Formed at the turn of the century, Glasgow's Life Without Buildings are something of an anomaly: their sound and obvious influences suited perfectly to the prevailing sounds of the time, blending the stuttering rhythmic enchantment of Can with the relaxed, mumbling style of Galaxie 500. Along with the angular guitar lines reminiscent of Television, they created a sound not a million miles from the post-punk revivalists who enjoyed so much success in the early 2000s such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Liars, yet they enjoyed little success or press attention. Perhaps the feature which set apart Life [...]

Life Without Buildings — The Leanover (2001) I'd like to thank Star Slinger for turning me on to Life Without Buildings , a fantastic (and shortly-lived) four-piece from Glasgow. Any Other City 's "The Leanover", which he magnificently sampled in "May I Walk With You" , is a near-perfect mix of talk-sung vocals and sparse post-punk hooks. The live version (from Live at the Annandale Hotel ) is also a force to be reckoned with. [ mp3 [...]

I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand. Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man? New sensations barely interest me for another day. I've got the spirit, lose the feeling, take the shock away. It's getting faster, moving faster now, it's getting out of hand. On the tenth [...]
Cory Brown is a busy guy. He founded Absolutely Kosher Records 12 years ago and has Misra Records to manage at the same time. He is responsible for records from Sunset Rubdown, The Wrens, Xiu Xiu, The Mountain Goats and The Low Lows amongst many other big names on the underground scene. Despite the hectic schedule, he still found time to catch up with us here at A Pocket Full Of Seeds for a bit of chat. . With the debut Laarks album getting a great reception, latest signings [...]

Indie-electro trio Union of Knives this week revealed that they had split up, and with the announcement came the now obligatory goodbye statement. Sometimes a band's last words are witty, more often they're as bitter as a lemon marinated in vinegar. We've compiled a dozen of the best break-up speeches by Scottish groups, starting with the most recent. Will the last to leave please switch off the lights? UNION OF KNIVES (January 2010) Craig Grant (singer): [...]
Allow me to offer a brief apology to DC's independent record shops: I haven't graced your doorways in a while. I'm ashamed and I apologize. Oh, it's not for not wanting to, or should I say needing to. It's a balm to my psyche to be thumbing through your stacks of sheathed LPs. It's that, well...as we've been planning the 3rd installment of The Washington DC Record Fair this coming Sunday at Comet Ping Pong, I've felt the need to keep my wallet close by my side. I mean, I know what we have planned [...]

Every now and again something I'll run across something that I instantly love. Coming up with new content for here on a daily basis means that I post a lot of stuff that I like, but don't have that immediate connection with. The ones that do tend to be the bands that end up being part of our Great British Hopes series. Assuming that they are British of course. The Sailplanes are currently based in Berlin, but luckily for me they formed in London. They make a kind of noisy, messy pop that is [...]

Last night, I went to see Black Watch at St. Ann's Warehouse (thanks, Karl!). I was kind of blown away by how good it was and some of the thematic food for thought it provided. It also got me thinking about the Scots and their pretty unique cultural contributions (bagpipes, kilts, Belle and Sebastian…hello!). This song doesn't really have anything to do with the content presented in the play, but it is from Scottish art school band, Life Without Buildings . I really liked listening [...]

Accordions, glockenspiels and handclaps dominate on the indie pop gem, Heirloom [ buy ], from Vancouver collective Wintermitts . Alternating between French and English, lead singer Lise Monique 's enchanting vocals are a combination of Karen O ( Yeah Yeah Yeahs ), Josephine Olausson ( Love Is All ) and Sue Tompkins ( Life Without Buildings ). Enjoy. Schoolyard mp3 DANS mp3 [...]

I think that what makes this song, by London's Stricken City , is the non-breathy vocal turn from Rebekah Raa. Sounding bolder and less flimsy than much of her indie cohorts, Raa steals "Lost Art" from the pretty snazzy, decidedly London-y, happenings behind her. I was just thinking about Beat Happening this morning, and wishing that they would get ripped off more (seriously), and then I heard this, and was a little bit satisfied. There's also a teensy bit of my beloved Life Without Buildings , whom you must hear before continuing to be a peruser of this [...]

Let no man claim that Dave Klein is less than thorough with his regular Numerology posts. I will not stand for it! Buuuut on the occasional occasion that the Venn Diagram of Klein's record collection and mine have diverged, I have taken it upon myself to drop him a line--a duty which I have sporadically neglected. Note, I'm not claiming that Dave's picks for these numbers were wrong per se, or that these three tracks from the 00s are the rightful heirs to their respective numerical thrones, just that they exist and demand a reckoning. Tony and Tupac? It was inevitable, with all of his posthumous releases, that Tupac would eventually be collected in a duets album (ironically named Evolution ). Even though Tupac is dead (wink wink), it's hardly an appalling assembly since there's not much difference when all of the other "duet" albums have been quite literally phoned in. That doesn't mean you should go out and buy it though, especially since there are a few other things you might want to stock up on first. Take along a crib of Largehearted Boy [...]

Well, the closest thing to new material that you're going to get from a band that broke up five years ago. Like many people, I was very late to the Life Without Buildings party. In fact, it was pretty much a year ago to the day that I first heard them. They seem to be everywhere of late though, which is quite an achievement given how short their musical career was. Forming in Glasgow in 1999 and breaking up in 2002 left them with little more than a single album to their name. The [...]
Life Without Buildings "Liberty Feelup (Live)" - Life Without Buildings recorded a fantastic and distinct album, toured a little bit, and split up all in the span of a couple years at the beginning of this decade. They quit while they were ahead and can claim a spotless legacy, and while that's quite cool and sorta romantic, it's incredibly frustrating just the same. There's a certain magic to the sound of Life Without Building's music, but there's no good reason for the audience, much less the band themselves, to imagine that they weren't capable of topping [...]
