photos by Dave Lichterman East Coast "chill wave" heroes Washed Out stopped by KEXP in October to play a fantastic in-studio to coincide with their show at the Neptune Theatre. Washed Out had a fantastic 2011, releasing the universally acclaimed LP Within and Without and expanding Ernest Greene's laptop project to a full band setting. Greene isn't letting the chill wave tag pigeonhole him by any means. With a full band, Washed Out sounds richer than ever in a live setting and does more justice to the emotional capacity of Greene's songs. [...]

The Kopecky Family Band : six members, five guys one girl, only one actual Kopecky, but all around a tight-knit family of musical talent. Four years ago, Kelsey Kopecky and Gabe Simon teamed up mostly on a lark but soon developed their friendship into a harmonious orchestral folk outfit by adding more friends: Corey Oxendine, Markus Midkiff, Steven Holmes and David Krohn. Last September, the Kopeckys took some time out of touring, playing festivals and generally building their fanbase to perform live the KEXP studio. It's hard to peg down what makes this Kentucky band so special, but if [...]
DJ Craze : Official | Facebook | Twitter - Knocksteady : Official I remember a couple months ago DJ Craze was in town for Expansion and I saw somewhere online that he was doing a video/podcast for Knocksteady. After seeing him live later on that evening at Expansion I totally forgot about the video he did. Low and behold insomnia + the internet + youtube = memory jump. So here's the video + podcast that I was waiting for, but completely blanked out on and forgot to even search/share. [...]
Four Tet : Official | Facebook Four Tet's "Love Cry" is just one of those songs that you can listen to on repeat for almost for ever. For me it was the opening drum pattern and just the swing that make me bob and sway my head that won me over. When the lyrics "Love Cry" drop in you just feel that rush of sonic warmth and you just can't help but smile. I have yet to experience a Four Tet Live or DJ set and am really looking forward to just vibing [...]

Sometimes Seattle gets it wrong. No doubt a lot of great music comes out of this town and the surrounding area, and bands like Fleet Foxes, Nirvana, The Head and the Heart, Band of Horses, Modest Mouse (okay, Issaquah actually) and so many before them have gone on to national acclaim. But when you've got to dig through the import bin to find the latest album by The Walkabouts , well, something's wrong! The veteran band, formed by songwriting duo Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson, has been cranking out stellar albums for nearly 30 years and yet they still [...]

photo by Victoria Holt Fly Moon Royalty has a big year ahead of them in 2012. After getting off the ground last year with their strong "Lemonade" single, they are currently prepping new material and have played much of it at shows around the city. On Saturday, they played at Sea-Tac Airport as a part of the Sea-Tac Aiport Music Initiative that began last week. They have two upcoming dates, including the Dancing on the Valentine show at Crocodile on February 10th and the Little Big Show with Pickwick on February [...]

Over at Paste, they've got a delightful live video of Cheyenne Marie Mize's demanding "It Lingers" from the We Don't Need EP ( review ) recorded at the Butchertown Pub. Mize's sparse instrumentation makes this version sound like a hard hit leftover from the 90s: earthy and bass-heavy. Mize's voice arrives as growl buoyed by the phenomenal three-piece.

photo by Morgen Schuler The Wilderness of Manitoba has been working hard for the past year. Among their numerous 2011 releases were the beautiful and haunting LP When You Left The Fire and an international EP for the lead single off of the album, "Orono Park." "Orono Park" also got a lot of attention last years, as it was featured on a Glamour Kills mixtape and was nominated for the best Daytrotter recording of 2011 (you can listen to their Daytrotter session here ). After briefly celebrating the holidays, the [...]
