Review: Laura Marling still soaring high

LAURA Marling is a darling. Everyone loves her - she's the acceptable face of the Mumford & Sons alt-folk juggernaut, she's been nominated for the Mercury Prize twice, won a Brit for Best Female Solo Artist, , won Best Solo Artist at the NME Awards, singer songwriter Beans On Toast even wrote a song about how much he loved her. Luckily, it gives me great pleasure to say the latest LP from Ms Marling, Once I Was An Eagle, is high up there with her best material. And it gives me great pleasure to listen to, too [...]

Single Serving: The Preatures – Is This How You Feel?

Single Serving: The Preatures – Is This How You Feel? I'm definitely digging the groove on this lead single from Sydney, Australia-based The Preatures ' upcoming EP. The band lay out a tumbling, old-school soul vibe while vocalist Isabella Manfredi unfurls a sweet and sultry croon that reminds me a little of Feist at her most upbeat. It's incredibly addicting. Not only that, because they sport two vocalists with very different styles (Manfredi and co-vocalist Gideon Bensen), they can lay claim to a wide range of different vibes. For example, also check out the Bensen-led track "Take A Card" which appeared on their debut EP to get a sense of [...]

Review: CocoRosie cuckoo crazy

SISTERS CocoRosie are harder to pin down than a greased hog on new LP Tales Of A Grass Widow. The globetrotting American siblings have a real European influence to their work - not least in their vocal stylings which sound like a mutant cross between Sinead O'Connor and Bjork, both distinctive and compelling. And their music, well, it's like a bastard cross between freak folk and brooding urban - like the soundtrack to a robot lost in a forest, or a wandering goblin in a metropolis. You get the idea, it's odd. But still it's oddly [...]

Single Serving: Case Studies – This Is Another Life

Single Serving: Case Studies – This Is Another Life Case Studies is the project of Seattle-songwriter Jesse Lortz (also from the band The Dutchess and the Duke). His sophomore LP,  This Is Another Life , is slated for release on June 11th. I haven't heard the whole release yet, but I pre-ordered a copy of the release based solely on the strength of the album's first single "Everything." It's a dusty, bluesy, folk ballad built from a swaying melody cracked together with a bright piano riff, jazzy percussion, and a softly strummed acoustic guitar. It's the perfect sort of tune for spending a little time alone with your thoughts and tackling [...]

Musical Pairings: Jessie Ware – Devotion

Musical Pairings: Jessie Ware – Devotion Until recently I didn't consider myself a fan of pop music. In fact, I'd once believed that pop music was the antithesis of everything I liked about music. In high school I'd have described myself as a fan of "alternative music" which meant I was obsessed with Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Bjork, and Radiohead's The Bends  and  OK Computer (after all, I am a child of the nineties.). Then in college I thought of myself as a fan of "indie music" which meant I was now obsessed with Modest Mouse, Grandaddy, Spoon, and Radiohead's Kid A and [...]

Single Serving: Shark Week – Go West

Single Serving: Shark Week – Go West Our friends at Analog Edition / Everybody Taste are back with a brand new vinyl single from D.C.-based quartet  Shark Week . You may remember these swaggering garage rockers from our October 2012 mix  (their track "Get High" was a highlight). Shark Week's latest offering features a pair of bluesy, sunburnt grooves the four piece recorded in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The a-side "Go West" is a propulsive, side-winding psych-rock track that burnishes sharp, glistening guitar riffs and throaty, snarling vocals. If you're looking for some lively, sun-drenched rock n' roll [...]

The Weeknd - Kiss Land

Enjoy.

Review | Young Hunting ~ Hazel

Review | Young Hunting ~ Hazel Young Hunting | Hazel Words by Lee Adcock If you cringe at the prospect of a summer laden with sunny pop, Young Hunting may be your salvation this year. This five-piece dream team from Los Angeles is set to release their debut LP, Hazel , on Gold Robot Records – and while it may be steeped in California’s flower-power history, Young Hunting cast sepia shades over their lush sound by easing back the tempo and centering in on tragic [...]

Single Serving: Oscar – “Never Told You” & “I Don’t Care”

Single Serving: Oscar – “Never Told You” & “I Don’t Care” If you're looking for a new artist to get excited about, you need look no further than 22-yo London-based Oscar Scheller. He's released only three tracks so far, but they are damn good. "Never Told You" opens with a chugging rhythm (likely pinched from " Paid In Full ") balanced alongside bright, shuffling keys. When they enter, Oscar's vocals, which can alternatively call to mind Morrissey or The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt, take center stage. It makes for a deliciously catchy slice of confessional bedroom pop. Meanwhile, "I Don't Care" relies on a blown-out beat and snarling buzzsaw guitars riffs to form [...]

Single Serving: BoardWalk – I’m To Blame

Single Serving: BoardWalk – I’m To Blame Los Angeles' duo  BoardWalk , Mike Edge and Amber Quintero, started recording music together last summer. The dreamy and ethereal "I'm To Blame" is the first release and calls to mind early releases by Beach House or Tennis. In other words, despite sounding pretty minimalist and DIY in nature, the tune is nonetheless atmospheric and lovingly melodic. Take a listen and let me know what you think. The track is available in a limited-edition flexi from Stones Throw .

Musical Pairings: Junip – Junip

Musical Pairings: Junip – Junip I like the idea of being a risk taker. By it's very nature, it sounds adventurous and exciting. It sounds totally baller. It's the essence of YOLO (and FIDLAR for that matter). But although I like the idea of being a risk taker in theory, I'm not a risk taker in practice. Not a true risk taker. I mean, sure, I'll take calculated risks. And, yeah, I'll bet small stakes. But I'm not not the type of guy to bet the house on nothing more than chance. If I had to guess, based solely on Junip's sophomore album, [...]

Review: April March And Aquaserge? [Insert Gallic shrug here]

APRIL March And Aquaserge's self-titled album is as French as French could be - only it's not. A Gallic bread and butter pop album, you would assume this was music created in a back room off the Champs Elysee, by musicians sipping red wine and smoking unfiltered cigarettes, probably in black and white. But it's not - this is the work of artists whose day jobs include psyche rockers Tame Impala and Melody's Echo Chamber, Tortoise and 'April March' herself Elinor Blake. And with their CVs, you'd expect a modern, interesting, psyche twist on the sound they're [...]

Single Serving: Turtle Giant – Orange Grape

Single Serving: Turtle Giant – Orange Grape As you may already know, we're big fans of Macau-by-way-of-São Paolo trio  Turtle Giant . In fact, their All Hidden Places EP was one of our favorite releases from last year. So it probably comes as no surprise that we're incredibly excited for their followup, and "Orange Grape" is the first sign of what we might be able to expect from that album. It's a warm, slow-burning groove with bright piano, a steady rhythm, and open-sky expansiveness. A chugging rhythm and ringing guitar riff open the jam before giving way to a quickly rising melody and soaring vocals. [...]

Review: Fool around with Buffoon

IF THERE'S such a thing as a fine line between genius and insanity, then on Chromoscope, Buffoon straddles it. Not that Buffoon, the project led by Belgian musician Peter Vleugels, would stand still long enough to straddle anything. Because the LP is a stream of consciousness effort, a melange of musical ideas, all condensed into two long 'sides' rather than a formalised collection of songs. You can almost hear Vleugels running between instruments in the studio, picking up and dropping tunes, genres, emotions without reason, switching from psyche to fuzzy rock to electronica to experimental noise and [...]
