pair, see below. I continue to work through the backlog of show photos. It is hard to balance time behind the shutter taking them and time behind the monitor making them extra purty for you. This installment of Rocktober show pics is from The Rapture 's stop at La Zona Rosa last week. It was an odd show for many reasons. I'll go into that in more detail after the break, but I don't think anyone that is a fan of The Rapture, ie everyone in attendance, left upset. So Read More to [...]

Having seen a condensed SxSW set of Friendly Fires and the early ACL set from Theophilus London, I had some expectations as to what we would get. Airborne Toxic Event returned to Austin, this time to headline at La Zona Rosa. Austin festival regulars, this was a first for the band, not hauling gear offstage after their set to scurry across town. Voxhal Broadcast came along. More after the jump. Voxhal Broadcast were capable openers, fancying themselves a Rock and Roll band. Sufficiently loud, musically capable, likable just not a band I like, won't judge if you do. It was brief set, forty minutes and good night Austin. The Airborne Toxic Event took to the [...]

You thought I ditched the rest of my SXSW coverage, didn't you? Or maybe you didn't even notice…or care for that matter; too bad, you're getting it. Part Two comin' at ya! I woke up early on Friday to indulge in the BMI Brunch at the Four Seasons, and check out The Civil Wars. Their name had been popping up all over the place, and then the one-and-only Taylor Swift pumped out lots of priceless online promotion through Twitter mentions and adding them to her published iTunes playlist. She even attended their show at [...]

After their stellar performance at ACL this past fall, we all expected great things from Foals heading into last Thursday's show at La Zona Rosa. For the most part, the night consisted of mediocre music and sub-par performances, until Foals dominated the evening. For what it's worth, I knew very little about opener The Naked and Famous , other than the fact that they've earned the right to be called Passion Pit-lite thanks to their album's "Young Blood." While I realize that this might not be the most popular opinion in [...]

They captured our attention with the Exquisite Corpse EP showing multiple levels of potential, wooed us with their dreamy psych-rock tinged live shows, and moved themselves into the stream of consciousness in the modern rock scene, all within what feels like a relatively short amount of time . The female outfit from Los Angeles, Warpaint released their debut full-length on Rough Trade titled The Fool, in late 2010 and this Saturday finds the band in Austin for the first time since the release. While I personally feel that The Fool fell a [...]

To someone who has never attended SXSW, the annual music, film, and interactive conference that takes place in Austin, Texas, it is nearly impossible to describe. Unlike the traditional recipe for a festival, which includes centralized festival grounds and stages, clear borders, rules, and a line-up that is easily understandable, SXSW is a sprawling landscape of experience containing hundreds of overlapping events occurring all over the greater downtown area. Thousands upon thousands of eager attendees descend upon the warm and welcoming Texan city, turning the streets into the music geek's ultimate playground. For nearly an entire week, at any given [...]
