It is of course only my humble opinion but if Americana had to crown a genre King and Queen then surely it would be Brett & Rennie Sparks, my first encounter with their regal music was on the 1998 Uncut compilation CD Sounds of the New West - The Best of Alternative Country - they left an indelible musical imprint with their track Weightless Again along with a number of other contributors to that CD including Hazeldine, Calexico and the late great Vic Chesnutt, The Handsome Family have built a formidable [...]

Great Marble - In the Air Rolling around, wandering through smoke and mirrors, picking up the pieces. This Toronto outfit has a couple new singles that feel precious and perfect without unveiling the mystery. Dive in. Get this b/w “ What You Need ” on 7” wax from LOOSERecordings. They’re on Tumblr too.

Toronto psych-rock duo Great Marble, the latest addition to Loose Recordings' roster, don't fall into the airy, motionless, eyes-shut-and-zoning side of psychedelia, but land firmly in pop land with beats that won't quit and a quiet energy building. The first track from their upcoming 7", "What You Need", is smooth, slight psych-pop, sensually soothing and strutting – the perfect medicine for a broken nerve or soundtrack for a sweet thing walking. Seduc...

Florida boys Ben Saylor and Peter Kokkinakos, known as the plastic flamingo state's latest surf-garage-grunge duo, Jensen Serf Company, plunge their beachy tunes into basement push-arounds in their new single, "Better Man." "Better Man" starts with a fried, vibrating guitar melting into a slow-motioned surf that suddenly crashes onto shore with a wild fury. Effusing an early Ty Segall roughness and echoed, repeated vocals, "Better Man" sings of trying to...

The album was recorded in Nashville and produced by Andrija Tokic who had a had in the much hyped Alabama Shakes album, Look Out Mama is the bands third / fourth album ( for the explanation ) and is little more polished but [...]

Was this ever destined to be an album of heartbreak – an album filled with the raw emotion of having to cope with love leaving? Sure, White had to endure the devastation of seeing his wife walking out on him – for a younger man – while Where It Hits You was being made. But the title had already been chosen, the songs written (many of which were for his estranged wife), before that happened. And what we’re left with is an album where, more than often, the performance battles against the writing. But instead of destroying [...]

The esteemed Label of the Neapolitan producer Rino Cerrone, made another conquest in the world of dancefloor music, this time with Paride Saraceni & Dema on Loose 019. These italians guys with their projects: "Traffic", "Semafor", "Fotogenic","Bad Loop", already had an incredible success and a great support from many artists such as Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Danilo Vigorito, Paco Osuna and Dubfire .

Given recent events across the UK and particularly in London writing about independent music may be low down the list of many peoples priorities this week, but stating the obvious this is a music blog and although Beat Surrender has no 'Mission Statement ' but part of the blogs 'job' is to promote and support great music - the big players don't need assistance, but Beat Surrender can (I hope) help the independents in some small way, and right now they need some help . One of the labels affected [...]

Dawes second album Nothing is Wrong is out on Loose Records in the UK on August 22nd and I highly recommend you seek it out as it's one of the best albums I've had the pleasure of listening so far this year, from first listen it caused a instant involuntary reaction in my zygomatic major and orbicularis oculi muscles that I couldn't wipe from my face for the duration of the record. The album is a homage to the best of the Laurel Canyon sound but by [...]

Having read the recent 4**** review in Uncut for Celebration Florida I must admit to being put off shelling out to buy a copy of the album, I have the rest of The Felice Brothers recorded output as well as Simone's solo work and that with The Duke and the King , but some of the observations made in Uncut review had me wondering what to expect, then the kind folks at Loose put a copy of the album my way, so I had no excuse not to listen and I must say I [...]

The Felice Brothers return with a trailer load of drum machines, synths, brass and eerie production. Is this a response to the countless Dylan/The Band imitator incriminations endured by the New Yorkers over the last few records? Bowlegs holds its hands up, we were among them. Response or progression, it matters not, because this record, at times, is a band starting anew. Recorded in a disused gymnasium the production has an echoed vibe, creating a moody, slightly muffled atmosphere. The songs switch between a twisted Americana – that has been opened up and installed with an electronic engine [...]

Hurray for the Riff Raff are a new signing for Loose Music and the labels quality control has scored another bulls-eye with the release of the self titled album from the New Orleans based Americana trio, now I know that the term Americana gets thrown around a lot and it appears in some media to be getting diluted downward to a more polished and commercial product, but this album is the real deal collecting together eleven tracks from the bands two previously self released albums, a perfect introduction if you’ve not come across the band before. Front [...]

News on the upcoming album along with a couple of tasters for you, I have the album and recommend you look out for it on release, it's a choice offering of Americana. New Orleans' Hurray For The Riff Raff release their debut album in the UK on March 21st, to be preceeded by the release of the single Take Me on February 28th. Live dates in Spring including SXSW.
