I happened to be reading a comparison of the worst holiday seasons based on a number of economic factors since the Great Depression and, according to this study, 1982 was the bleakest Christmas of the past eighty years. At the time, I was fourteen and blissfully unaffected by unemployment rates that exceeded those of recent vintage. Our small town was home to the headquarters for two industry-leading corporations. There were six very wealthy families, six poor ones, and everyone else resided solidly in the middle class. (really, there once was a socio-economic stratum called [...]

Steven Van Zandt (born November 22, 1950) is an Italian-American musician, songwriter, arranger, record producer, actor, and radio disc jockey, who frequently goes by the stage names Little Steven or Miami Steve. He is best known as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, in which he plays guitar and mandolin, and as an actor in the television drama The Sopranos (1999-2007), in which he played the character Silvio Dante. Van Zandt also had his own solo band called "Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul" in the 1980s. Read more »

Last week, Little Steven or Steven Van Zandt, as you may know him, of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, The Sopranos , and in this case, SiriusXM's Little Steven's Underground Garage station and show, named Candy Golde's track "Trouble's Coming Down" The Coolest Song in the World on his radio show. So, in other words, the coolest band in the world, whose [...]

One would think that after the shining example of the importance of audio quality and artistic choice that was the Black Eyed Peas' Super Bowl XLV half-time performance, we'd probably need a break from the big cultural events and their onslaught of mostly mediocre musical acts. But alas, the chill of winter has once again affected our brains and we're at the mercy of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. It's hard to understand the appeal of the Grammys once you reach a certain point in your life, the one where you [...]

I nearly wrote an Iron and Wine album announcement yesterday in which I argued we know what we're getting from Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) at this point and you're either a fan or you aren't. Same goes for The Boss. By now we know what he is, even as he periodically changes up his sound or backing players and nominally reinvents himself. Ultimately he's a dedicated Rocker whose unquestioned devotion to craft and performance puts artists half his age to shame. Even if The Promise is an album of 21 previously unreleased tracks we still know what [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Once upon a time, the radio disc jockey was king, a trusted voice floating across the airwaves to bring fresh sounds to eager ears. But the corporate takeover of radio reduced the once proud DJ to a meek voice introducing overplayed tracks between endless beer commercials. The emergence of online and satellite 'radio,' along with public and [...]
It must have been sometime in early 1983 - as I was beginning to traverse a musical terrain beyond Top 40 - that I was increasingly listening to more rock-oriented stations, especially Q95 out of Indianapolis. Q95 played a lot of music that would become the backbone of classic rock stations a decade or so later - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who - but their playlist also was heavy on newer rock acts. As I spent more time with Q95 and other similar album rock outlets, I realized that - as the pop stations had American [...]

Great Little Steven interview on Norwegian TV. Thanks to Backstreets for the tip.

It's Tuesday and here are some twisted turns of phrase from around the ' Splinternet ' (who wudda thunk!) - Little Steven of Underground Garage shows his age in a piece of his top garage rock picks (from Entertainment Weekly ) - Musician Nathan Harden writes about the woes of the music industry and how it's all changed, maaaaaann. "If a band's first album is not a hit, more often than not, that band is dropped from the label. No second chances. Most artists never turn a [...]
I watched the Michael Jackson memorial show on Tuesday and was pleasantly surprised with how well it came off. The tributes were heartfelt and authentic, and the musical performances, for the most part, worked. It did him justice, unlike the disaster that was the B.E.T. Awards the Sunday following his death. Unsurprisingly, the show ended with some of the schmaltz that Michael loved, namely, "We Are The World," a song whose ickiness has grown exponentially for me as I've encountered it over the years. Whether it's the trite and solipsistic lyrics (as Jackson [...]
For more than 35 years, Bruce Springsteen has set a standard of consistent excellence that few other rock and roll artists could ever hope to match. He has written so many great songs, as both a solo artist and with the E Street Band, that it would seem almost impossible to try and rank those classics one against another. And yet one fan was daring enough, or maybe foolhardy enough, to try.

Steven Van Zandt may have had a sweet ass role on The Sopranos and DJd the awesome Underground Garage show, but now he just sounds old and irrelevant. Because he's bitter and wants things to be all 1974 again, Little Steven put up a rant, "A Crisis of Craft," (originally given as a speech at SXSW), on his website. Pretty much, he wants young bands to play more covers because that's how you truly learn how to write songs (??). He also says rock 'n' roll is cursed by the rise of the single and a push [...]
Things I Share: - The Hold Steady played a swell batch of songs new and old at Daytrotter recently - check it out here . - Little Steven Van Zandt (ain't so little no mo) is bringing his fave brand of 60s inflected garage rock to TV - he describes it like this: "It'll be called Underground Garage A Go-Go. A Hullabaloo, Shindig!, Ready Steady Go! kind of thing. With young hosts, young kids, dancing to rock-and-roll on camera. The more rock version of TRL. More like the [...]
