Bruce Springsteen Covers “The Weight”

Bruce Springsteen - The Weight 05/02/12 Newark, NJ Tribute to Levon Helm of The Band
Today, we got to hear " Toast To Freedom ," one of the last songs Levon Helm recorded. And now here's a video of Bruce Springsteen at last night's Newark show, singing one of the songs Helm made famous, just like Bon Iver and the Black Keys have done in recent weeks. Springsteen started off last night's encore by covering " The Weight ," and we've got the fan-made video below. Read More...

Levon Helm, 'Toast to Freedom' -- One of His Last Songs Features All-Star Cast

Toast To Freedom - Music Video (long version)
Filed under: News , New Music , New Releases Douglas Mason, Getty Images Though we lost Levon Helm , recent weeks have shown that his music is still alive as ever. We've heard " The Weight " more times in the last month that we probably had in the previous several years combined, and we are all better for it. Today, we are graced with new music from the legendary Helm, [...]

Bruce Springsteen, “The Weight”

The Weight - Bruce Springsteen 5/2/2012 @ Prudential Center
The Boss, aka Bruce Springsteen for those living under a rock the past 30 years, played a show in Newark, NJ last night, and as part of the encore he dropped a pretty sick cover of The Band's classic tune " The Weight " as a tribute to the late-great Levon Helm . Stick around to watch the entire song. Towards the end when the crowd really joins in to sing-a-long is almost a religious experience. It's moving, to say the least.

Springsteen Finally Plays One For Levon

Bruce Springsteen - The Weight (original by The Band) prude
The first leg of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Wrecking Ball came to a close tonight at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Not only did The Boss bust out a song he hadn't performed in 39 years, but he also led a singalong tribute to the late Levon Helm. [A Video Surfaced on YouTube Immediately After The Show - Not The Best Quality] To start, the 17-piece band opened with the second No Surrender of the tour before tackling the newer We Take Care of Our [...]

In Memoriam – April 2012

In Memoriam – April 2012 The name Andrew Love will probably mean little to most music fans; but as a leader of the Memphis Horns (with Wayne Jackson), everybody will know at least some tunes the tenor saxophonist played on. The Memphis Horns were part of Stax’s session crew, and they also recorded on Hi Records. You’ll know them from tracks such as Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds, Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together and Dusty Springfield’s Son Of A Preacher Man. They are believed to have played on something like fifty #1 singles! This year they received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, [...]

What Levon Helm Meant to Woodstock

Filed under: Exclusive , Spinner Says Douglas Mason, Getty Images If you go to the Woodstock the way I go, crossing the Hudson and heading west, before you get into town you'll pass a sign on the side of the road. This particular sign celebrates the most recent album by Levon Helm , Electric Dirt , its cover writ large on a blown-up canvas. But, really, the sign celebrates Levon himself, the Midnight Rambles he throws [...]

Bloggy Goodness: Bonnaroo Gets The Gambler

Bloggy Goodness: Bonnaroo Gets The Gambler Each year we're more and more impressed by Bonnaroo's ability to mix both classic and contemporary acts from across multiple genres, but we also love when they seem to throw the proverbial curve ball. Yesterday fest organizers did just that, when they revealed that country legend and former rotisserie chicken impresario Kenny Rogers had been added to the lineup. Rogers, who is best known as the singer of the country classic The Gambler and karaoke staple Islands In The Stream, has released 32 studio albums, charting 21 number one hits and selling a staggering 68 million [...]

Video/Levon Helm Tribute Du Jour: John Fogerty & the Black Keys

Video/Levon Helm Tribute Du Jour: John Fogerty & the Black Keys Levon Helm There have been a lot of tributes to fallen singer Levon Helm since he died last week - none better, though, than this affectionate yet clear-eyed appreciation by Peter Gerstenzang that appeared in the Village Voice . Here is one appropriate excerpt: " After I got the news yesterday that he'd died, I got into the car to drive around and think, two things I'm never good at doing simultaneously. Foolishly, I turned on the radio, expecting to hear The Band's music blasting, from one end of the dial to the [...]

Watch Black Keys & John Fogerty Cover The Band

The Black Keys with John Fogerty covering The Weight
The night that we lost Levon Helm , the great singer/drummer for the Band, Bon Iver played tribute by covering the Band's "Ophelia." One night after that, in their headlining spot at the second Coachella weekend, the Black Keys paid a grand-scale tribute of their own. Inviting former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman and classic-rock archduke John Fogerty to the stage, the band covered the almighty Helm-sung Band song " The Weight ." Watch a fan-made video of the performance below. (The camera starts out sideways, but it doesn't stay that way, so don't worry.) Read [...]

The Black Keys y John Fogerty hacen un cover de The Band

R.I.P. Levon Helm

Phil writes: Another member of the legendary band follows Richard Manuel and Rick Danko offstage. One of the extraordinary things about the Band was the sheer excellence of every member. None of them was really ever the same after the surely premature decision to dis-Band, though the reformed band (minus Robbie Robertson) of the nineties was very good by any standard and I reckon they made better albums than RR. Here's Levon Helm at Woodstock singing possibly the best Band song (and in his view, and the view of other members of the Band, like much of [...]

Wilco, Nick Lowe & Mavis Staples cover The Band

Wilco, Nick Lowe & Mavis Staples cover The Band YouTube Not the best week for the world of music, this past one. First there was the news that Robin Gibb of The Bee-Gees , who'd started the month with the good news that his cancer was in remission, had fallen into a coma due to pneumonia; then on Wednesday, Dick Clark was felled by a heart attack . Arguably the hardest blow came Thursday, however, when it was announced that Levon Helm - drummer and vocalist for The Band - had passed away from a [...]

RIP Levon Helm

RIP Levon Helm Levon Helm. The master at work. 1940-2012. Photo: John Storey Levon Helm died on Thursday and I'm still trying to process this fact. I think I'm in denial. He was the heart (and balls) of The Band , a loose, funky timekeeper who possessed a glorious redneck howl. Helm's genius was that his rock 'n' roll singing was totally rooted in country, and yet his drumming was [...]

Remembering Levon Helm

Remembering Levon Helm Writing this post difficult for me. I am a man who loves music, and tends to hold musicians in an esteem that could easily be described as not completely healthy.  Men such as myself with the aforementioned music affliction are bound to have our favorites, and for me Levon Helm is in the company of about a handful of other gentleman who's music has affected me in such an impactful way. That said, when I heard the sad news from Levon's family I knew I had to write this post, and wanted to somehow, someway make it something [...]

The Black Keys e John Fogerty apresentam cover de The Band no Coachella

The Black Keys with John Fogerty covering The Weight
