There are few things I love more in life than I do demos and acoustic performances. They offer a rare glimpse into the origins of a song- the unfiltered, driving ideas behind them, unconcerned with huge arrangements or matters of production. Kicking off the thirteenth annual River Rocks festival on Pier 54 here in New York City last night, Tune-Yards and spacey, ghostly Austra played to a few-thousand-attendee-strong crowd as the sun set. Katie Stelmanis sure knows how to pick 'em. On her solo LP, she included a stunning cover of Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman," and last week Stelmanis and the rest of Austra released their cover of Roy Orbison’s "Crying," updating the classic tune with fleeting string arrangements and Stelmanis' signature cut-glass vocals.
