R.I.P. Levon Helm

Phil writes: Another member of the legendary band follows Richard Manuel and Rick Danko offstage. One of the extraordinary things about the Band was the sheer excellence of every member. None of them was really ever the same after the surely premature decision to dis-Band, though the reformed band (minus Robbie Robertson) of the nineties was very good by any standard and I reckon they made better albums than RR. Here's Levon Helm at Woodstock singing possibly the best Band song (and in his view, and the view of other members of the Band, like much of [...]

If there’s only one thing you do this weekend…

If there’s only one thing you do this weekend… ...Watch The Last Waltz in tribute to Levon Helm who passed away yesterday. The Band's drummer and singer was 71. I don't have an intimate knowledge of the discography of the man but I will say this: Scorsese's The Last Waltz film of The Band's farewell gig is the greatest music concert I've ever seen committed to film. It has personal significance to me as I was introduced to it by Aoife when we started going out so it'll always remind me of that time, particularly 'The Weight' where you seen Helm leading [...]

The Band, The Weight
Today, April 19, 2012, the world lost a legend of music and life: Levon Helm. The drummer/singer/songwriter of The Band has influenced me immensely in my own musical life. I’m now sitting in my living room watching The Last Waltz - a timeless piece of musical cinema directed by Martin Scorcese about The Band’s last performance together. Pouring a sip out for Levon Helm. A legend of music. Legends never die.

The Band’s Levon Helm Dies at 71

The Last Waltz - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.mpg
As Levon Helm, the drummer and singer for the Band, once famously wrote, "If it doesn't come from your heart music just doesn't work." It was just a few days ago that his family publicly announced that he was in the final stages of a long battle with throat cancer; today we're saddened to learn that the Arkansas-born roots-music patriarch has died at the age of 71. "Mr. Helm's drumming valued space over showiness," reads his New York Times obituary . "He gave his drums a muffled, bottom-heavy sound that placed them in [...]

Levon Helm Has Died

Rare Concert Footage of The Band, 1970
Levon Helm of the Band died at 10:30 Eastern time this morning. He was an amazing drummer, and incredible singer, and also a very good actor ( Coal Miner's Daughter !) I've heard a great, hilarious story about Levon that I can't repeat here, but if you see me sometime, grab me and I'll tell it to you. The man was a champion. Here are two wonderful videos, one old and one new. The Band at Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh, 1970. And here's a PBS video from one of Levon's [...]
