Last night, the wonderful tour bus commune lovefest that is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros rolled into my neighboring city of Royal Oak for their first trip to the area since that killer show at The Crofoot a few years back. I definitely didn't give their latest album as many listens as their debut which was one of my faves that year, but that didn't mean I wasn't stoked to see them live again so close to home, though at a much bigger venue than last time. Last night, I saw Radiohead for the fourth time. However, considering the first three were at Lollapalooza, Coachella, and from the lawn at Blossom Music Center in Ohio, I've never actually seen any members of Radiohead, up close at least. But that all changed last night in what was perhaps the highlight of my life as an amateur photographer as I got to take pictures right up close of one of my favorite bands in the history of bands. In what could have been the best early summer Thursday night in memory (complete with a day off on Friday), Battles made their long awaited return to Detroit at one of my favorite venues in town, Saint Andrew's Hall. The band said they hadn't been to town since 2005 (which is still up for debate) but regardless, it had been a while. This past weekend was Memorial Day Weekend which, for many of us Detroiters, means the best Detroit weekend of the year, better known as the Movement Electronic Music Festival, formerly known as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (aka DEMF). On this weekend, around 100 of the most well established and up and coming electronic artists take 5 stages all over the geometrically complex Hart Plaza for 3 days of dancing, people watching, and all around awesomeness. On the way to last night's show, I rolled my windows down for approximately 30 seconds and wasn't freezing. Yes, that's right, summer concert season is officially here. In fact, it was just announced today that Beach House, something close to my personal holy grail of bands I wanted to see this year, would be coming to town. If you read this blog or follow me on Twitter , then you know that this year's SBTRKT album is high up on my list of favorite albums of the year, so when I heard he was coming to Bottom Lounge in Chicago, and on a Friday night no less, I knew I had no choice but to make the drive out there. Fall concert season is officially in full swing and with an opening series of shows with Explosions In The Sky, Braids and Beirut followed by Zola Jesus, Dum Dum Girls, Purity Ring, Com Truise and never letting up for a few weeks - the list goes on and on - I can tell already that it's going to be a good one. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Chicago back in 2008. I was at my first Lollapalooza and was faced with the choice between Explosions In The Sky on one end of the park and Brand New on the other end. On Tuesday night, I got to see the lovely Ellie Goulding and the energetic Bag Raiders and take pictures of both of them. I'd been a fan of Bag Raiders, but their music just translated so perfectly to the live setting that I'm now 10x more of a fan than I was before. And Ellie. Oh, Ellie. Ah, day 3, you cruel temptress. This was perhaps the day I'd longed for the most, with Fatboy Slim, Green Velvet, Flying Lotus and Little Dragon all on tap (in addition to so many others). And the fact that after a cool and rainy weekend we were now experiencing upwards of 90 degrees and that I was able to wear a pair of shorts for the first time since Coachella were both cause for great excitement. If you live anywhere near Detroit, it's very likely that, besides signifying the official start of summer, Memorial Day weekend means one thing: Movement. The annual electronic music festival, formerly known as DEMF, has been taken over by Paxahau several years ago and they've turned from something that was great to begin with into a real first class production.
