Filed under: News , New Music When 15-year-old Killian Mansfield decided to record his debut album last year, it had to be the best he could ever do. He knew there wasn't another shot at it, no follow-up to refine any novice slips or incomplete artistic visions. This was his only chance. Within a year, the amateur musician who grew up in New York City and lived in the small village of West Shokan, 20 minutes north of Woodstock, NY, passed away after five years of battling a rare form of cancer called synovial [...]
I always liked the line, " You and me, we're gabbing away..." MP3 File yousendit

In a bit of a rush to get this done. Haven't been too productive on the music hunting front this past week so I'll dish out some of the stuff that's been in the reserves pile for quite a while. Commence laziness! You may recognise this Bunny Sigler tune from In Flagranti's A Decade Of Hero Worship, or you may recognise it simply as an awesome classic disco tune. A lengthy party party jam, stacks and loads and piles of fun. Great album, too. Bunny Sigler - Let Me Party With You (Party Party [...]
Tucked into yesterday's post you might have noticed a little announcement: the pgwp household is expanding. Starting in late January my listening hours are going to shift from krautrock to Kidz Bop. So if you're keeping score at home, that means I need to finish writing a book (including, hopefully, a trip to Louisville), move into a new place, and otherwise prepare for a kid, all in the next six months or so (oh yeah, and work that pesky full-time job). Stressed? Me? Nah... Well, seriously, okay, a little. But more so I'm just [...]

Photography by Tsuru Man on man, Baby, the family, and I had a BLAST yesterday at Zoombezi Bay water park! It's not most the biggest or the best thing in the world, but water slides and family make for good times no matter what! But, it's funny, as you can read by the title, we are presenting a summer themed mixtape today, a mixtape compiled by the best music community ever, i.e. Our Society , but man, the weather today and yesterday [...]

Harry and the Potters - Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock! The Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe in Magic?

I know, I know - fifty eight degrees ain't exactly what you'd call cold, but it's July : that's usually in the Summer, no?; and waking up to sub-sixty, simply doesn't seem seasonal, so neither is this ♫ I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm - Billie Holiday Mmm, if only... ---- Fortunately, as the morning's moved along, the sun did put in an appearance, and it's way less chilly now - still a grey old day, but is that so unusual in England? ♫ Nite [...]
Filed under: The Hit List The summer of 2000 belonged to ' Thong Song ' and ' Who Let the Dogs Out .' The dog days of 1997 would have been unrecognizable without ' MMMBop .' But the truly timeless songs of summer are the ones written about the season itself. These all-time summer hits are hotter than black vinyl car seats in Arizona and more fun than running through the sprinkler. 10. ' In the Summertime ,' Mungo [...]

"Hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck getting dirty and gritty" Chances are, you've heard those lyrics before. They belong to none other than The Lovin' Spoonful 's 1966 hit, "Summer in the City." The single jumped to #1 on the Billboard charts, and has since gone down in the classic rock history books for its signature keyboard and organ structure. You probably already know that the single was [...]

A few months back, our very own Ryan Dembinsky headed over to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's New York City Annex for a great profile on the relatively new outpost. On May 12 the Annex will debut its second feature exhibit - John Lennon: The New York City Years , which will focus on the former Beatle's time in the Big Apple. According to the press release "the show will feature numerous Lennon artifacts - including items representing his inimitable fashion statements - as well as iconic photographs, legendary instruments, original [...]
I picked up this and a whole lot of amazing 7"'s yesterday at Record Store Day. Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down covering Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind by The Lovin' Spoonful is from her split 7 with The Thermals. This sock puppet video for it was directed by Clyde Petersen and Forrest Baum. Previous: Thao Nguyen & The Get [...]

The Lovin' Spoonful: Darling Be Home Soon It's nice to be back in the fold, as it were—posting alongside many of my favorite bloggers here. I have memories of staying up late into the night with my old college roommates, just trading songs back and forth—"have you heard this?" "you have to hear this!" It's a feeling worth recapturing. I'm looking forward to turning you all on—and being turned on—to new favorite songs.

I love you, I love you, I lo-oooo-ve you! Had I been a teenage boy in the 60s I'd have had posters of Mama Michelle Phillips all over my wall. She was Laurel (Canyon) to Mama Cass's Oliver Hardy, the skinniest, blondest hippy chick in the whole of sun-kissed California and quite possibly the sexiest girl singer ever, although that last point is clearly open to healthy debate. Michelle. On the pool again. The story of The Mamas and The Papas is best told by [...]

One of my favourite Belgian labels as of late, Mindless Boogie brings out music of artists like In Flagranti, Allez Allez, Rubber Room, Prins Thomas etc. i couldn't let this pass unnoticed :) + get a great Allez Allez remix here . Okay, so the requisite best 08 release list is behind us, as well as a rundown of some of my favorite discoveries of the year, plus my post on my most beloved record , personally, this year. Still, none are totally accurate. Lost in the cracks are the more recent albums that don't really fit into either category. In this year's case, that means adding three albums from 2007 that I didn't get to until 2008. Here's my list of my personal favorite albums of the year. (Again, the logic of the ranking gets a little fluid [...]

In 2007 my blind spot interests were fairly monogamous: my love of the Byrds morphed into a fascination with the Laurel Canyon scene, opening basically into a lot of 60s and 70s folk and rock. (Also, Elvis Costello.) That interest continued in 2008, though moving into a more country-rock direction???the Lovin' Spoonful's Anthology , for instance, was on of my favorite records of the year. I didn't listen to it a lot on its own, but nearly every track made its way into one iTunes playlist or another. I need to start picking up their proper full lengths. [...]

The editors at JamsBio don't like to admit it, but every once in a while, we'll stumble onto another music website that really clicks with us - both in terms of taste and emotional impact. We like to think of ourselves as music fans first, not critics, and that's the sensibility we strive for at JamsBio and that we seek in other sites as well. That's why we're so jazzed about Damn Fine Day , a new site that each day profiles a deep album cut that's been overlooked, but deserves a place in everybody's collection. [...]
