We all know that the Richmond Folk Festival is coming to town this weekend, and while the collective of Richmond loses their minds over this event, I'm personally not that big of a fan. But there is plenty of other things going on besides the Folk Fest. Here are 5 you should check out. 1. WARREN HAYNES BAND Blues guitarist Warren Haynes from Govt Mule and the Allman Brothers Band will be performing a solo gig at the National on Friday, Oct. 14. Raining [...]

When I heard about Fantoberfest going on this weekend, i figured it was just a music festival to compete with the Richmond Folk Festival with a bunch of local bands playing. But then I found out ska punk rockers Less Than Jake were headlining and I had to do a double take. Here is a band that has been hugely popular for many years, sold out many shows and is worldwide famous and now they are playing a simple neighborhood festival? I'm still weirded out by this. These guys deserve [...]

Deathly screams came from cars sitting in the line of traffic, kids in tight cut off jeans and cut off tee's to match would walk by with backpacks and imitation Ray Bans, and I watched as spot by spot the parking lot of the Monmouth Park Raceway began to fill and look like that game Unblock Me. It was a sight to see while walking up to get my press tickets. Personally, I have been to about four other Warped Tours back when they were held at Raceway Park and I think I've seen it all. But when [...]

Susan L. Yasinski, known to her fans world wide as Susan SurfTone, has been playing guitar since she was nine years old. "I started taking lessons with a great teacher who introduced me to The Ventures and there was no turning back. There was one problem, however - in 1964 the boys wouldn't let a [...]
Big D And The Kids Table used to be my favorite ska band years back. Every ska show I would go see, they would open, and their tour with Arrogant Sons of Bitches was one of the greatest I've seen. I will admit though, their release "Fluent In Stroll" sort of made me lose interest in the band as I didn't really like their new change in style, but when I heard them say that "For The Damned,
This is what the kids are up to these days.

Might have to walk over to the Liquor store to get me a 40 to drink while I enjoy this. When I heard their first single Panic , I couldn't help but think of Less Than Jake . I think it was the song structure + horn [...]
Less Than Jake reminds me of the story of the prodigal son. The band had a big and loyal ska-punk fanbase, went out and squandered it to be able to get radio airplay (eliminating the horns for the most part), realizing that they weren't enjoying doing that even though they were making more money and returned to their fanbase who welcomed them with open arms back in 2008 with the release of

I wasn't a cool teenager. I took my A-levels at one of those intensely conservative UK 'grammar schools', a place where late teens are forced to wear a suited uniform that prepares them for their anticipated future as the nation's politicians, insurance salesman and – heaven forbid – bankers. We lived in a fiercely white, ferociously middle-class corner of rural Wiltshire, where – in the late '90s - punk was still making its way down the tracks from '70s London, and urban music was a concept so foreign that 'Crazy Town' actually seemed fresh. Like most teenagers, we had our [...]
