In a bizarre and unexpected twist, Mancunian rockers WU LYF have called it a day. Posting a cryptic message on a Youtube Channel, written in the form of a letter to his band mates, lead singer Ellery Roberts stated, "Evans/Joe/Tom I am gone. This isn't the end. This is the begging. We done business to be as free as we want to be; I'm exercising this freedom. Manchester and the life we maintaining is leaving me empty. It is a beautiful/ incredible/ [...]

Words: Saam Das I never really bought into the mystery bollocks that WU LYF spread like a particularly vicious STD throughout their early career. But in all fairness, they did provide a fairly unique and inspiring brand of music - their self-proclaimed "heavy pop". A new song 'Triumph' (or 'T R I U M P H', if you want to be a prat) has just appeared, with an ominous accompanying text. Is this the end of WU LYF or [...]

WU LYF By Robert Freeman March 22, 2012 Ellery Roberts growls away like a little denim-clad bear, letting his congregation know what’s what. He’s really feeling it – head back, eyes closed, beating his chest with a fist. WU LYF songs chug along in a prolonged, constant climax (it’s all the yelling to be honest) and Roberts is unnervingly animated. Although, as energising as it is listening to four topless lads orgasm in four minute bursts, at times one does slightly yearn [...]

It's not too often that the Our Newest Obsession series highlights a band or artist that already seem to have a grasp of success, in some forms. But Manchester, England band WU LYF (all caps) still have an air of mystery about them. Having already gotten press in NME , Rolling Stone , and other publications, there isn't terribly much to say about the band. How that's possible for a seemingly popular band is pretty miraculous, so take their anonymity right now as some odd blessing. The group's first album [...]

Photo by Jeremy D. Larson World Unite! Lucifer Youth Foundation is an outrageous name for a band. It's muddled, confusing, satanic, and contains an interstitial exclamation point. It's like KISS and GY!BE got busy and had a band-name baby. The ostentatious name is rivaled only by the size of their arena-ready music heard on their debut record, Go Tell Fire To The Mountain . It all comes together pretty nicely on that LP, combining post-rock guitars, an uber-gravelly voice, and festival-stomp percussion building for some just a skeleton of musical perfection [...]

Most of the dust has settled following the mid-year hype and fashionable mystique surrounding young Manchester outfit WU LYF , but it seems never quite completely. I needed some distance from the flurry of media attention surrounding their self-released debut Go Tell Fire to the Mountain , but within a couple of months I couldn't resist sneaking a peek, finding myself drawn instantly to the band's stirring rallying call, manifest primarily in Ellery James Roberts' ravaged, war-battered and often indecipherable (at least to my non-Mancunian ears) vocals. "Spitting Blood" is arguably the finest example of their radical brand [...]

Watch WU LYF's Ellery James Roberts bark and grunt his way through the eternal sex jam, Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" . It's actually quite good! PS: if you have not yet gone to see WU LYF lyv, I suggest you add that to your bucket list. #s/o Subscribe to the PMABLAST, a daily newsletter with free mp3s, music news and reviews sent directly to your email inbox. photos by Toby Tenenbaum Crystal Antlers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg " The [Crystal] Antlers 's new Two-Way Mirror (Recreation Ltd.) offers more proof of a band that could aim for tight songwriting if they pleased, but chose to do otherwise. The whiny organ in "Way Out" and the skronky sax in "Always Afraid" are more about mood and texture than about conventionally handsome sounds. At the same time, Antlers' music is growing more sonorous and confident with experience: "Summer [...]

WU LYF is nothing, four dumb kids calling out heavy longings for a place to call home, two brothers greet two brothers and play heavy pop. I don’t feel at home in this place, like your hearts drunk on kerosene and all you need is a spark. A lil’ flare of Lucifer. Those four dumb kids from Manchester (but don’t call them a Manchester band), England made their North American debut at Philadelphia’s Making Time event last Saturday night (11/5) at Voyeur Nightclub. WU LYF (short for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) has made quite the [...]
