MP3 Rodan: Darjeeling Fifteen Quiet Years out 06/11/2013 After being hidden away for the last several years, Fifteen Quiet Years - all the important Rodan recordings that fans of Rusty have long wished they could unearth! - will be released on June 11th via Quarterstick Records. A celebratory document four years in the making, the collection includes the 1994 BBC Peel session, together with all of Rodan's long-out-of-print 73s and compilation tracks. Despite the brief time span of their existence [...]

Great Floods is on a mission to keep Louisville loud and I'd have to quote the great GW Bush in saying, "mission accomplished"! This three-piece, fronted by guitarist/vocalist Nick Smith, features Jamie Dailey on bass and Matthew McCutcheon on drums. I saw their debut show back in October, when they were trying out a foursome format, and I was blown away by how awesome they sounded. Hearing the difference between that first incarnation and this brutally raw power trio is also incredible. Smith's screamed vocals cover an impressive range from low and guttural to high, terrifying shrieks. These two [...]

Mercurial multimedia artist Roberto Lange perpetually keeps his spear sharp with interesting collaborations - from the much loved Prefuse 73 project Savath y Savalas to last year's underrated OMBRE with Julianna Barwick. For his solo work, Lange truly couldn't have picked a better title - Helado Negro , directly translated from Spanish as "black ice cream." To wit, Helado Negro's radiant sonic chill conduit is pretty doggone prefect for balmy summer nights. Heavy shades of classic tropicalia, West Coast psychedelia, and analog-based electronica have always floated about Helado Negro's balmy approach to subdued [...]

"Who's Your Muse?" alum and Mixtape Muse favorite Cheyenne Marie Mize is set to release her sophomore album, Among the Grey , the follow-up to 2010's Before Lately . Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird) co-produced the record with Mize on the grounds of a church Mize's base of Louisville. It's the first release of new music since last year's most excellent We Don't Need EP and will be released through Yep Roc on June 25th. Paste Magazine premiered the album's title track yesterday. Hear it below. [...]

FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE. Louisville's art/noise/punk outfit, Madame Machine has joined forces with fellow Derby City "maximalists", Twenty First Century Fox to release a split 7-inch EP ( available on wax including free instant download, or just digital download, here ). A fun fact about TFCF is that they originally formed as a B-522s tribute band, Mock Lobster, which reigned from 2008-2011. Whatever your feelings about the B-522s ( hint: you know you love them ), you will shake your funky rump to TFCF . Madame Machine is full of driving [...]

Shabazz Palaces are spellbinding in a small room. I caught them in 2011 at the Pitchfork Music Festival, where they une-fucking-quivocally put on a better show than Odd Future playing the larger stage. While a larger stage belongs to Shabazz in theory, the intimacy a 250 person capacity room like Zanzabar provides did better justice to their nuanced sound. Ishmael Butler and Palaceer Lazaro took advantage of the confined space to breathe extra life into their sonic space. Shabazz Palaces were purely psychedelic - letting space pings and tape echo wash over the sold out crowd, while amazingly rearranging [...]

According to the good doctors of Nerves Junior , this EP is primarily a thirst-quencher for bigger and badder things coming in the pipeline. But it's no placeholder, Craters is a fantastic three-song document of a newly reformed band slowly sculpting their own supersonic pop. "Goodnight Nobody" is the standout for me, but all of 'em are bangers. It's out today, and you can stream it below. If you like what you hear, consider buying the high-quality MP3 download from Bandcamp and help get these guys down to SXSW! And if you're in [...]

I've never written a show review before, but after last night's experience I felt compelled to drop this knowledge bomb on y'all. Neighbor and Anwar Sadat are really, really, really awesome . If you don't feel like reading all this, then just know the take-away point from last night is that these are bands that people who think they don't like "heavy music" will love seeing live. This show, a veritable one-two punch of Louisville power trios, kicked off with Anwar Sadat blistering through one of the [...]

The first Saturday in March, Tame Impala is coming and I think all my friends are going to that and I can't stop yawning at the thought. So I was bumming pretty bad thinking about sitting around at home and eating Go-Gurt and watching Hey Dude on Netflix until lo the angels of Cropped Out and The Other Side of Life came upon me, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them when they emailed "yo we got Matmos rollin' through." Cool, done. I don't think I have to introduce Matmos to [...]

Between the release of their lauded 2011 debut As Bright As Your Night Light and their latest 3-song EP, Nerves Junior underwent major corporate restructuring. Such a tumultuous turnover could spell creative or pragmatic disaster to a less urgently determined outfit. Nerves Junior reinvented; switching rolls, adding new members, and to wit, new dynamics to an already adventurous brutal sonic entity. "Goodnight Nodody," from the forthcoming Craters , offers up the most propulsive and, truth be told, gorgeous songwriting in their toychest yet. Shimmering guitar and boyant vocals make full and tasteful use of the [...]
![[Photos] Father John Misty and Magic Stick – Headliners, Louisville – 1.9.13](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4724576_lg.jpg)
Photo credit Lana Lea My first show of 2013 was a mighty unusual one for me, since the project that originally launched J. Tillman into the spotlight, Fleet Foxes, was always a real bummer to my ears (a minority opinion, I know). Way, way too fair trade organic coffeeshop core for my taste. Yet Tillman's Father John Misty is different - a more diverse, edgy, and often lush take on rustic electric folk standards, with a badass, drug-takin', God-witness' persona. And live, he's all showman - mic stand swinging, boogie fits [...]

When I first caught Milwaukkee on Amtrac's remix, I thought they were some act associate with Bon Iver & that Midwest folk scene. Not only are they not from around there (or even this country), but they're on a blog's label I frequent, LessThan3 . Both Amtrac's remix & the original 'Alone' take what sounds like Ellie Goulding's voice and mixes her in two separate ways. The original went for a more uptempo, disco vibe, where Amtrac went with some hybrid of hypnotic soul. Either way you like it, both succeed separately (though Amtrac [...]
