Lyle Lovett: Songs for the Season

Lyle Lovett: Songs for the Season A three-song holiday treat from Lyle Lovett This three-song EP from Lyle Lovett includes jazzy covers of Vince Guaraldi's "Christmastime is Here" and Frank Loesser's "Baby, It's Cold Outside," with vocalist Kat Edmonson serving as harmonist and foil. There's also a sly new original, "The Girl with the Holiday Smile." The latter is slated to reappear on Lovett's next album, but the cool yuletide covers are only available here. Honeyhoney - Billy Jack

Honeyhoney - Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe may call L.A. home, but the indie roots music, gritty alt-country fervor and Laurel Canyon folk/pop of their excellent sophomore album sound like they may be equally at home in the clubs of Nashville or Austin...70's California country/rock a la Buffalo Springfield and Gram Parsons gets dusted off for a hip reworking...Raymond Richards (Local Natives) produced // Release : Billy Jack (October 24, Lost Highway) // Sounds like : Retro-hued Americana with a modern, ballsy alt-pop irreverence...nothing shy or plaintive here as the mostly acoustic backdrop of [...]

mp3: bummer high – (from lost highway ep)

mp3: bummer high – (from lost highway ep) Our new favorite garage punks from Vancouver, Bummer High , who you may remember me mentioning before , have put out their second cassette, Lost Highway EP, via the impossibly cool Green Burrito Records . I've been pretty enraptured with their wholly tumbleweed-rockin' garage-old school blues psych jams. Not many bands can pull off a barrage of buzzwords like that, but Bummer High are blessed with a deft hand at keeping the reference points exciting but interpreting them in a fresh way. Grab [...]

Listen: Honeyhoney - "Turn That Finger Around"

Down By The River - Music by HoneyHoney.
"Turn That Finger Around" from L.A. duo Honeyhoney pretty much had us at the hello of the first 12 bars, even before a word had been sung or the track had really dug in. Call it intuition, but we sort of felt that something great was coming. We were right. Taken from their upcoming sophomore full length Billy Jack (an unfortunate title for anyone who's been subjected to the 70's cheese platter movie of the same name), "Finger" both shimmies and shimmers [...]

Ryan Adams Emerges from Self-Imposed Exile, Looks Around Suspiciously, Announces Stuff

Ryan Adams Emerges from Self-Imposed Exile, Looks Around Suspiciously, Announces Stuff We're just past the Ides of March and although he has historically exclaimed "Et Tu, Internets?" this month has brought us a bunch of new Ryan Adams news. The last time we heard from our hero, he had fired up his PaxAm imprint and released two albums that had been hiding in his archives- his Metal Space Opera Orion and Cardinals III/IV which was two albums worth of Easy Tiger -Era recordings with The Cardinals. To accomplish his desired DIY apprach, he assembled a staff to handle the shipping [...]

Lost Highway set to reissue Ryan Adams' Love Is Hell, Whiskeytown's Pneumonia

It's hard to believe, but Lost Highway Records is only ten years old. It's amazing because the Nashville-based imprint (which is a subdivision of Universal Music Nashville) has released so many great albums in the last decade. In celebration of their anniversary, the label is re-releasing a pair of its most important records on clear vinyl every month until 2012. They started last month with the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack and Ryan Adams' Gold , but our friends at [...]

Lost Highway Releasing Ryan Adams' Love Is Hell, Whiskeytown's Pneumonia on Vinyl

Lost Highway Releasing Ryan Adams' Love Is Hell, Whiskeytown's Pneumonia on Vinyl Given Ryan Adams' affinity for releasing music on vinyl, you might think that all the popular albums from his discography are readily available in the superior analog format, but there are actually a few that are rather hard (or impossible) to come by. Enter Lost Highway's 10th Anniversary clear vinyl celebration, in which Adams' former label will release a slew of LPs "that helped define [their] little label" in coming months, including Adams' 2004 LP Love Is Hell , which was released as a double-10-inch (though rare copies only occasionally pop up on eBay), and Whiskeytown's 2001 [...]

Vinyl Flashback – This Mortal Coil 'It'll End In Tears'

This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren (loud vers.)
It'll End In Tears, the 1984 masterpiece by original post-punk super group This Mortal Coil stands as the staple of 4AD Records. Founder of 4AD, Ivo Watts-Russell along with John Fryer were the only two consistent members of the group. All other contributers would go on to later record their own records on 4AD under different [...]

