Shortly after Sasquatch! organizers announced the 2012 lineup , which has Jack White at the top of the bill, Jack's publicist put out a press release that mentions the new solo artist will also headline the 2012 Hangout Music Fest ahead of the official announcement...oops. Rather than pretend the news hadn't leaked, the festival's Twitter feed came alive with word that White will indeed headline Hangout and that the rest of the initial lineup will be announced on Tuesday. Here's six other stories of note as we [...]

image via I find myself really hating keys at the moment. I am in the disability field and in most of the places I work, every door I pass through needs to be locked behind me. It's unbelievable how annoying I find this. It's necessary for a huge variety of safety reasons and it only takes a few seconds to lock or unlock a door, but all those seconds add up. It sounds like such a small thing to get annoyed about, but venting my frustration on locks and keys means [...]
A short collection of Unpopular Organic Beats I was meant to post last year but never got around to. ____________________ Post 'Remain In Light' era Talking Heads inspired UK Afro-Pop. MP3: Luna Twist - African Time Deliciously fractured hard-J-Pop collaboration between Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra) and diva Kisaragi. MP3: Koharu Kisaragi & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Neo-Plant Tough proto-industrial Fad Gadget track, this time with more sugar. MP3: [...]

via designspiration After a day consisting of a semi sleep in, a thwarted attempt at breakfast at a new cafe in town, a three hour trip to the city, a late lunch, a visit with relatives, some cricket on the telly (four wickets in one over!), catching the first half of Heart vs Glory, a teary sendoff at the airport and a three hour drive back home... it's nice to know that a long shower and a hot cup of tea can still provide something vaguely resembling comfort in the absence of your [...]

We don't have an art supply shop in my town. We have Maccas and KFC and Bunnings and Big W and Just Jeans and Sportsgirl and Jay Jays. We have two second hand book stores and a couple that sell fabrics and threads and a candle shop and one music store that's fairly tiny, but employs people who have pretty good taste and so you can usually find what you're looking for. We also have Target Country, which is pathetically small and I swear the only stock it carries is all the stuff that's been rejected from proper Target stores in [...]

How in the world can this beat this or this or this? via And the sounds and smells! The turn of the page and that musty old book smell. The creases and blots on the cover from the last time you read it. The dust jacket with its own personal inscription from a loved one. Keep your fancy little e-readers, kids. I [...]

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant : Kashmir [ purchase ] For our Reproductions theme, the idea was to post remakes of songs that rendered the original in a bigger arrangement. How can you do that with Kashmir? It's a fair question, because the Led Zeppelin original already has a huge sound. Not only that, but the original Kashmir was an epic, clocking at 8:28, and going through some remarkable changes. Led Zeppelin used to talk about how their sound was influenced by the music of the Arab world, [...]
Tina Dico : Break of Day [ purchase ] Zero7 (ft. Tina Dico) : Home [ purchase ] I'm commonly surprised at some of the artists who we've missed along the way, and so I had some in mind for Star Maker Debut week. Even then, I never got a chance to post anything by Tina Dico, someone who caught my ear a few years ago. I don't know much about her: She's a [...]
I've taken to calling my little two door Hyundai rust bucket 'Babe' whenever I press down upon the accelerator. A swift pat on the dash, a sharp intake of breath and a decent gap between oncoming vehicles and we're sweet. Pray for us both, won't you? Totally unrelated track that I stumbled across again the other day and thought was worth a repost: Spaceships - Patchwork Filed under: Leftovers Tagged: my car needs [...]

Thanksgiving not only means lots of food at the dinner table but a gazillion pounds of leftovers too. For us, most of those pounds came courtesy of mashed potatoes. Unless we wanted to eat mashed potatoes for the next two years, I needed something to lower the supply a little. I wasn't feeling particularly gnocchish so that was ruled out. My answer appeared, golden and browned, in the newest Vegetarian Times . Duchesse Potatoes are basically mashed potatoes mixed with a binding agent (eggs), cheese (I used mozzarella) and buttered paprika and then baked in the oven for 20 minutes [...]

Slim Harpo : I'm a King Bee [ purchase ] Muddy Waters : I'm a King Bee [ purchase ] I had big plans for Creepy Crawlies week. I started off with Praying Mantis, and then… our internet service went out for the remainder of the week. I'm a King Bee was one of the songs I never had a chance to post. I first heard I'm a King Bee on the Rolling Stones' first album. [...]

One of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving is the tradition of the meal. It makes menu planning simple ... Continue Reading

image via Earlier this year a friend and I started a book club. There are only six of us and we don't always have everyone present at our get togethers, but we talk books and movies and work and life and we drink wine, always wine, and we eat yummy things. Last month we read 'The Picture Of Dorian Grey' by Oscar Wilde. Except I didn't finish it. Shhhh. I had a block. I started it while sitting in the car waiting for the clock to tick over before work and when the [...]

Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow. ~ Mark Twain This is advice that sadly, I follow to the letter. Today I'm throwing open windows and putting fresh sheets on the bed. I am washing clothes and posting letters and taking photos of my breakfast. I am deleting emails and returning library books and talking on the phone to my sister. I am procrastinating. My kitchen is an eyesore. I am houseproud but strangely unwilling to do the work that results [...]
I received three red roses yesterday. They were waiting for me when I got home. Due to a snafu at the florist's they were delivered two days early but having just had a fairly blahhhh start to the day, the timing could not have been more perfect. I am a ridiculously girly girl this week. I am smiling at strangers and helping people work out how the hell the bloody parking meters in our town operate and offering my newspapers to my neighbour to save her a trip to the newsagent. I am grinning at [...]
I had to catch a taxi to work this morning because I met some friends for drinks at 3:00 yesterday arvo and somehow didn't make it home til midnight, sensibly leaving my car down the street. I got in the cab today feeling all kinds of miserable because my head hurt, not so much with the effects of the copious amounts of wine I'd accidentally consumed the night before, but because I couldn't remember whole chunks of conversations, and the bits I did remember were just downright embarrassing. And I was sick, and at some point I know I was [...]
Odd Spot from The Age on Tuesday: German police called to a weekend traffic incident found Jedi master Yoda from Star Wars at the wheel, much the worse for wear after Halloween celebrations. The green-costumed driver had his licence confiscated. "In this case, the force was not with him," police said. Have suddenly discovered art journals, via the magic (and serious time sucker) Pinterest. Check these out willya? Wow. Inspired, today I thought I'd give it a go, and splurged on some new stationery. This is something I try not to do too often because I bloody love the stuff, but I was quite restrained today. I came away with new fine liners, some funky textas and some watercolour pencils. Nothing too fancy or out there, and more than capable of carrying out my fairly modest artistic ambitions! I've started two different journals today, [...]
I could tell you all about my uneventful yet totally lovely morning OR I could just post a few of the tunes that soundtracked it. All unashamedly nicked from Captain Obvious , and all unashamedly wonderful. Marie (Jack Nitzsche Cover) - Family Band I was deep in study when this came on, but it pulled me right out Love The Way You Walk Away - Blitzen Trapper Just the right amount of [...]
