Instead of reinventing the wheel this Christmas, let's recycle a past post or two. Today, the holidays in the Lone Star State! Christmas in Texas is pretty much like Christmas in any other place - except most of the time it's hot, everybody's playin' football, people are barbecuing and drinking beer, there's a lot of country music and blues and rock, and the stuffing has jalapenos in it. Okay, it's like no place else. MP3: "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" by the Texas Tornados [...]

When it comes to original Texas blues guitar, Lightnin' Hopkins is the man. Utterly naturalistic, haunting and lonesome, this is where the fingerpicking style came from. Here he is singing unaccompanied, and it's devastating stuff. Lightnin' Hopkins - Buddy Brown's Blues (alternate download)

Hurricane Ike from 2008. By now everyone should be ready for this big storm. Just remember - when the wind's blowin' stay indoors, and try to find high ground when the floodwaters come. These big storms are products of Mother Nature, who doesn't give a shit if you live in New York City or Podunk, N.J. She couldn't care less if you have someplace to be or something to do, and if you think you are going to show Mother Nature how tough you are then she may just want [...]
"In the late 1960's, the Seattle Folklore Society and KCTS public television video taped various acts that came through town." Thanks to Mr. Dante Fontana for the find!

In deep twilight heat, I am listening to this song. The blues, the trouble blues, it's done come and danced with me, yes. My blood gulps and swallow from all the evil ways we find to hurt one another. The beauty and horror of its endlessness. Trouble is all in the world I see... Goddamn right. This is the kind of pain that marks you, steals something from you and doesn't give it back, changes that indelible thing inside you that language hasn't even created words for yet. But that whiskey voice, those notes born of [...]

Easter is coming, so it seems righteous to post the first in a series of great Christian music that, I hope, will lift the spirits of the believer, and make those who don't believe wish they would, if even for the duration of a song. This mix comprises gospel, soul, blues, funk and country, stretching from the late 1920s to the early 1970s. Some of the featured artists will be better known in other genres, some of them got their start in gospel music. Among them is Sly Stone , who as Sylvester Stewart was a child [...]

In a few months the world (at least, that part of the world which still listens to real music) will turn its ears toward Austin, Texas, for the annual mecca of indie/alt/punk/experimental/fo lk/whatever acts called South by Southwest. We love Austin and all, but that's not why we're here today. No, we want to talk a bit about our hometown - Houston. Contrary to popular impression, Houston's actually a rockin' place. It's a BIG rockin' place. Yes, Houston is one of the biggest cities in the country and we do have all of the good and bad stuff that [...]

A warm welcome to the first edition of Wild Weekend in the year 2011. What´s cooking, doc? Got some rather obscure stuff for you this week, with nyabinghi drums and sitars no less. But there´s also a sizzling Ike Turner party hit featuring Lonnie ´The Cat´, and a steaming jazz duel between two undisputed sax greats. What more could you possibly want? Check ´em all out and for chrissakes... have a wild one. But first there´s Lightnin´ Hopkins, wishing you all a very happy new year. Lightnin´ (1912-1982) [...]

Rain? In January? In Canada? Oh man, I am feeling extra lazy/basic today, so I am just going to post the same thing I posted last Dec. 31. I'm going to get drunk and see The Sadies tonight! Whoo-Hooo! Have a great night people! And thanks so much for indulging my vanity and reading my blog! Todd Snider - Happy New Year/All That Matters.mp3 From : Live [...]

Last night, while aimlessly flipping through TV channels, I stumbled upon a Fox News Channel commentator bitching about President Obama vacationing with his family in Hawaii for the holidays. Now on Fox they're always bitching about Obama, but I thought: "The dude can take a holiday vacation with his family. I'm taking a holiday vacation, even if it's only one day. You should take one too, Mr. Fox News Channel." Then I realized, that was the first time in about two weeks of this holiday season that I had even given a passing thought to President Obama. Or [...]

We're havin' a party ... in our room. Today we reached the milestone of one million readers, since we started this blog in March 2008. We have been lucky to get around 1,000 or so readers a day since then, but there's been quite a flood of readers the past few days ... we owe it to Sweet Sweet Connie and Howard Stern. She was on Stern's show Wednesday, and the resulting interest pushed us up the last 20,000 readers in just two days. We really appreciate your reading [...]

Lightnin' Hopkins and his official marker from the State of Texas Two of Texas' greatest musical legends have received permanent markers in their respective home towns, signs that share their legends with visitors. Bluesman Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins received an official Texas State Historical marker in Houston's Third Ward, while legendary rock and roller Doug Sahm got a permanent marker atop the hill named after him in Austin. The colorful marker now atop Doug Sahm Hill Hopkins, who died in 1982, is only [...]

photography by purpleplaid Baby Please Don't Go is a song that was originally recorded by Big Joe Williams (what a voice man!) way back in 1935. I've heard various versions before (oddly not the mainstream ones) and thought it would be great to share some of them. These are just the covers that I think are cool either because I like the sound of it or because of the unique take on it. I've also tried to keep it in order of release (more or less). I have about 3 [...]