Songs To Learn And Sing – Video Villain – Fearless

Songs To Learn And Sing – Video Villain – Fearless 'Fearless' By Villain. Video Villain, rose from the smouldering ashes of electro art popsters Dead Disco producing skewed sci-fi Goth-pop electronica influenced by everybody from David Lynch to Trent Reznor to futuristic B-movies such The Demon Seed . We interviewed Marie and Lucy back in 2009, ( HERE ) and at last almost two years on the debut single 'Fearless' , is to be released for download on February 21st . Hurrah. There's a video to accompany the single which [...]

Lucinda Williams - Blessed

Blessed is in many ways the quintessential Lucinda Williams album. Arriving March 1 via Lost Highway, the follow up to her '08 album Little Honey brings her acclaimed songwriting skills to a new level of emotional resonance while digging deeper into the gritty alt-country that she has helped pioneer. Blessed , Williams says, is not only the title of her tenth studio album, it's also the theme. Introspection on life and love and thoughtful remembrances permeate the album, most notably on the two that deal with loss: "Copenhagen", penned for her late, longtime manager [...]

Daily Track: Lucinda Williams - "Kiss Like Your Kiss"

We were happy to see that "Kiss Like Your Kiss", a lovely slowdancing waltz of a ballad featuring Elvis Costello, will grace Lucinda Williams ' forthcoming album Blessed (March 1, Lost Highway). The track, which has been nominated for a Grammy , originally appeared on Volume 2 of the soundtrack to HBO's vampire soap True Blood . [...]

Ryan Bingham - Junky Star

Of all the pleasures derived from the excellent film Crazy Heart , perhaps the most unexpected was Ryan Bingham' s Oscar-winning song "The Weary Kind". Co-written with the soundtrack's producer -- the legendary T-Bone Burnett of Raising Sand and O Brother fame -- the song became the sound and the centerpiece of the movie, a gruff, scruffy but tender-hearted ballad of simple folksy elegance with Bingham's bourbon-soaked, nicotine-stained voice providing just the right amount of gravelly weight. With the song's success, Bingham rightfully found a new slew of fans drawn [...]

Stream: Ryan Bingham – "Depression" & "Hallelujah"

Stream: Ryan Bingham – "Depression" & "Hallelujah" Earlier this year Ryan Bingham received both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for the song "The Weary Kind" (co-written with T-Bone Burnett) from the motion picture Crazy Heart (starring Jeff Bridges, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall and Maggie Gyllenhaal). Now the 29-year old americana singer/songwriter have announced the release of his third record, entitled Junky Star , which will be released on September 7 through Lost Highway Records. The record will contain twelve songs, all written by Bingham and performed by him and his backing band The Dead Horses, and two of the tracks, "Depression" and [...]

Richard Currey: Lost Highway

Richard Currey: Lost Highway Lost Highway by Richard Currey is one of the best novels I have ever read, and I've read more books than I can remember. I highly recommend it to fans of Crazy Heart . Lost Highway 's protagonist Sapper Reeves may be a tad more sentimental and genteel than old Bad Blake, but he's every bit as authentic and enthralling. And Richard Currey's prose is refreshingly eloquent without detracting from the simplistic nature of this country musician's story or its rustic Appalachian setting. [...]

Upon Further Review : The Jayhawks – s/t (aka The Bunkhouse Album)

Upon Further Review : The Jayhawks – s/t (aka The Bunkhouse Album) A few weeks ago, a particularly fanatical Twin Cities sect was gripped by an epidemic of joy. The Jayhawks (circa '95) announced three June shows at First Avenue. Of course, this wasn't a total shock. By all accounts, Marc Olson's split from the group was amiable, and recent years had seen Olson and partner Gary Louris regularly performing, and even recording (2009's Ready For The Flood ) together. A mysterious one-off [...]

(Free Download) Ryan Adams is Back in Black With Metal Album as Orion

(Free Download) Ryan Adams is Back in Black With Metal Album as Orion On Friday, March 12th, the long dormant Twitter account for Ryan Adams passed along this missive: We're going to begin pressing ORION - my most legit METAL record - on vinyl next week. http://ryanada.ms At his website over the weekend, he debuted a song called "Electrosnake" from his upcoming album Orion . This song is still available for free download (as a WAV file!). There was also a survey that was shut down yesterday asking whether respondants would buy this album. [...]
