Louisville indie-rock trio Workers are back on the scene with their new LP Both Hands , available now from SonaBLAST! Records. With over a decade of experience under their belt, dating back to their days as Your Black Star, this is music from a band that hit its stride long ago and never bothered to look back. In [...]

It's been over two years since their last LP, Burst, but Louisville electro-pop quartet The Pass are finally back with new music, and judging from the sound of it, it's been well worth the wait. Listen for yourself, and just see if you aren't insanely excited for their upcoming sophomore LP Melt within the first twenty seconds. Oh, and you do know they're playing at Zanzabar this Saturday , right? Because I'm guessing you're gonna want to dance to this. The Pass - "Without Warning" [...]

Via Ol Kentuck Records : Ginko is Joan Shelley 's much anticipated 2nd album, and her Ol Kentuck debut. The stellar performances delivered by Joan and her backing band (featuring Ben Sollee , Cheyenne Marie Mize , Daniel Joseph Dorff and several other amazing musicians) mark an artistic turning point and are further testament to the great music coming out of Louisville, Kentucky. (Read Archivist Nathan Salsburg ‘s take on the project right here .) The album ranges from gentle moments of [...]

Everyone is buzzing about this band, and it is clear why. New Albany based Houndmouth has taken Louisville by storm and with the bridge reopened, lets hope to see a lot more of this band. They will be at Uncle Slayton's on February 24 and March 23, and at Headliner's on March 3rd. In the meantime, check out three of their tracks: BIO: Houndmouth is a collaborative folk/rock band from the lowland plains and farmlands of Indiana and Kentucky. Their poetry emphasizes foolhardiness, and their [...]

I personally apologize that I was not the first person on the internet to post this track. Nerves Junior is my new favourite band. Louisville, or anywhere. Having followed them ever since previewing Forecastle 2009, this band continues to grow in more musical terminology than I am qualified to put names to. This quick review of their track Kale could be your typical music review, which means I'll come up with as many adjectives to describe the song as possible. Amazing, outstanding, great, neat, cool, whichever words you normally [...]

Our good friend, Bro. Stephen has had a few hand-made releases, but now in collaboration with Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records and their Laminar Excursion Monthly , he has a new record to share with us. Here's the skinny: The record was record completely live with an all-star band in one afternoon at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN. There are 4 songs clocking in at exactly 20 minutes (the format is a 33 CD). These songs may be a bit different than [...]

Our friend Stanley of You're My Density has been working on a new album for the last 2 years, and it's just about done. The single is an All-American Rejects song ("Damn Girl") and you can see the video below. The album comes out July 27th. TRACK LIST 01 - Damn Girl (All American Rejects cover) 02 - New Year Same Chin [...]

We have been waiting for Louisville's Cabin to put out a new record ever since we fell in love with their last EP ("I Was Here EP"). They announced a new album back in November, but its release was pushed back . Well, wait no longer. Cabin has a new album out now, Among the Rectangles and Changeable Parts (you can pick it up now at ear x-tacy). They have a few of the new songs on their myspace page and a music video for one of [...]

We here at Backseat have not been shy about showing our love for local musician extraordinaire Cheyenne Marie Mize . Her new EP, Before Lately was a " Local Listen " back in March and now we are excited to announce that she has signed with sonaBLAST! Records and will be having a formal CD release show at Glassworks on June 4th (details below). Word from the social networking buzz is that Before Lately may make an appearance on vinyl as well! Regardless of format, we've been waiting for [...]

Cheyenne Marie (Mize) has a new 7 song EP out now, Before Lately , and I must say I've been waiting for this for a long time. We've said it before, she is one of our favorite local artists and possibly the most talented person alive. Everything she touches is amazing and this album is no different. You may have seen her play with Arnett Hollow, Ben Sollee, Bonnie "Prince" Billy or Thomas A. Minor & The Picket Line, but now she takes the stage front and center. All seven songs are original [...]

I've had Louisville's The Commonwealth on my radar for a while now, but it wasn't until a few days ago that I got the chance to listen to their self-released EP, How to Play Pretend . DAMN THIS ALBUM IS GOOD! They claim influence from Yo La Tengo and I couldn't agree more (listen to "Ginger" below). With seven or eight musicians going at the same time in a smooth and clean lounge style, this album is fantastic to throw on at the end of a day or mid-road trip. On songs [...]

Brian Healey, keyboardist for for The Pass and formerly for Paradigm has an EP of his own (released) February 15 on Ropeadope Records ( ropeadope.com ) under his electronic artist/producer alias Brainbheats . C+ Creature Island Prairie Wisdom @ Skull Alley Saturday, February 20, 2010. Doors open at 9 pm $5.00 Here is what I wrote about their most recent album for our Local Listen series: Louisville’s C+ has a new album out, “Learning to Sail My Ship” and it is already creating buzz. The LEO recently [...]

Louisville's C+ has a new album out, "Learning to Sail My Ship" and it is already creating buzz. The LEO recently gave the album a raving review calling the it " the odds-on frontrunner for best Louisville album of the year." I had a chance to listen to it recently and I'll join the bandwagon. C+ has provided Louisville with a local album we can be proud of. I won't call it the best Louisville album of the year, but it's in the top ten and a few of the tracks have [...]

I'm always excited when I get CDs from local bands, but I was particularly excited when I opened a package on Friday with the new album from Thomas A. Minor & The Picket Line . I've seen The Picket Line back Bonnie Billy at Funtown and at the Old Tarr Distillery and I've seen Cheyenne Mize with Bonnie Billy in Bloomington , with Ben Sollee at the NuLu Fest and with Arnett Hollow . I'm kicking myself for missing their CD release show, but as soon as they pop up again, [...]

With often dark and introspective lyrics draped over power chords, The Instruction (a foursome comprised of Blake Sakal, Wes Hawthorne, Jeremy Stein, and Brandon Terrell) have made their mark through relentless and energetic live shows, sharing the stage with everyone from These United States to Thao with the Get Down Stay Down and MC Chris. With their SonaBLAST! Records debut, Failure by Design , the group is ready to move forward into the rest of the world. Hailing from Louisville, KY, home to such enigmatic and diverse musical icons as Slint, [...]
The Deloreans have quickly become one of my favorite local bands. I first heard of them through their track on the last Louisville is For Lovers, "La La Love." As soon as I heard it, I was blown away. Little did I know this was only the tip of the iceberg. I got my hands on their new album, Love Outrageous , and heard what this band is really made of. True to their name, they take you back. Way back. Part 50's sock hop, part 60's British Invasion, part 70's New Wave, all updated to make your [...]

Photo via The Decibel Tolls I just saw Softcheque play at Rock the Whole Lot and was blown away. I can't believe that I haven't heard this band yet, but better late than never. Sotcheque is driven by its two female singers with absolutely enchanting voices and supplemented with a mellow drone of keys and percussion. Immediately, Bat for Lashes came to mind and the similarities are scary. Each combine hypnotizing vocals with a dark and eerie journey sound. Keep on on on this group, they [...]

Idaho, Alaska has been making waves down in Lexington, Kentucky for a few years now and after a number of Louisville performances, their presence heating up here as well. "Manipulate and Multiply" (2009) will only fuel the fire. It's a heavy-hitting barrage of tracks that keeps you on your toes the whole time. It's rough enough to be punk and transitions in and out of mellow pop-rock and metal war cries. Just when you think you have them pegged, they go a different direction. That, for me, is what is most appealing about the album. They can go from [...]
