My favourite producer of all times, Brian Eno, is one of the innovators of electronic music and the Yoda of ambient soundscapes. He has put out more than 40 solo albums, and are one of the most productive musicians/producers on this planet. Brian Eno has produced major acts like David Bowie, Grace Jones, U2, Coldplay, [...] Mr B's Sunday Chill Session. is a post from: FAT BERRI'S | Electronic Music Blog

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases January 1, 2011 marked the first anniversary of the passing of celebrated Montreal singer-songwriter Lhasa de Sala, known to her fans simply as Lhasa. In honour of their good friend, who succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 37, fellow Montreal musician Patrick Watson has collaborated with instrumental group Esmerine to release 'Snow Day for Lhasa.' "When she passed [...]

Click image to download these albums While assembling a top list for 2009 I found that there were four albums that really blew me away and stuck with me for the entire year. Trying to choose another six seemed a little silly to me, so here are my top four, with an honorable mention category for number five. Lhasa de Sela and Jay Reatard put out fantastic albums in 2009 and both died young in early 2010. I highly recommend checking out "Lhasa" and "Watch Me Fall." 4. The world has lost a talent so immeasurable many will continue without knowing what they have lost. Mexican-American Montreal based chanteuse Lhasa de Sela passed away this January 1st from breast cancer at the age of 37. One of my favorite singers ever, Lhasa's voice and musical styles were unusual and haunting; no one out there was like her, not by a long shot. Lhasa exploded onto the scene in 1997 with the release of her album La Llorona (composed in Spanish) which blended Eastern European gypsy folk musics with Mexican musical genres. No [...]

Lhasa - Anywhere On This Road As we all have been seeing and hearing, we saw yet another "untimely death' of a very talented and well known artist today, Jay Retard. Due to the Holidays, or perhaps the flood of bad news, some may have missed the death of Lhasa de Sela who was born in America but was quite an exotic blend. Her first album, "La Llorona", as a curiosity, an exotic accident. The singer and songwriter appeared from nowhere in 1997 with an album that defied definition, capturing a Latin world of her own [...]

This week brought the sad news that Montreal-based singer-songwriter Lhasa De Sela passed away on New Year's Day, after a 21-month battle with breast cancer. The American-born artist had a one-of-a-kind upbringing with her Mexican father and American mother, spending most of her childhood traveling between the two countries, developing her unique and decidedly pan-cultural artistic skills that led her to sing in English, Spanish, and French. From her official site: "Lhasa's unusual childhood was marked by long periods of nomadic wandering through Mexico and the U.S., with her parents and sisters in [...]

Lhasa - "Fool's Gold" The singer Lhasa de Sela died on New Year's Day, after a long illness. She was 37. I saw Lhasa perform only once, at a concert that was being shot by the filmmaker Vincent Moon. I did not know her music very well. We sat in a circle around she and the band. She moved among us like a moon, with grace and purpose. She was very serious and yet always smiling. She was wise, I think, even though I only heard her sing. She sang songs like this one, and [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. , Canada Sad rumours began spreading around the Internet over the weekend that Montreal-based Mexican-American singer-songwriter Lhasa de Sela had passed away. Late Sunday night, the news became official when Lhasa's record label Audiogram confirmed what so many had feared. On Monday January 1, "just before midnight," Lhasa de Sela died at the age of 37 in her Montreal home following a 21-month struggle with breast cancer. Her health issues became widely known last fall when Lhasa [...]

A few years ago, I went to see The Marriage of Figaro . Not my favourite opera , but related at least. It was a pleasant enough experience, but I wasn't all that impressed by the supertitles projected above the stage. I'd seen foreign movies, so I was prepared to read and watch at the same time. I wasn't, however, prepared for how pedestrian the libretto seemed when translated to English. I get what Opera is trying to do with the supertitles, and I appreciate that they're trying to broaden the audience and democratize the artform. But, geez, [...]

Part 1 was written yesterday. Since I have to fill in for a few writers, I'm going to have to rush this. Without wasting any time: Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country 100 years Ago by Tim Hecker Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Now THIS belongs on the Polaris Prize nomination list. I love it. Wall of sound hits the right nerves, abstract and trippy - yet freaking awesome. Time to get a review copy . [...]

photo: Carl Lessard) I knew very little about Mexican-American folk artist Lhasa de Sela, who records under the name Lhasa , before she appeared on the Polaris Music Prize long list last week, and in many ways, I feel that now I know even less. She has amassed accolades the world over for her globally-inspired music, appeared on Tindersticks albums, performed in a circus with her two sisters in France, and was raised out of the back of a converted school bus that crisscrossed the U.S. and Mexico. Imagine the stories [...]

Last week I was going to post about my predictions for what will end up on the Polaris Music Prize Long List this year, and I'm glad I didn't. With hindsight, after seeing the long list, I realized that there's a lot I couldn't possibly account for when 190 judges are having their say, and only a handful regularly contribute to the online discussion group set up for us. It's a pretty diverse list, more so than last year's, which should make choosing the 10 that will end up on the short list that much more [...]
