Swedish singer/songwriter Emil Svanängen - Loney, Dear - gained some semblance of success when Sub-Pop released his album Loney, Noir in 2007. Although not a mainstream successful, his influences are wide and obvious - especially on his most recent album Hall Music . Svanängen's biggest asset is his use of tempo and space, like if James Blake decided to produce a lo-fi Mumford & Sons . Just like Mumford, the passion is palpable - but it's not as obvious. There's a subdued nature - a quiet yet powerful tool - like Teddy Rosevelt's "speak softly and [...]

Frank Yang It hasn't escaped my notice that my live show schedule so far in 2012 has been pretty lean, and what there has been has been more on the sedate side. Which is fine - I dig the low key stuff and getting home well before midnight - but sometimes you get a fever for something bigger, louder and more rawk... and on those occasions, such as Tuesday night, the perfect prescription is The Kills . The Amer-English duo were on the road for a second North American jaunt in support of last [...]
Loney Dear mastermind Emil Svanagen seems to get a lot of mileage out of his project's name almost sounding like the word "lonely". This was particularly problematic in 2006 when the band's first LP broke into the hearts and minds of listeners with an ear for well-crafted bedroom pop, occasionally mistaking his name in confluence with his sound as "Lonely Dear". On latest promotional single, "

Facebook On paper, London's Big Deal doesn't really bring a lot to the table. Two guitars - one acoustic, one electric - and two voices - one American male, one English female - and that's about it. There's not much in the way of virtuosity in the former and neither Kacey Underwood or Alice Costelloe's vocals would stop anyone in their tracks either alone or in harmony. To hear it described, you'd be forgiven for expecting it to lean towards being rather conventional and/or pedestrian. And yet their debut album [...]

Ladyhawkemusic.com NME has an interview with Pip Brown, aka New Zealand synth-pop star Ladyhawke , who is getting closer and closer to officially following up her super-tasty 2008 self-titled debut . Anxiety is set for a March 20 release and according to Brown, is synth-free and much more guitar-heavy in the style of '90s bands like Blur and Pixies; well, at least she's keeping things retro. There's no preview track or advance single yet - "Black, White and Blue" will be released on February [...]

In Loney Dear's new video, a masked skateboarder skates between stark city scenes set to songwriter Emil Svanängen's slow, orchestral build. Tone-wise, it's a pretty clean match. It's somewhat reminiscent of that series of videos the Roots put out as their release of undun approached, pitting a silent protagonist against an bleak backdrop. #30 Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean [...]
Frank Yang Okay, let's get this over with. More than any year in recent memory, 2011 was tough to distill down to a top ten - not because there was a dearth of notable releases, but because there was a glut of them. Plenty of records this year were good to great - from those you'd expect as much from, those who surprised by upping their game and/or those who you'd simply never heard of before - but head-and-shoulders standouts? More of a chore than I expected. But here are ten [...]

Facebook Almost four years on from their last dispatch, Spiritualized has announced that their seventh studio album Sweet Heart Sweet Light will be released on March 19, 2012. It's about the same gap that separated 20082s Songs In A&E and 20032s Amazing Grace , but that delay was compounded by Jason Pierce's near-death experience. This time any extenuating factors in the delay fell into the more decidedly benign category; new labels in both Europe and America, recitals and reissues to mark the 10th anniversary of [...]

Above all, Hall Music is a study in merging contrasts, an album of impossible pairings. The pacing is simultaneously fast and slow, with gently weaving harmonic structures propelled forward by quickly moving notes. The instrumentation is orchestral and synthesized; organic and invented. A church bell paired effortlessly with horns and an analog keyboard. (...) Drawing from both of the emotional states it joins together - joy and darkness, Hall Music creates its own unique expanse - one you'll surely want to re-visit again and again. [...]

Following on from last week's sold-out (and truly spectacular shows) at London's intimate St Pancras Church, Loney Dear has been named as suppport for The Leisure Society's largest headline show to date. The two acts will appear at the London Barbican theatre on December 8. The Leisure Society will collaborate with the maverick, 30-strong Heritage Orchestra to perform songs from both their albums Into The Murky Water and The Sleeper .

Following his recent string of successful UK shows, Loney Dear has announced he'll be supporting The Leisure Society at the Barbican Hall on December 8th. The Swedish legend will replace Micah P Hinson - who had to pull out due to an arm injury sustained earlier in the year. The show will see The Leisure Society collaborate with the 30-strong Heritage Orchestra to perform songs from both their albums Into The Murky Water and The Sleeper .

It seems as though - at long last - godlike genius Emil Svanängen is finally getting the attention that's been owed to him for the past eight or so years. Having sold out his two night London residency at St Pancras Church, Loney Dear have today announced details of a date at London's Bush Hall on February 10. A true master of his craft, Svanängen consistently crafts the most heartbreaking of songs - with his most recent collection Hall Music being perhaps the standout release of his six album career [...]
Oriel Joans give listeners what they expect from Swedish pop: infectiously light key progressions, trickly acoustics, and gorgeous melodies that evolve from folk-tinged whispers to grandiose hook-filled spectacles. Such is the case with "Chin Up", the Swedish quartet's new single. Stylistically, there's not much separating them from recognizable Swedish pop staples like Loney Dear or
If you fancy sticking two fingers up to the dull winter evenings, a healthy dose of lush Swedish chamber pop might be the ticket. Multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanangen aka Loney, Dear is stopping off in Dublin's Sugar Club tonight as part of his European tour supporting the album Hall Music , released last month. His sixth album, Hall Music was inspired by Svanangen's experience of touring with chamber orchestras in 2009, and he's also revisited his back catalogue to arrange older tracks for performance on a grander scale. Tonight's show starts at 8pm and [...]
