Derek Branscombe '70s-styled radio rock - the sort marked by tight multi-part harmonies, guitars that go from chunky rhythms to smooth leads like the peanut butter aisle, and a laid back sort of pop songcraft that's inviting like a pitcher of beer on a hot Summer's day - has been back in style lately, and no one's done a better job of repping it locally than Zeus . Their 2010 debut Say Us won them plenty of fans both across Canada and abroad. Somehow amidst all the touring [...]

While Little Scream's sprawling "Boatman" certainly stood out on their debut LP , The Golden Record , I'd yet to find a version to share online that does justice to live takes witnessed at our own SXSW day party and others last year. Now Laurel Sprengelmeyer has gotten the full troupe together for an excellent kitchen-sink attempt in a bare space big enough to capture the energy of this epic piece. What's more, the album's producer, Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire, joined in as the guest drummer along with a full choir. There's a melting pot of [...]
Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive Courtesy of Secretly Canadian Clavicyclette. Say it three times fast if you can. Most folks might get a little tongue tied but Montreal singer and multi-instrumentalist Little Scream has it down pat after using the fantastical piano-bicycle in her new video for 'Boatman (Live With The Clavicyclette).' "My friend Ian had come across the clavicyclette, made by a great piano man in Montreal named Spike [...]

Killbeat If we were to spool up the Wayback Machine to November 2006 , you'd find a post where I confessed that sending me a lovely slab of vinyl was a pretty good way to get to the top of my "to listen to" pile... something that apparently still holds true over a half decade later. But as I pointed out even way back then, a listen is not the same as a writeup so I find it comforting to know that Camp Radio still has the goods to impress in whatever format they're [...]
I fell in love with Little Scream after I saw her open for Sharon Van Etten in San Diego. The Golden Record affirmed that initial infatuation and I've grown to deeply love that record over the last year. So when I saw this interview with her for L Magazine I was excited to find that she's authentic and has overcome a lot. She's a powerful woman who works outside of the limitations of what a song could be and for that, I'm a fan. Check out some more videos here .

Working in music the last few years, I've had the chance to collaborate with really incredible people behind the scenes: filmmakers, engineers, graphic designers, writers - those individual's whose art it is to facilitate art. I've often wondered how they got to where they were. I had the opportunity to sit down with La Blogotheque filmmaker Derrick Belcham before he sets off en route to make a La Blogotheque HQ in New York. We met in a Toronto diner to discuss how he got to be where he's at, what Jeff Tweedy smelled like up close [...]

Here is my list of the songs I liked best in 2011, which will be the last one we offer here. I only adhered to three rules with this list, really: 1. The song had to be officially released in 2011, 2. I could only select one song for any artist, and 3. The list [...]

It's that time of the year again and we've procrastinated till the last minute, but have no fear we've put together a list of our favorite 50 albums of 2011. This list reflects all of the Vagabonds that contribute throughout the year. We do our best to put it in to some sort of numerical order, but in the end all that matters is that we get to look back and recognize the music that has been soundtrack to our lives all year long. Below are our picks for numbers 50-40 we'll have another ten for you [...]

Stay tuned for our songs lists in the days to come! #10 Youth Lagoons - Year of Hibernation (Fat Possum) In a recent interview I read with Trevor Powers, Youth Lagoon's brainchild, he described how he suffered terrible anxiety-an anxiety that led him [...]

Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that defined 2011 for us, presented in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, there's only one song per artist. Click the links next to the track to download / listen to the song and go to our Spotify Playlist to hear them all. Enjoy y'all! 50. Austra - Beat and the Pulse MP3 [...]
BEST OF 2011 : Songs | Albums (soon) | EPs/Singles | Discoveries/Heavy Rotation | Photos A really good year! The first 40 or so are mega-jams and the latter 38 (Rawkblog loves you, baby) are still jams. I purposefully left out songs by Destroyer because I couldn't decide, so consider Kaputt represented. You can play the entire page with the handy Ex.fm player in the bottom right corner, stream the playlist on Spotify and Rdio , and download everything after the jump. [...]

Love the grungy guitar and the way this song loops around and around. + it's so topical following yesterday's Myth Buster's mishap . Little Scream - "Cannons" — Basil
Listen to new Christmas covers by the Civil Wars, David Bazan, Woods, Little Scream, the Bandana Splits, Saskatchewan, Coming Soon, and Aidan Moffat!
2011 was (another) odd year for music. It felt like the average quality of albums was raised a bit, but nothing really stood out as a life-changing album or single of the year. Still, there was a lot of great music to be heard. Here's fifty of my favorite tracks from the year, ranging from [...]

On a stage adorned with Christmas lights, Little Scream brought an unexpectedly raucous live show. I mean, really, who expects a band with a flute player to be rock 'n roll? Normally, I try to clear all expectations of a band before I go and see them live. But in this case, after listening to and enjoying their album a few times, I built up a few assumptions. The studio album plays like a soft, elegant soundtrack to a dream. With songs like "The Lamb" and "Boatman," the melodies and echoes abound. [...]

Photo credit: Benjamin Gallardo The week may not be starting off with a bang, but it certainly looks like the combo of bands hitting the city this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will make up for it. Future Islands , Gauntlet Hair , Jukebox The Ghost , Sondre Lerche , YACHT , the list goes on and on and on. Enjoy it! Devon Williams , Tony Castles , Young Buffalo @ [...]
