XXL just put out a mixtape featuring new material from the artists on their Freshman Class of ‘13 list. The one track of note is Angel Haze spitting bars on a mean Purity Ring “Lofticries” sample. The ethereal synths now feel grimacing.

The Halifax/Montreal duo known as Purity Ring have turned a few heads with their debut album Shrines. Take a listen to their newest single 'Loficries' from the album and see its accompanied video. A year ago, two unassuming 20-somethings took the stage at The Barbary for a crowd of maybe fifty people. With a DIY backdrop consisting of a bed sheet and some colored spot lights, Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (production) presented their in-progress project Purity Ring with a youthful vibrancy and hopeful exuberance. While James’ infectious smile was enough to animate the audience into a spirited sway, Roddick’s smart mixing and instrumental flair sent everyone in a dizzying spell.             Purity Ring – the enigmatic epithet ascribed to the post-dubstep electropop audiodream shared by Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (production).  From early 2011, whispers of this dark horse came in the form of the infectious U.F.O. “Ungirthed,” which toppled the indie blogosphere with its experimental flair and schizophrenic sampling, and “Lofticries,” the lyrical anthem of a new generation of late-hipster stoners. Canada is known for loving their strong bier and the sport of hockey. Lately, I have been loving the electronically hip music that they have been sending south of the border through the airwaves. Purity Ring is one of these bands that has been making my ears go fully erect. They are out of Montreal and have been slowly seducing their fans by releasing a single here and there over the past few years.
