Toronto - "Hi, we're the openers." This was the rather unassuming introduction given by Daniel Brandon Allen, singer/guitarist for Indian Handcrafts , who were indeed the openers for this show. Their music, however, is anything but unassuming. It could best be described as down and dirty stoner rock. With their thick, driving riffs and vocals half shouted and half sung, they join a long line of hard hitting duos that make a lot of racket - Lullabye Arkestra , Lightning Bolt, Japandroids , godheadSilo - and prove that less can often sound [...]
Toronto - The Sea And Cake are the sort of band that attracts a certain kind of fan. They put on the kind of show where a decent percentage of those in the audience are watching with intent admiration as they play. And with good reason - these guys can certainly play. The Chicago post-rockers have been at it since 1994 plying their brand of slightly jazzy, somewhat mellow tunes. Not that it was all that mellow. I wouldn't exactly describe any of their songs as rockers, but there was a certain amount of aggressiveness in some of the [...]
Evan Dando @ Lee's Palace: photo by Michael Ligon After a steady diet of The Smiths, New Order, The Cure and and The Jesus and Mary Chain in the late 80's, the 90's were to usher in a shift in my musical tastes. discovered the Pixies and their eclectic musical stew of surf, garage, punk and pop just prior to their breakup and their last album, 1991's "Trompe Le Monde" . The musical axis of 1991 and 1992 of course was dominated for me and many others by Seattle's Nirvana [...]
Toronto - Wild Flag are, as the name suggests, pretty wild. The band is all about creating an atmosphere of rock and roll abandon. Case in point: when I saw the band at SXSW (in a parking lot across from a Whole Foods), Carrie Brownstein not only kicked her guitar cord loose, but also later slipped and fell while rocking out midsong. And then got up and continued her scissor kicks throughout the set. That's dedication. That same energy (and of course, the kicks) was on display during the band's set at Lee's Palace. [...]
Photo from Chromewaves There are some bands from the mid-902s that for one reason or another, never really found an audience outside of College Radio. Back in 1997 though, the internet wasn't quite what it is today. Modems used these things called phone landlines, and you'd reveal all of your age cards if you were to reproduce the dial-up sounds with accuracy. It went something like this . It's hard to imagine now, but I had an increasingly time-consuming internet addiction that had been in its infancy since 1994, to [...]
From IKVDK Friday night marked the first labour day in recent memory in which I didn't feel a dire need to escape Toronto for the long weekend. There's something about the last real long weekend in our short summer that prompts a mass exodus-but the groundswell of Peter Bjorn and John's popularity since their 2006 breakthrough album Writer's Block made for a packed house in the first of their two-night engagement at Lee's Palace. Fellow Swedes Memoryhouse accompanied them for this part of the tour-Subpop records is releasing " The [...]
Toronto - The thing about seeing an Eels concert is you're never quite sure what version of the band you're going to get. It could be a string augmented, acoustic-based band or it could be a stripped down rock trio. It could even feature one member simply standing onstage without an instrument, dancing wildly and shouting non-sequiturs into the mic, as I witnessed at a previous Eels show a few years back. But on this occasion, Eels took the form of what would probably best be described as their version of a rock n' soul revue. The entire [...]
Toronto - For the record, I have never been the biggest fan of Memphis frontman Torquil Campbell. While I've enjoyed his work with Stars , he's generally been my least favourite part of that band and I will admit that I have thought him to seem a bit pretentious at times. Unfair? Perhaps. So in an effort to put aside any preconceived notions and prejudices, I took it upon myself to check out his other band and see what they were all about. And I must admit, they put on a pretty damn good show. Campbell somehow comes across [...]
L.A.'s Foster the People should probably document its incredible timeline for anyone hoping to capitalize on Hype Machine . It seems like only a few short months ago, their breakout single Pumped Up Kicks was making the rounds. I'd be willing to bet that whoever scouted and signed them to Sony Music is rolling in accolades right now. It's not often that a band enters a major label as indie to enjoy immediate major chart success. Seeing as the band's debut Torches has barely been officially out for a month now, Saturday night's [...]
June 18th was my birthday, and after a day of booze-cruisin' and backyard BBQ drinking, I was moving slowly out of the gate during the evening shows of NXNE. Luckily, Lee's Palace had a staunch bill, and I decided to spend most of my night there with the rest of the bloggers that were in town. Unlike most of the people that attended this show, my fixation was on Richie Follin's Guards . Richie Follin (and his music) remind me an awful lot of people I [...]
Photo courtesy of Daniel Vella If the concert patterns of the past couple of years has taught us anything, it's that everything old is new again. Last night was no exception, with Sebadoh's Lou Barlow , Jason Loewenstein , and Eric Gaffney's replacement Bob D'Amico playing my 902s wet dream sets of Harmacy and Bakesale . Hearkening back to our tendency to focus on food consumed prior to or following a show, we happened to go to Guu Izakaya 's new location at Bathurst and [...]
Not counting Canadian Musicfest, last week's British Sea Power show at Lee's Palace was just my second real concert of the year. Off to a slow start you might say, but quality over quantity, my friends. The last time British Sea Power played Toronto was in May 2008 when they played Lee's Palace in celebration of their then-new disc Do You Like Rock Music? and in the same fashion the band were again back in Toronto to promote their new record Valhalla Dancehall . Openers for the night were a band [...]
by teepoo After hearing their new album Shapeshifting , I was really excited to see Young Galaxy show it off live. However, Lee's Palace's acoustics did not lend well to their sound. Young Galaxy's music is highly dependent on how well its mixed but it wasn't until halfway through the set that they had it all figured out. In the first few songs, you couldn't really hear Catherine's vocals through all the electronics. I have to say though, she was probably one of the most classiest looking [...]
I remember when Imaginary Cities first sent me their music last June . Back then, they were just the duo of Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas. In a year, they've got themselves signed to Hidden Pony Records and at CMW they were mentioned in various CMW conference sessions as a band to look out for. For this live performance Rusty and Marti had a band backing them. Their music transcribed greatly to a live set. Their medium tempo-esque tunes was enjoyed by the audience and Marti did a great job with the vocals despite the not-so-great acoustics at Lee's [...]
