Everyone has a pick-me-up playlist for when they encounter one of those god-awful days. I'm talking about rain, Visa bills, and every single person who you pass by giving you the stink eye. My pick-me-up playlist features Little Joy, a Brazilian/American trio comprised of Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes , Rodrigo Amarante of Los Hermanos , and Binki Shapiro. They haven't released any new material since their 2008 self-titled album debut, which is a damn shame, but it's something I've always been able to revisit time and again. Their music is warm and inviting and contains [...]
Black Partridge comprises two brothers from Illinois. The duo have a unique sound that fuses lo-fi rock and pop with caressing sentiments of shoegaze and dream-pop. The older brother, Vito, plays the bass guitar while Mick takes over vocals and guitar. While the pair has yet to release an album, they have four songs available [...]
Today is our tenth wedding anniversary. Ten years! A few things have happened since then: moved from Arizona to New York to start our life together. Found great jobs and great friends while we were there. Jill schooled me on classic films. We lived in a giant empty loft in an industrial building in Williamsburg with little more than a mattress and two incredibly uncomfortable kitchen chairs. We moved to another part of Brooklyn and had a super named Ralph who'd say things like "Yous Guys." I tried to write a novel. We went to Paris in 2004--Jill's first time [...]

Sorry for the slack lately. Been pretty busy with this and that. Here are eight songs that I have been listening to over the past week or so. Enjoy. 1. Youth Lagoon - July 2. Social Climbers - Chicken 80 3. Oregon Bike Trails - Cayucas 4. Young Man - Tired Eyes [...]

I'd never heard of The Dead Trees until a few days ago, but as soon as I heard this, I couldn't help but listen to the entire thing a few consecutive times. It's a charming, catchy sort of "fuck you" song, [...]
The once saviors of rock will keep making records, whether you like it or not. Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
Regular readers know this by now: the aim of Obscure Sound is to expose quality artists that, for whatever reason, have yet to achieve substantial recognition despite their excellent material and prevalent talent. I like to believe the music blogosphere has a profoundly positive effect on a music industry currently plagued by a money-first ideology [...]
We all had to wait what seemed like a very long 5 years without new music from The Strokes as a whole. Sure, Julian put out a solo album (which was quite good), as did Nikolai and Albert, Fab did his thing with Little Joy, and Nick worked with Devendra Banhart and Sia, but it [...]

My Disco will be doing their one and only tour for the year. That means we won't see the boys again until 2012, so get down and see them this April cause you'll be waiting a while to see them again. For those in Melbourne, My Disco will be at The Toff for two nights of fun so there is no excuse. They will also be celebrating the release of the double deluxe version of ' Little Joy '. Dates: 1/4 - Good God Small Club (Sydney) [...]
Hey look, it's another post-punk revival band! You know, the whole time I was sitting through this record, I thought, "They'd be a lot better with Steve Albini at the boards." After all, they're named after a Big Black song. Then I found out their previous album, Paradise, was, in fact, produced by Albini -- and now, for some reason, they've decided to go with Silverchair's producer. Well, then. Little Joy is another musical paradox for me. This type of deliberately paced,...

Valentine's day is a test for those of us who are both cynics and romantics. The cynic in us wants nothing to do with the day, knowing that it's a purely commercial holiday that so many folks feel forced into celebrating. But the romantic in us loves it: it's a day when you get free rein to be mushy and be public and unabashed about your love. Guess which side I'm taking here? Yeah, I'm knee-deep in love these days. My wedding was just a few weeks ago, and my new wife Katie and I have been so [...]

Instead of coming across like decorating a Christmas tree in July, the summer-friendly pop of Tennis is a refreshing and apt reminder of anticipatory feelings that would usually take months to arrive from January. Tennis are one of 2011's most buzzed-about bands thus far thanks to the eclectic qualities of this husband-wife duo. Their debut, Cape Dory, lives up to expectations.

God knows how much I miss The Strokes. Rumor has it (via Twitter) that the band finished the album today, but we've heard that a few times before. Thus in the meantime I will continue to look for a band that satisfies the duality of coolness and catchiness that Julian and co. provided for sometime in my musical life. The Dead Trees, acting as the backing band for Little Joy, definitely perked up my ears with the undeniably toe-tapping tune "Back To L.A.". The drums are simple and tight, the guitars go from bouncy to driving, [...]

Little Joy is formed by Binki Shapiro , Rodrigo Amarante and Fabrizio Moretti , three friends who dropped their routine at their respective hometowns to make a record in Los Angeles, California in 2007 and every since they been giving the world beautiful music. Enjoy

Little Joy's debut (and only album to date) is nothing less than charming. Since it's release it remains an album I fall in love with every time I re-listen. It is an album that allows simplicity to shine through, only bolstered by Noah Georgeson's production, light guitars, and soothing vocals of Binki and Rodrigo. "Fiya" a song by tUnE yArDs is a song that could easily find a home on Little Joy's debut. It is a sweet simple song with a charming melody and a nice build up throughout its entirety. For some reason it's [...]

This year marks the most fun I've had yet putting together twenty songs to soundtrack your summer. The mix came together organically and joyfully while I did summery things, and the contentment I feel lately in these weeks is embedded in the picks. I declared on January 1 (when I did the Polar Bear Plunge ) that 2010 was going to be a flippin' fantastic year, full of new experiences - and it certainly is living up to the promise. Enjoy these as I have, play them at the BBQs to come, and burn them on CD [...]
