Luxury Liners is the new project of former Lower Dens member Carter Tanton. On new track “Valley High”, he gets to show off a more glimmering synth-pop feel that does feel appropriate for world-traveling in your yacht. Integrating a bit of vocal samples along with his own pitch-perfect pristine delivery, this is an incredibly serene experience. The debut LP They’re Flowers will be out April 2nd on Western Vinyl and it’s up for pre-order now .
You'll doubtless already be only too aware of Baltimore's insatiable proclivity for dream-pop – go figure. Or rather, go find a Beach House review devoid of the term dream or any given synonym thereof. Still searching, and indeed I've been scouring both high and low for something to if not shatter the mould entirely, then at to at least reset its shape a touch. And lo and behold, call off the inquisition for right before us we've Celebration – a Maryland sextet again trading in the nebulous and loosely oneiric, [...]
Spacy shoegazers Lower Dens captivated an otherwise aloof audience at the Constellation Room in Santa Ana.
The metamorphosis of Jana Hunter as a performer and lyricist is an expansive one. The Texas born musician has been working for the better part of the last decade, releasing most of it under her own name. While the “freak folk” subgenre was thrown around to categorize her particular type of howl in her earlier releases, it was her penchant for painfully honest lyrics that brought her the most attention. It wasn’t until she relocated to Baltimore and made up the musical collective Lower Dens , where she could [...]
We’re not too sure why these figures in white are there, but regardless, Lower Dens' dark new video for “Propagation” is nothing short of blissful.
Baltimore quartet Arbouretum are set to play Whelan's tonight with supporting act Hush Arbors for what promises to be a great evening of psychedelic rock. Singer-guitarist Dave Heumann answers to the State quizz. Who are you and where are you from? Dave Heumann, from Baltimore, USA Who are your favourite artists from your hometown? [Photos by acidjack] Before coming out for an almost-unheard-of-at- Glasslands three-song encore, frontwoman Jana Hunter of Lower Dens stepped out from behind the keys and mic stand to stand in front of the monitors, among the crowd, and close the main set with the Houston musician Arthur Bates' "Hours". And why the hell not? Though known for being a bit reserved onstage, Hunter has watched her Baltimore-based band be anointed an "It" band in the city that decides such things. She certainly has nothing to be self-conscious about, if she ever did. Not [...]
Lower Dens look to explore the fertile valleys of experimental new wave on their second full length release, Nootropics.

Lower Dens - Nootropics MMM 1/2 A nootropic is an enhancer, a substance that improves mental functions such as cognition, memory, intelligence, and concentration. The second full-length album from Baltimore’s own Lower Dens acts in much the same manner as its namesake, dealing in ebbs and flows of distinct, persuasive textures and moods rather than pop hooks and formulaic predictability. It’s a catalyst for reflection, evocative and chillingly hypnotic at its core. Nootropics [...]
The first insight into the return of Jana Hunter's Lower Dens , Brains, proved a compulsively addictive listen and one that still commands attention today although now we've Propagation that may change somewhat. At least our impression of forthcoming LP Nootropics (alongside other formats, a rather sumptuous-sounding 'limited edition gold colored double LP with black swirl' is expected April 30th via Domino imprint Ribbon Music ) has been gently expanded... With a more memorable swell of a hook to latch onto than its predecessor, it's a typically sulky number from the Baltimore quartet that's awash with [...]

I'm not 100% sure if I've consciously listened to Lower Dens before (I've a feeling Liz Pelly may have played a few tracks for me when she interned for State in 2010) but the Baltimore band fronted by Jana Hunter (whose name I recognise from scouring SXSW lineups of years past) are back later this year (April 27th) with a second album Nootropics so now might be a good time to explore. It's that beat to new song 'Brains' that gets me. That and the fact that it flirts with [...]

Lower Dens – “Brains” Jana Hunter of Baltimore band Lower Dens has consistently been releasing some of my favorite music for the past 7 years, from two solo albums ( Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom , and There’s No Home ) to Lower Dens’ 2010 debut LP Twin-Hand Movement and their fantastic 2011 single Batman (one of my favorite songs of 2011 ). Lower Dens have just announced a new record, [...]

Lower Dens , have announced some exciting news today. They have their follow up album to 2010’s Twin-Hand Movement (due out in Spring), as well as a brand new single, entitled “Brains”. This is incredible nighttime music, with a heavy sense of dreamy waves driving in the background throughout. Everything will change. Everything Changes. Do You Believe?

Baltimore's Lower Dens have just offered up a download of their new song. The facebook update also mentions a new forthcoming album. Jana Hunter and company will be playing the Pyramid Scheme on March 7. From NPR: The music of Lower Dens is dark but spacious and hypnotic, with swaths of feedback and echoing guitars. At the heart is Jana Hunter, a Texas-born, Baltimore-based singer and songwriter whose delicate voice haunts every song. Tickets . For an extended preview - watch/listen to the [...]

Photo: Angel Ceballos Despite the fact that they released their debut album, "Twin-Hand Movement", just a mere sixth months ago, Baltimore band Lower Dens, do not seem to be showing any signs of slowing down any time soon. The band will be releasing a new 7” on January 18th on Gnomonsong. The A-Side, "Batman", is a gorgeous little tune that could fit perfectly on "Twin-Hand Movement". It features frontwoman Jana Hunter’s ethereal and beautifully-haunting vocals as well as a slugging bassline and thumping drums. In classic Lower Dens fashion, there is also an extreme amount of [...]

After this post, I'm going to go in hibernation until I finish up compiling Noise Narcs' top ten lists. But Atlas Hunter/Deerhunter's Bradford Cox's top ten list for Pitchfork roused me to a release that passed me by. Baltimore's music scene needs no fresh defense, but the Lower Dens smokey psychrock on Twin-Hand Movement mounts one anyway. A simmering vibe with Jana Hunter's PJ Harvey-esque voice bubbling up from the shoegazing depths. The Italian profanity " alla cazzo di cane ", which literally translates as doing something the "dog's dick" way," [...]
Today sees the kick off of the Lower Dens ' late summer/fall tour with a show tonight at Baltimore's Metro Gallery. The band, originally assembled by Jana Hunter in 2009 in an effort to have a full time crew surrounding her on stage, launches off from her solo work into its own sound, comprised of fuzzy, lo-fi, drone pop tunes. Back in the spring, we got a chance to catch the band performing live at Baltimore's Floristree, as part of an amazing line up that included Double Dagger and Future Islands. The video above gives only [...]
