ALBUMS OF THE YEAR #14 LITTLE WINGS - BLACK GRASS The almost-retired pseudonym for label owner, artist and musician Kyle Wilson is Little Wings, who released his first album in four years in February on his own label, RAD Records. 'Come Fall' is a good summation of the kind of sound 'Black Grass' was sold to me for; with a shuffling acoustic rhythm and thick, anguished yet gently elated vocal, polished Devendra Banhart-esque lo-fi recording style and similarly European tinges, I get the impression Kyle Wilson isn't going to stop churning out these simplistic, rural folk [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Bay Area Highlights from 2011 (Podcast #263) We might be biased, but, from this vantage point, 2011 reconfirmed that the Bay Area continues to have the most vibrant music community nationwide. The SF scene cranked out a ton of amazing albums this year, and our final podcast of 2011 highlights twelve great releases from Bay Area artists over the past twelve months. This isn't a "Best of" list per se, but these acts did create some of our favorite music in 2011. We'll be doing more year-in-review coverage over the next few [...]

Our good friends over at High/Low Films put together a beautiful short about Little Wings

Regional Bias 2011 took place Saturday night, and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. All four bands ruled, with the only bittersweet element being the knowledge that Royal Baths' electrified high-point-among-high-points set was their last in SF for the foreseeable future. If you came, thank you for your support! If you missed it, catch up with this photo set from Nicole Browner, Anna Gazdowicz, and Todd Wanerman. Thanks again to everyone involved in RB 2011: To our performers, Little Wings , [...]

Also on the bill is the very talented Sea Of Bees and blog favorites White Cloud . DJs for the event will be Peter Arko (Ears of the Beholder / City Limits Records co-founder) and Kevin Meenan (Epicsauce). The event is a benefit show [...]

HALLOWEEN 2020 by LITTLE WINGS by Gnome Life Records "Halloween 20203 comes from Made It Rain , a new cassette from Little Wings , who is co-headlining our Regional Bias fundraiser/birthday party on August 6th. We're a little over one week away from our annual Regional Bias concert (and our fifth birthday party!), taking place on August 6th at the Verdi Club in San Francisco (7pm, $10-20, tickets on sale now !). Mount Eerie , Little Wings , Key Losers , and Nicholas Krgovich in the Mission last night was one of those shows that could not be entered with any expectations. It was a completely unknown venue (which turned out to be an upcoming free radical K-12 school, Brightworks ), and featured a few completely unpredictable performers - Mount Eerie and Little Wings - both of whom either plan for, or spontaneously provide, the most unpredictable one-off sets. Key Losers features Katy Davidson, a longtime San Franciscan, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone collaborator and core member [...]
Evolutionary changes are supposed to happen over eons, not in a few weeks, so why have my feet begun to web together? Soon enough I'll look like Kevin Cosner in Waterworld. The day is 61° and it is damp from the pouring rain of last night, but I've decided to look on it all with great optimism. Everything got planted yesterday so the rain will help my new herbs and flowers feel more at home. I'm sure they're stretching their roots right now. My grass will stay, and here is that word again, lush. But when the sun does return, [...]

MP3: Little Wings - Sandy Babe I still plan on doing a post on Little Wings ' very, very great new album "Black Grass" that came out a few months back, but seeing as the day is just so goddamned beautiful I'm going to grace you with something else first. "Sandy Babe" was a digital single given away by his imprint Rad Records back in 2009. It always screams summertime to me.
